First Responders who were dealing with it. But the entire community. And so we need everyones help when things like that happen. Remembering what happened. So that we are prepared in the future for what will eventually be another earthquake here in
San Francisco. Its something thats very important to do. This is a great commemoration because it brings back the history and it brings back the resilience that we experienced back then. The resilience that were experiencing right now. Got can be compared to that and having everyone come together at a time before i even show up here. Sometimes can be challenging. But it shows how cohesive we are because of that turnout because of that remembrance. Its a good reminder to all of us to be prepared for that next earth wake. This weekend also marked the start of the
Cherry Blossom festival in
San Franciscos japantown. Thousands came out to celebrate
Japanese Culture and you guys were there, what was the experience like. I experienced that even before i was the sheriff. Being a member of the community. Im a fourth generation japanese american and its always a joy to bring the
Community Together again. To celebrate
Something Like the
Cherry Blossom festival. A great opportunity for us to reach out to the community go back to what we were talking ant. We need more people and always there asking people to come join our family as well. Building relationships right . Id always ask you this at the end of every segment. What did you have for breakfast this morning. One cup of coffee over at the
Lottas Fountain and looking forward to breakfast at some point in the course of the morning. We got to see you fed. I thought you were going to ask him about the food at the
Cherry Blossom festival. Actually that too. Yes. Amazing. Good food and good times and
Great Community spirit. Somebody feed the sheriff before he gets our studios. Sheriff miyamoto, we appreciate you as always. 6 20. It will feel weird at first not seeing
Tara Vanderveer on the sidelines but kate paye is ready to take over at stanford. And heres a live look outside before we head to break on this thursday morning. It is going to be gorgeous here in the bay. It has been. I mean, all week we have been spoiled. So if you are headed out the door this morning, please have a smile on your face. Bay area has beautiful weather. Well be right back. A round of applause, stanford formally announced kate paye as the new head coach of the women eschewal team. Paye is replacing
Tara Vanderveer after the coach announced her retirement last week. Paye worked as her assistant for 17 seasons already so she knows the drill. Our vern glenn spoke with paye yesterday about her excitement. Is your head spinning right now . Its been a wild 24 hours, vern, yeah. I know it will be a lot different and i know i will have a lot to learn. Fortunately really excited that all of the staff is coming back. We all love stanford. We love being here. We love working with the studentathletes and our team. You know, i have had the opportunity to watch like her take over for neka. Now its my turn to step up and i know with our staff and our team, we all have each others back and were excited about doing what we do which is torulae up our sleeves and get to work. Work and get more wins and i mean she had a front row seat for so many years. Some big shoes to fill. But if anyone is capable of more than capable. Its her. Im excited to see her shine and im sure tara is as well. Just record what she just said and have to it on the alarm clock this morning. Roll up the sleeves and get to work. Now a couple of lucky young fans at the giants marlins game in miami. A kid caught a foul ball and then he does the unexpected. He gives the ball to his baby sister. Might have to now. There you go. Oh. Thats excellent. Thats beautiful. Isnt that adorable . The kid worked hard to catch that baseball. You can see him dart over to the stairs to snag it barely beating a couple of other contenders there. Well, ultimately giving the ball to his little sister and mom and dad look very pleased. I mean look at him. So excited to hand the ball over to her and see the joy in her face. And even though we have sibling rivalry here, you know, because thats just normal, and exists. A hug too. A hug. With it. Thats going to be good older brother. I have an older brother whos four years older and i adore him and i have boys that of course 14 and 12 years old. Gentlemen. They are gentlemen. And my 5yearold daughter. And they protect her. So. Yeah. And send them to my house. We got some rivalry going on. Uhoh. Your ages are closer though. Yeah, yeah. You are like you know, its the teen i mean theyre all there. At least you know, your little one. Its hard for a 14yearold to be mean to a 5yearold but you get 13yearolds in a room together and you got my house. [ laughter ] got your house. 6 26. Celebrating 156 years of making miracles. San Franciscos 1906 earthquake. That 7. 9 quake that caused a lot of devastation and more than 3,000 people were killed and now this morning, city leaders and
