afghanistan for u.s. troops. as the search continues for two u.s. sailors believed captured by the taliban. he was a napa high school grad and at the time of his death in afghanistan, at 21 years of age, army specialist chase stanley served a 15 month tour in iraq. he was killed july 14th when an ied destroyed their vehicle. kyle davenport served with him from day one in the army through service in iraq for four years. >> he's a great man. made sure that he took care of everybody around him. definitely will be missed. great guy. always love him. >> reporter: 15 usgs is have been killed in apps this week with 50 americans dead according to the military times online. >> this is a hard struggle. and general petraeus said very cleanly that it's likely to get worse before it gets better. >> reporter: a massive manhunt continues in afghanistan for two missing u.s. navy men. cbs news reports the taliban claims one is dead and they want to exchange his body for insurgent prisoners. >> [ inaudible ] >> reporter: the two servicemen were believed to be heading back to their base when they apparently ran into taliban fighters. there was a gun fight and a taliban representative said one was killed and the other was captured. u.s. military forces are searching earn afghanistan where they disappeared south of kabul. >> serves to remind of the challenges that we have and also the service and sacrifices that so many make. >> there is more evidence of the difficulties ahead. classified documents say while the u.s. spent $300 billion so far, the taliban is stronger than at any time since 2001 and the war is hamstrung by the loyalty of the afghan police and army. >> that is damaging evidence there. what else does it say. >> a whole list of things that the "new york times" laid off but the taliban has apparently been using the heat seeking missiles to bring down u.s. aircraft. it's worse than we thought. >> don, thank you very much. well, an 8-year-old north carolina girl visiting family in san jose was killed in an apartment fire today. the fire started around 1:30 this morning in an apartment on hamilton avenue in the willow glen neighborhood. >> it's hard to witness. >> reporter: dozens of people that live in this apartment building witnessed a fire that killed an 8-year-old girl. >> i was traumatized. i saw the body coming out and i just started crying, me and my girlfriend. >> reporter: the two moved in four days ago. they woke to screams coming from an apartment across the pool. >> orange fire like something would you see from a tv show out of the window. >> reporter: six minutes after the 911 call, the first fire engine arrived to find that most of the people in the apartment made it out. one girl was trapped. she was in the back bedroom. fire crew found her and brought her out. >> reporter: that girl, adileni gomez-macedo and eight others were taken to the hospital. one woman appeared to have fainted in shock. the little girl was pronounced dead. the news hits hard. this man had just seen her. >> swimming yesterday when the girls were going to an event. they all had little tresses on. >> reporter: it turned out to be the 8-year-old's last day. >> our prayers go out to the family. tragic loss. >> reporter: six apartments are evacuated today and those who can still get in their apartments aren't sure they want to. >> it's hard being here because just knowing that happened and right across the way, i feel really bad for the family. >> reporter: one neighbor criticized the fire department's response time. that could get worse. the engine company responsible for pulling the girl out of the apartment is slated to close at the end of this month. in san jose, an makovec, cbs 5. two other homes in san jose caught fire this morning. one brought out about an hour after the fatal hamilton fire. then before 4:30 this morning a third fire at an apartment on fourth avenue near o'connor hospital. san jose firefighters say all these fires highlight the importance of keeping the city's fire stations open. yesterday they rallied at one of five stations the city may close starting a week from today. tony hayward will be out as bp ceo. that word is out from a senior official. kenneth gibson says this comes as work resumes to permanently seal the well. >> reporter: all the talk down here on the gulf coast has gone from bonnie to bp, specifically the shakeup at the top of the oil giant. a lot of people are wondering one thing, what took them so long. cbs news learned bp's chief executive tony hayward is expected to step down. the announcement could come after the company board of directors meets monday. a spokesperson said tony hayward remains the ceo of bp and has the confidence of the board and ser i don't remember management. as the news of his departure circulated, the government's point man for the spill reiterated his top priority is sealing the well. >> i will focus on unity of effort regardless of who is in charge. >> reporter: all long the gulf coast, talk turned to gas prone hayward. >> glad he is gone. >> came as no surprise that they replaced him. surprise is why didn't they replace him earlier. >> reporter: he came under criticism for comments he made about the spill, most notably wishing to have his life back. the work to shut down the well is back on after 48 hour delay due to tropical storm bonnie. also back from shelter, dozens of voters. they expect to get the call from bp to resume oil spotting and clean up work. >> we are willing and able to do anything. >> reporter: gulf coast residents hope whoever is in charge at bp will do what it takes to get their lives back to normal. and back to that relief well, the operation to permanently seal the leak is expected to begin within the next two to four days. ann? >> i'm curious. what are the odds that