Taking on a new battle outside the ring to the governors office. Good morning and thank you for starting your day with us. Today is saturday, september 23rd. I am max darrow. Elon musk is already quite busy running tesla, spacex, and the social media platform x, formally known as twitter. But he is setting aside some time for local politics here in San Francisco. He is going after dean preston, then to toss 100,000 into the mix to get him out of office. We talked to supervisor preston for his reaction. The only reason anyone is interested in what elon musk has to say is because he has billions of dollars. I would say to him, use those funds to actually solve some of our problems instead of trying to intervene when you are upset at a local city supervisor. He is a billionaire. He is very right wing. He does not want to be taxed. And he is mad that folks like myself have a lot of support in this city. Preston held a meeting this week about car breakins. It was getting a lot of backlash and is the one that got musks attention. He said that the city needs to pound in the message to visitors. Do not leave anything in your cars. Critics accused him of giving into thieves and victim blaming. On friday, the car was broken into near golden gate park. I thought in the back not that much, obviously. We did not know how serious the problem was. We just knew there were breakins. We did not actually think it was this serious. This was our first day in San Francisco. As for musks promise to the campaign that wants to oust preston, we reached out friday and we are told that musk has not sent any donation in so far. A twoyearold was shot and killed in vallejo yesterday. And this morning there were still a lot of questions surrounding the tragedy. Police were looking for evidence along alhambra avenue ever since they had evidence that a child was rushed there after being shot. The twoyearold boy died at the hospital. A neighbor came home after it to find lots of police, including an armored car. There is so much that vallejo could do. This is such a great city. It is just, you know, underfunded. It is underrepresented. It is seen as a hallmark of crime. And it is very sad. The city has a lot to offer. Police were trying to figure out whether this was an accident or a crime. We will bring you any updates as we get them. Business owners in oakland say crime is driving customers away, and they are upset that the city recently missed a deadline to potentially get millions of dollars in grant money to fight retail crime. So now as many as 200 businesses are planning to go on strike next tuesday in hopes of sending a message to the city. One oakland Restaurant Owner told our Andrea Nakano that they may be forced to close for good and we see the reason why right outside. Reporter closing up shop for a strike is not something struggling businesses want to do, but they say if they do not unite now and demand real change they may have to close their doors for good. Last december, nigel jones opened up calabash in uptown oakland. What we have here is our curry goat dish. Reporter he is using recipes he learned from his grandmother and full of traditional flavors from jamaica, but business has declined over the last nine months. When we first opened, we were doing, say, 4000 5000 a day, but now if i can get 2000 per day i am happy. Reporter well we were filming inside, this car became a target of a smash and grab. We are in a situation where the crime is driving our Customer Base away. Reporter it is not just here at calabash, but crime is having an impact on many businesses. The owner of le cheval announced he is closing his doors due to crime. If we do not do anything now, immediately, then all of us will be facing the same issue. Closures. This is not what we wish to see. What we are trying to do is make everyone understand this is a structural problem. Le cheval is not closing because their food is not good, their cocktails are not tasty and their servers are not excellent. That is not the case. Their customers are being terrorized. Reporter they are demanding two things. One is for funding. And the others to get Law Enforcement agencies involved to get order back to the streets of oakland. We are fighting not just for open businesses, but for our residents to have a comfortable , social, and vibrant life. Reporter jones is hopeful that change will come soon as that Community Rallies to take a stand against crime. He rallies not only to his own dream of owning a business but to also be a role model for others. Have you ever just kind of thought, oh, my gosh, it could be me. Yeah. Every day. I am thinking about it, even now. Public School Teachers and staff in San Francisco say they are ready to walk off the job of negotiations with the district do not move forward. Teachers say, low pay, low class sizes, and nightmarish payroll issues have dragged on since last year. They are getting ready to authorize a strike. If that happens, teachers can walk off the job in october. Janitors and lunch workers could also strike. There are about 50,000 students across 132 schools throughout the city. Now, for a fight for pensions that do not involve teachers, or Public Workers at all. Mixed martial arts fighters say they need help. They are often left broken after their careers have finished. Their annual salary is only about 64,000. But a new state bill could set up a first of its kind plan to help. Reporter ivan is a san jose business owner, husband, and father of three. But when he puts on the gloves, he becomes a warrior and an expert at unleashing violence against his opponents with fists and feet. Ivan is a professional mixed martial arts fighter with a championship belt in the middleweight division. And what they fivewin, twoloss record, there has been a lot of bruises and blood letting in this sport. But at 37 years of age and with nagging injuries, ivan may have thought his finalround. The uncertainty of my future has been a yeah. The uncertainty of my future has been something that i have really been meditating on and putting lots of thought into what the next step might be. Reporter unlike other professions, there is no pension plan. But that could change thanks to a bill by San Francisco assemblymember matt haney. One of the challenges that they have aids, this could be a pretty short career. And sometimes they have injuries that are longlasting and they feel that after they are done fighting, no one is looking out for them and no one is taking care of them. I think this pension fund we have set up will help to do that. Reporter mna is a state regulated sport and california has the largest number of fights and fighters. A percentage of concessions and Souvenir Sales will go into the fund for fighters who have at least 14 bouts in california. This had unanimous bipartisan support. Democrats and republicans. No cost to the state. There is commitment to improving it over time. There are millions of fans. Reporter millions of fans and some fighters but many make only a few hundred dollars per fight. I think the bill is mandatory. Fighters really need it. I think families need it. And a lot of my peers do not have a fallback plan or any other skill set in which they can rely on. Reporter ivan has made enough to open his own gym and while having a pension would help, he is counting on his fitness and martial arts training businesses to help him and his family into the future. The bill is sitting on governor newsoms desk. He has until october 14th to decide whether to sign it or not. Coming up, a Tropical Storm makes landfall on the east coast. It will help us sustain and maintain a Healthy Lifestyle as we get older things to Everything Else that it measures. So after i had my son, i realized the number was only one small part of measuring good health. Now, you download the app and this will measure your body weight, of course, but also your skeletal muscle rate, things like your metabolic rate, your muscle mass, body fat, bone mass, you name it. Things that i really love though, the body water and body age. Very interesting. Easy to use. You step on it with bare feet and it sends a signal through your body and the signal can move more easily through muscle than fat and that is how it gets all the info.