First Responders held a commemoration event at
Lottas Fountain on
Market Street and residented used the place as a
Meeting Point for the aftermath of the quake and a wreath was laid at spot dedicated to the memory of the late senator
Dianne Feinstein and those who died in the devastation. Following that ceremony, there was a procession to that gold painted fire hydrant on the 20th and church streets. Just near dolores park. Where it was repainted gold and that hydrant was reportedly one of the few that still supplied water at the time to fight the fires after that quake. Now on this day of reflection we know many volunteers work lard to put together this commemoration. And honor those who have contributed to the preserving that history. Shawn chitnis live this morning at dolores park and shawn, were waiting on the ceremony. But for now, we have some photos. Some historic photos that can help us appreciate that time. Reporter hey jess, good morning. Yeah, its been quite this morning with the combination of the ceremonies as well as those photos. So lets show you what is happening here at 20th and church where you can see folks have had the chance to spray paint that fire hydrant. Weve had many people make some really touching dedications to those who are from the time of the 1906 earthquake and fire, as well as others who are here with us today. And when you take these events as well as the memories that we have with those photos, it all just serves as a way to learn from the past and hopefully prepare us for a future natural disaster. Scenes from more than a century ago offer a snapshot into the destruction that consumed
San Francisco in 1906. From a major earthquake and the fire that started soon after. Im born and raised near
San Francisco. And i love our
First Responders and i love our history of
San Francisco. And this was a great way for me to contribute back to the city and keep the history of our
First Responders, all the different departments, alive. Reporter david cruz is with the guardians of the city, an organization that preserves the history of
First Responders in
San Francisco. Remembering our history, remembering the survivors, remembering those who perished, is an incredible way for us to remember who we are as a city, how resilient we are as a city, as we continue to move forward today. Reporter and as events this week mark 118 years since the 1906 earthquake and fire, reminders of the impact on the city can be found everywhere. Including the
San Francisco
Elk Club Lodge number 3. It was destroyed in 1906 and rebuilt at the location it stands in today, a place at the time to help house survivors. This week, it hosts ceremonies to honor those who helped to protect pieces of that history. [ bell dinging ] and even welcomes artifacts that remain a part of the collection. These events help david to remember the 1989 loma prieta earthquake which has a
Lasting Impact on him. I lived here and i was a young child and it was a scary moment for me. And thats what i think about if when the next one hits, what our community is going to look like. The type of support that theyre going to need and how were going to continue to rebuild
San Francisco. Reporter the ruins of the city captured in photos like these serve as a window into the tragedy at the time. But volunteers like david with the guardians hope history provides just as powerful a visual for all of us to be prepared in the future. And back out live here at the dolores park and you can see folks are still continuing to make dedications and spray paint that fountain. It really is touching again to have this combination of ceremonies here as well as the one on
Market Street. Really trying to help people to appreciate what was happening on that day and in the hours and days after in 1906. Guys, back to you. Thank you so much shawn. All right, lets dive into the forecast this morning. Fundamental to head out there and check out that commemoration, or if you have to go to work or school this morning, you are dealing with partly cloudy skies right now. And heres a look at our weather headlines. Were going to see mostly
Clear Conditions into the next couple of hours. We have some patchier fog this morning that just started to bleed off and passing clouds in the forecast today until tomorrow. Highs areremaining above average and as we take a look at the daytime highs today were talking about 60s once again near
San Francisco with 70s anywhere from petaluma off into vallejo and 80s making their debut once again from concord down into antioch and livermore and the
Santa Clara Valley near san jose. Its going to be a warm day for us heading into this afternoon. Just like yesterday, so if yesterday you didnt have the opportunity to go out there and get some fresh air do some
