Some saying nothing is curbing car breakins in San Francisco. Meet one man who worries it may be driving away his business. Im Ryan Yamamoto and im going to take you for a ride. A really low ride through the streets of the bay area. For better or for worse, csub, our campus, seems to be a little kit fox factory. Some little foxes are teaching in our project earth report, some little foxes are teaching some big lessons about Climate Change. The football gods are finally smiling down on us, it is our year. The 49ers are living up to the hype, they are now 30. Why excited niner fans were celebrating more than their team. Well, good morning and im Gianna Franco. Can i do the victory dance. Yes you can. I did wear red today. Yeah, you wore your victory red. Shawn chitnis yesterday wore blue. Which made us a little bit nervous but shawn, you are off the hook. Because the 49ers got the big win. Im Nicole Zaloumis. We made it to friday and someone that didnt is reed cowan. Hes off today. He is his friday was what wednesday night . But dont worry hell be back next week. Be back on monday but lets get live look outside right now because Something Else you are also thinking about not just that niners win but you are probably waking up to that smell of smoke once again today. Yes, its another spare the air day. Just dont drive today if you dont have to. Its because of the wildfire smoke from the california and oregon border so jessica birch is here this morning. To tell us when it should clear because jess, i love this time of year. Its so beautiful with the temperatures. I know, you know, we were just seeing september by earth, wind fire because were getting into the fall season over here in the studio. But you know what . Still umped the first alert weather day. We have the worst air quality here in the bay area that we have seen pretty much this whole season. You can see the hazy skies just over the Santa Clara Valley this morning from live look of that Black Mountain cam. Now i want to show you how temperatures are shaping up for us this morning. For the most part, i mean no matter where we live in the bay area, were pretty much all sitting in the 0s handinhand this morning. Nice and cool weather for us to kick it off. Just wish that we had good air quality but heres the good news, heading into the next couple of days we will see improvements and daytime highs are still going to sit around average. The air quality is improving heading into the weekend forecast. So there is some good news in store for us later this weekend into next week. Were still warming up into the 50s right now. Actually still in the 50s right now and warming up into the 60s closer to vallejo. In the 40s near novato and i want to show you what the current air quality map is looking look right now. See the little little tiny red dots on the map . Thats unhealthy air category. Take it slow this afternoon. Really were getting so close to this system moving its way out. All that smoke thats just been sweeping its way in from the north with those winds directly pointed at us. And inland, its going to start changing as we head into the late sunday night early monday morning forecast. Which is great news for us. To add to that theres plenty of events to do this weekend. There are outdoors and the autumn moon festival happening in chinatown. This is going to be a great one and you know what . The air quality will be in that moderate category heading into this weekend. Weather expecting 60s. Again a good day to use Public Transit and dont spend time outside walking or biking because of the air quality. But if you are driving you are doing all right. Look loot this. Live look at the Golden Gate Bridge, friday light friends. A nice ride into San Francisco. Hardpressed to find any issues. Bay bridge toll plaza a great start as well. San mateo bridge looks good in both directions between 880 and 101. So that 92 ride clear for now. But again this weekend, if you are headed from there all the way along the coast and halfmoon bay, all the pumpkins are out. And theres some fun events happening around there over the weekend. Yeah, if you are looking for something fun to do this weekend, the 36th annual pacifica coast fog fest returns to the pacifica area and hundreds of people from all over the bay will be there to enjoy live music and plenty of vendors and fun activities and you might even see a gianna sighting. The entire family will have fun out there. It is a really good time and not only is it a lot of fun the event also raises a lot of money for several nonprofits and community organizations. So Shawn Chitnis is out there live this morning in pacifica with the prevow of the festival. And really a look at the impact it has on these small family owned businesses. A lot of them are in that area. Shawn . Reporter nicole and gianna, good morning. Yeah, we are back here inside the store and ive been shopping around for you seeing items that i like. Maybe even pull off the sunglasses for me . A lot of great items here and yes its really about the Small Businesses that make up the know because of covid and the challenging economy were facing. Community events like this really have a huge impact on what theyre doing. Paige miller opened up the magic toy box in pacifica back in 2021. Plans for the shop started before the pandemic, but in the last two years, many of the twists and turns that come with owning a new business have been shaped by covid19. Still, hes never strayed away from the mission that keeps him going each day. I miss the nostalgia and the magic feeling of just being able to go to a toy store and a place that was meant for kids. And a place where kids could walk around and see and touch. Reporter a mix of toys