bob dudley, the american overseeing bp's cleanup, what are the odds that he would get the top job if hayward is out? >> this is looking very likely. about a year and a half ago, he was candidate to be ceo of bp against tony hayward and hayward won the job. in the meantime, he is expected to take over very soon and a lot of people down here would be happy about that. >> all right. kenneth gibson in mississippi, thank you. well, confusion, chaos and now so many questions. the current death toll from germany's raid up to 19. thousands of festivalgoers were crammed wall to wall at the love parade. some turned desperately to climb out. it's unclear what set off the panic. but witnesses say it started after police closed the end of the tunnel when it got to fuel and they say the tunnel was the only way in and out of the festival grounds. up to 1 1/2 million ravers showed up to the event. they could only handle 300,000 people. the love parade will never be held again. >> today pope benedict xvi said he was saddened to hear about the address. he asked everyone to remember the victims in their prayers. former san jose police chief joseph mcnamara came out in favor of a proposition on the november ballot to legalize and regulate marijuana. he is a research fellow at the hover institution, one of the ballot arguments in favor of proposition 19. he said continuing to enforce marijuana laws takes valuable time and resources from law enforcement efforts to prevent more serious crimes. >> the fiscal problems alone indicate that we shouldn't be wasting scarce resources on crime that doesn't do very much wrong. >> he said the war against marijuana has not been successful, caused violation and corruption and turned millions of californians into criminals. a stanford graduate student running his first marathon ever won the san francisco marathon today. the 24,000 people ran the race that goes across the golden gate bridge and through the city for more than 26 miles. the winner, 25-year-old keith bechtol posted an unofficial time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds. if that holds, it's a new record for the race. emily harsin won the women's marathon. a big weekend for thrillers at the box office. big show down, inception versus salt. which came out on top. the san francisco 3q copd makes it hard [ male announcer ] wells fargo. with you when it's time to save. ♪ symphony provided a relaxing way to spend sunday afternoon. today was the symphony's eighth annual free co the san francisco symphony provided a relax wag to spend the afternoon. it was the 8th annual free concert. orchestra members had a petting zoo where they introduce children to the instruments. it included a selection of music by mexican composer in celebration of mexico's bicentennial. very relaxing. lawrence has thunderstorms to talk about. >> it's been an exciting day. not necessarily in our area but over the sierra nevada. a lot of sunshine in spots well away from the coastline. toward san jose, a great evening on tap as lieu at beautiful sunshine there. started out gray early on. we got more gray stuff coming your way as it looks like low clouds and fog on the coach. we have 1, 2, 3 people out there. that's about it. as we are keeping the cool temperatures out of the immediate beaches. ann mentioned the thunderstorms. they are firing up. they were getting going good for a while. things were moving along. those are lightning strikes coming down right now. we have seen dozens of strikes all along the seer nevada. they continue to fire up in the take who area -- tahoe area. these are caused by moisture wrapping around a ridge of high pressure and that gives rise to the thunderstorms outside. all right. you got thunderstorms up there. we have a lot of fog around the bay area. more of that fog as we head into the next couple of days. low pressure moves along the coastline. temperatures will be coming down. warm in spots. 70s, upper 80s in antioch and brentwood. 60s and 70s in the bay. 50s and low 60s and the fog. 77 in livermore. 76 concord. 77 in fairfield. if you plan on heading around the state, you will find triple digits around the valley. watch out in the high country, you will see some of those thunderstorms erupting into the afternoon hours. another trough of low pressure will make its way into the coastline the next couple of days. that will bring a cooling trend. it's cool around here. this will usher in cooler temperatures running below the average toward the middle week. with that in mind, plenty of low clouds and fog early on then breaking away toward the coastline. it's thicker than today. numbers will be down once again. no 90s around the bay area. 50s and 60s again. a lot of 60s and 70s inside the bay. east bay temperatures may be in the upper 80s well inland. but a lot of 60s and 70s elsewhere. north bay temperatures in the 60s and 70s. except out at the coastline you have the fog and low clouds. that will continue. we will see more of that over the next couple of days. looks like low clouds will continue to burn off slowly and that means cooler temperatures through the middle of the week. it's that time of year you have to be careful heading to the high country. you get the thunderstorms and it takes one strike to ruin your day. >> all right. at the box office, not the big battle for the top spot as some thought. inception was the number one movie for the second week in a row. it's a thriller featuring leonardo decap priya as leader of a team that sneaks into people's dreams. salt debuted second. december spikable me and toys story three rounded out the top 5. in case you were interested in the giants and a's and tour defrance. a lot going on. a's are doing nice things. giants going for a sweep in arizona. his due at the hall of fame. sports is next!