Outdoor Activity today is the day to do it if you have the opportunity to of course. Heres what the rest of the wet weather headlines are looking like for us though. Dealing with above average temperatures today and tomorrow lasting into this weekend with a dry weekend and a light chance of showers heading into our forecast next week. Now thats our longrange models. Ill get to that in just a minute. Another thing to mention too since its been dry for so long, were actually dealing with our pollen count still in the medium to high category. Keeping a close eye on this especially for our loved ones with sensitive allergies like myself and all my friends around me who are just noticing listening to their catchy voices. As we head into the rest of the week continuing to see the dry conditions with the light chance of showers heading into wednesday of next week. More on that in bit. For you now over to you, g. Lets talk about the freeways this morning. And were
Still Holding steady at the bay bridge toll plaza with those brake lights and metering lights on. And starting to back up a little bit more as you head a little closer to the maze this morning. Its time now for the money watch report. The 2024

Jill Schlesinger joins us live from new york to tell us what you need to know. Jill, good morning to you. So this year, the federal government updated the free application for federal student aid form. Better known as the fafsa form. Did it deliver on the promise of saving time and helping more families qualify for those federal loans . Reporter not exactly. And although the department of ed has already addressed the early technical glitches on the form itself, a new problem has come to light. Some colleges say they have received
Incorrect Information from the government. D. O. E. Has acknowledged the problem and theyre correcting the errors they say but problems should be resolved by the end of april. That means some students and their families are going to get late packages from some of the schools that they may impact. Oh what a mess. Okay. So for those with financial offers in hand, what do they need to know . Reporter you know, i think these are so hard to read because theres no single way that any of these schools are required to detail scholarship grant and loan information. So they all use different terms. When you get these packages, make sure you understand what is being offered. And be clear about what terms these loans are carrying. And if you have a question, call the
Financial Aid office. Just say hey, whats a loan and what is free money . By the way, if your
Family Finances have changed since you completed the fafsa, maybe you had a job loss, a medical expense or you are caring for an elderly parent. Please make sure you appeal to get a better package. Jill,
College Tuition is more expensive and often people graduate with significant
Student Loans that need to be paid back. Is a four year degree still worth it . It begs the question here. Reporter the answer is yes. But with a caveat. Data show
College Graduates definitely have lower unemployment rates and they earn more money over their careers and they are able to build a larger net worth over their lifetimes. But of course if you borrowed too much money, all of these advantages they start to narrow. A good rule of thumb. Only borrow the amount of money that you will actually earn in your first job. So if you are going to be a software engineer, you could probably borrow a little bit more money. But if you are going into social services where your income will be lower for at least five, ten years, try to actually reduce the amount of money you borrow so you can afford to do all the things you want to do in your financial life. All right, thank you so much, jill. For more analysis, you can go tojillonmoney. Com. Google is planning to lay off more employees and relocate some of them overseas. According to the business insider, the layoffs will impact finance and real estate workers. American Dairy association is looking to hire a chief ice cream officer to drive through pennsylvania all you have to do is take selfies and yes, we are in that selfie culture. And eat ice cream while you take the selfies. And then just put it all on social media. And for that, you get ice cream and you get 5,000. So you have to be 18 years of age or older a u. S. Citizen with a valid drivers license and insured personal vehicle. And apparently willing to move to pennsylvania. Which i would do for ice creek. Wellborned some fun facts earlier on this show. Gianna is not a fan of ice cream and i like ice cream and i dont eat it but when i do eat it, i eat it with my teeth. I bite into it. Im a biter too. Really . Like even if its not on on a cone . You just in the bowl you just pick no, no, ill use the spoon for that. I mean im not you know. Completely out of control. But you chew it once you spoon it. Do i chew it . Yeah. I do. Ice cream biter. I go in with the front teeth. I can see. Make me want to yeah. My boys think its so strange. My daughter we were just in the car said the same thing. Strange. Remember that i scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. You scream running away for ice cream. I scream like a girl running into it. I said you all enjoy your ben jerrys, im personally not a fan. There was a time where i used to eat a whole container of ice cream in college. Theres a good days. Good old days. Well, now taking a live look outside on this thursday morning. I think