new and old, paige loves having a variety of options for boys and girls of all ages. Toys that you had as a kid that you played with, the kids will love them. Just the same. Reporter and parents always enjoy seeing the toys they loved available for their children, or adults. Many of his customers are buying gifts for themselves. One of the things i tell a lot of customers is kids really dont change. Kids stay the same. Reporter early into his run as a Small Business owner, paige is stepping up to help organize this years fog fest as Vice President of the board. Getting involved in fog fest was really important to me because it really is pacificas Biggest Community event. Reporter not only does it generate a lot of sales for him, rivalling what he makes in a weekend in december for the Holiday Shopping season, but also matters more now that he has a family. Paiges wife grew up in pacifica and theyre raising a son together. I want to make sure to fog fest keeps happening and i want to make sure that, you know, its positive for everybody. Reporter keeping up a proud tradition in pacifica while hopefully helping parents and children create new memories together. This is really how kids learn. If you want to be involved with your kids, play with them. Thats the biggest thing. Just play with the kids. Reporter so we talked about this store being a women and Childrens Clothing store. Its also a collective and take a look at the items from pacifica on that shelf right there. But also throughout california. Just another way to support Small Businesses that are where we live. And also we want to remind you that you can take part in fog fest. It is happening from 10 00 to 6 00 on saturday and sunday. Along palmetto avenue and then coming up in the next hour a preview of some of the specialty drinks that they have that you can look forward to if you make it out here this weekend. That will be a lot of fun and nicole and gianna, back to you. All right, shawn thank you and i will be out there so see you soon. Hello wilbert. My name is David Begnaud with cbs news. How you doing . Doing just fine. Nice to meet you. Well, coming up on cbs mornings, its a new series where lead National CorrespondentDavid Begnaud has been given a challenge, go to the airport where his producer then gives him a surprise ticket to some city in the u. S. And then once he lands he has 48 hours to find a special story. The first stop is in savannah. Georgia and david will introduce you to the people he needs along the way. He joins us right now. First of all, i am such a big fan. So many stories you do where i pull out the tissues and i feel like we might see some of those. But you know, how did this all come about . Reporter thank you, love. I appreciate you saying that. Look, the producers came to me and they were like you want a challenge . I was like yeah. I love surprising people. And i love being surprised. So they were like all right. Go to the airport were going to give you a ticket and you have had find out and you then fly there. But heres the catch. You only have 348 hours and look you know from being in the story telling business like i am, that we set up stories from the newsroom or the roads right . We call ahead or are you available . Do you want to do the story with us . And this was about who can you find . So over the course of this story, you are going to see the folks we ran into, the food we had, the random strangers on the street we met, and then the one man who somebody said you know david who you ought to go meet is that guy. Sure enough when we stopped by on the first day he already went home. My crew looked at me what are we going to do if hes not here tomorrow . The clock is ticking and we held ourselves to the clock. Just makes for a great time to find the most ordinary stories. Right . The most everyday stories that i you know, if i was in a newsroom picking a story, i would not have picked that story. That im going to tell this morning. So grateful i told it because of the randomness of introducing myself and running into him and being able to tell it. I love that so much. I love the fact too that you are just stepping into a community. Not really knowing anybody and just trying to find that one person that really makes a difference. Probably in that area or that neighborhood. Whats the reaction when you tell people, hello, im david from cbs, can i chat with you . Reporter well, look, people love it. You had folks running up to me on the street because they recognized my on television. But mr. Boise the man who i meet in front of the barber pole in savannah didnt know who the heck i was. In fact i think he wondered if i wanted a shoe shine. Thats the tease about him. But its great. Because i had never been there. Im southern boy so i get to experience another southern town. If you have not been, go. Its fabulous. But i think as we do this, by the way, ill give you a little sneak peek, were in providence, rhode island today on the second part of this adventure. So the great thing about this is going to be just landing somewhere in america and i think people are going to start coming up to me and saying are you looking for a story . Because i have one for you. I really hope that happens and what an amazing idea. Thank you so much. We cannot wait. 7 00 on cbs mornings right here on cbs news bay area. How fun is that . And i mean you do roll the dice a little billionth because you dont know what to expect. Thats the fun part about it. When i first started heard and they were talking about reed cowan, they said reed can walk outside and find a story. Because reed engages and talks with people and figures out you know what their walk of life is. That will be fun to watch. It will be. And maybewell go visit all the spots that he kind of checks out and meet the people too. All right, 6 11. San francisco leaders stemming up to combat car breakins. Why some are doubting it will even make a difference. And the 49ers handled business at home in primetime. Highlights from purdy, deebamccaffrey and the defense all coming up in the red and gold report. A quick live look outside before we head to break, you are looking live at the city by the way. Some people say its a problem thats been getting more rampant and city hall just held a hearing to address efforts to curb the smash and grabs. Jose martinez tells us even businesses are feeling the impact of the crime. Reporter haight streets recurrent problem unfolds like clockwork. Well see them and cars will come right around the corner and its quick. Its like they have it down to a science. Its fast. Its swift. You dont even know its happening till its already over. Reporter Denny Garbuio has seen it all. People breaking into cars right in front of his shoe store. Hes been the manager of john fluevog shoes on haight street since 1997. For us, its really frustrating because this has been going on for so many years and i dont see any changes happening. Reporter denny expressed his frustration in a letter sent to a public hearing, discussing strategies to combat San Franciscos car breakin problem organized by supervisor dean preston. The city has made no noticeable progress. Doesnt mean theres been no progress. But you dont see the results in terms of a reduction in car breakins. And folks are understandably frustrated. And visitors to our city are not only losing money and property, but often left traumatized and with a very bad experience. Reporter but denny tells me he wants to see more than just conversations. He says that this issue is not just affecting individuals. Its impacting local businesses as well. When people are damned if you do and damned if you dont. You carry a bunch of bags with you, you are a target. You put your stuff in the trunk, you know, you are possibly going to get broken into. So honestly, for a lot of people its like, well, you know what . Its easier to shop online. Maybe i dont have to go down to the store and park and possibly be broken into. I can just buy it online and have it shipped home. Reporter this is a personal battle for him. Originally from canada, but devoted to San Francisco, denny admits hes contemplated leaving the city many times. However at the end of the day, im always hopeful you know. Ill go for a walk in Golden Gate Park and its beautiful and im reminded why i love San Francisco. Then i see a broken car window and i get frustrated again. Reporter for now hes committed to his work selling shoes while cautioning customers about the challenges out there. As he continues to hope the city he cherishes will once again find its way. So tough on Business Owners. Yeah, its tough on Business Owners and we showed that video the other day. Of the visitor that was hanging on to the audi suv when his car was broken into. I mean just seems to rampant. Jessica birch is here with the latest on your friday weather. As we head into the weekend. And its our first weekend of fall. Yay. my gosh i cant believe it. Its finally here. And if only we can celebrate more. But the air quality is still pretty bad this morning. We have called for another first alert weather day here in the bay area as were dealing with some really hazy skies this morning. Throughout the bay. This is a live look behind me and you can see that thin layer of haze just over the Santa Clara Valley this morning. Also seeing it over into the Sacramento Valley too. But right now were waking up in the 50s from redwood city all the way over into los gatos. Morgan hill a very similar trend and later this afternoon, as the winds really start to kick up, thats when were going to start seeing some of the smoke disperse but right now the winds are calm. That smoke is settling over us locally. San francisco sitting at 57 degrees and poor air quality there too. 60s along the coast this afternoon and 80s in the inland areas and i want to show you whats going on right now with our air quality map. See the red dots behind me . This is a live look at the current air quality in the bay and we are in the unhealthy category widespread throughout the bay area from santa rosa all the way down into san jose. And everywhere inbetween. Now heading into the next couple of days we will see improvements and that smoke that is sweeping from the north is slowly going to move out and were going to see better conditions right around the corner but heres the thing. Were in the unhealthy category right now. If you were to stand outside for 24 hours with the current conditions, thats equivalent to smoking about three to seven cigarettes. Limit your time outside today and close the windows and doors and we are so close to seeing this smoke really swirl its way away from us. As we head into this weekend into next week we have a system of low pressure moving its way in from offshore, that will clears up nicely. If you are heading to the autumn moon festival this weekend, you can expect some 60s in store for us over near chinatown and San Francisco. Beautiful conditions for us heading into next week though. Its fall folks. Well, almost. The autumn equinox is later tonight and actually so close to midnight its pretty much tomorrow at that point. Heres what we have for daytime highs for the last day of summer, 70s near petaluma. Into San Francisco 60s are expected for thus afternoon and 70s across the bay bridge and over into oakland. And heading south along 101 into san jose, 70s are expected there with only place we really see some 80s off into the ea