Everyone Needs a little ice cream this morning. Jess. And wow. Look at that. Thats just screaming how beautiful it looks outside. Ice cream cone. Kind of does. Sherbet sunrise. You win. Ding, ding, ding. Thank you. Very good. Hi jess. Oh. Hey guys. I was literally salt and straw like two nights ago by myself grabbing myself like a single scoop. This is like the reality of living just in an area that has the salt and straw. Its dangerous and not good for you but its amazing nonetheless. What kind did you get. So happy right. So worth it. They always have the like new flavors of the season. I like tried a couple of those but all right guys lets take a quick look at whats going on outside. Head to salt and straw, ben jerrys, we have warm weather as we head into this afternoon. Now we have a couple of passing clouds at times but nothing producing rain by any means. Were going to see dry skies lasting into this weekend. With warm conditions around the corner too. And it has been a very warm week for us in our inland areas. Im talking about concord stretching all the way into about york and livermore too. Its worth noting were in the in drought in the state of california. Only 5 of california is dealing with some dry conditions. But still no
Drought Conditions whatsoever. Now lets go back to what i was trying to get at. Concord at 81degrees this afternoon and 83 all the way over into san jose. And up near santa rosa were warning up into the upper 70s this afternoon. So all throughout the bay area, were dealing with a lot of warmth today. A lot of sunshine. Mixed with those clouds at times. And light winds moving i from the north. Its a beautiful forecast for us this afternoon down into the
Santa Clara Valley once again, were seeing upper 70s along the foothills just close to los gatos. Low 80s near san jose. And i want to show you the next seven days and we have a lot of changes in the forecast for us. But really its not until day eight. Day nine and what i mean by that is taking a look at the longrange models. Notice how we jump from the 80s down into the low 60s. Well, actually mid 60s in the inland areas and low 60s near the bay as we head into the next wednesday. Thats going to be a similar trend into next thursday as well. Thursday is going to be cool as can be. And were also going to see another chance of showers return into the forecast ending this dry break but for now, enjoy these partly cloudy skies and all this warmth that we have. Its a beautiful forecast to get out there go and get some fresh air. Low 70s for sunday and monday near
San Francisco and oakland and we cool down quick just by wednesday. About ten degrees. Beautiful along the coast yesterday likely going to be that way today. Nice to hear. All right, you know, heres the nice good news when it comes to traffic. We dont always have to start with the bad. But if you are commuting out of marin county this morning, your ride across the
Golden Gate Bridge looks beautiful. Look at this. If you are headed over into the city, not a lot and going on through here and in fact pretty quiet for the ride into
San Francisco. And i got to say its kind of the case for a lot of the freeways. If you are headed out of the east bay thats where were seeing most of the delays this morning. Westbound 80 heading towards the bay bridge and you have got some brake lights there. If you are heading out of the south bay you can see the
Traffic Building out of morgan hill there. Brake lights near san jose near the 205 over to 680 connector. A lot of green out there and h is great news. We are tracking brake lights and you have the backup at bay bridge toll plaza pretty typical for a thursday morning. Metering lights were turned on a little later than usual though around 5 45. Typically that happens about 5 30. And right now at the nimitz its clear in both directions. Nicole . Well,
Abortion Access is already a hot topic for campaigns and its only heating up after the recent ruling in arizona that upholds a 160yearold law. Banning nearly all abortions. Supporters and opponents rallied outside the

Abortion rights advocates say they gathered enough signatures to put an initiative on the

The response was unbelievable and people were just so excited. And we sold out. Reporter that is when they decided to turn their half baked idea into a full blown cottage business. Translation they want to keep other birds from pooping only the buildings that will be seen on the screens world side. Watch. Its fun to come in and have to dissect what we have going on.
