Start with it. Keep your outdoor plans on monday. We are going to get some rain. Not equally to what it was. By sunday morning there is a beautifully organized storm parked right off of the coast. In is fueled by a moderate strength Atmospheric River. We are not getting that side of it. You know who is . The northern side of california. And the smoke when it finally rains on it. When you take a look at the rainfall accumulations monday through tuesday morning, here is how it will play out. We do get rain in the north bay. We are going to talk more about that in more detail coming up in the first alert forecast. Timing it out, i will show you how much rain we may get across the bay. Not much, but there will be some. In the meantime, we have an air quality issue. Until the storm getting here and reorganized the atmosphere we have another day here. The bay area, air quality management, extended the spare the air day for tomorrow. Entering the day. Going downhill a little bit and seeing it go downhill. Here through the golden gate. Remember what happens, it turns on this time of the night. Winds pick up. Pulling in me smoke that is sitting out there, through San Francisco, marin and the east bay shore. You can visualize it here on the smoke forecast. Watch the colors deepen as we get through the next few hours that is 9 00. You can see, more smoke, it is going to linger through tomorrow and it was not pretty today. It will be a little better tomorrow, it will be much better on sunday. This is over on monday. More on that rain coming up in a bit. For now, back over to you. Looking forward to it. A lot of people are. Now, a fight over pensions, it is not nurses or Public Workers asking for it. It is actually mixed marble art fighters. Mma is one of californias Fastest Growing sports. Fighters are often left broke and broken after their careers are finished. A new state bill could set up the first of its kind plan to help them once they step out of the ring. Ivan is a san jose business owner, husband, father of three. When he puts on the gloves he becomes a warrior and an expert at unleashing violence at his opponents withs in and feet. Ivan professional mixed martial arts fighter. Nice leg kick. Reporter with a fivewin, two lots record he had his share giving and receiving the blows, the bruises, and the blood of the sport. He is bleeding all over. Reporter at 37 and nagging injuries he might of fought his final round. The uncertainty of my future has been a yeah, the uncertainty of my future has been something that i have been really meditating on. Putting lots of thought into what the next step might be. Unlike most other professions there is no pension plan for ivan and all of the other fighters in california for their years spent in the ring. That could change thanks to a bill by San Francisco assembly member. One of the challenges that they have is it can be a short career. And, sometimes they have injuries that are longlasting and they feel that after they are done fighting no one is looking out for them and no one is taking care of them. And, i think with this pension fund we set up it will help do that mma is a stateregulated sport. California has the largest number of fights and fighters. Under his plan a 1 of every ticket sold and a percentage of concessions and Souvenir Sales will go in the fund for fighters with at least 14 bouts in california. No cost to the state. Support. Mirrors a program for boxers, committed to improving it over time. There are millions of fans. Reporter millions of fans and some millionaire fighters but many lower level pros make only a few hundred ever fight i think the bill mandatory, the fighters need it. I think that the families need it. A lot of my peers do not have any fall back plan or any other skill set in which they can rely on. Reporter ivan made enough to invest in his own gym, having a pension would help he is counting on his new fitness and martial arts training businesses to help support him and his family into the future. Now, a similar pension plan exists for boxers. Other sports leagues offer retirement in players contracts. The bill is sitting on the governors desk. He has until october 14th to sign it. By the way, the average yearly salary for fighters is about 64,000. All right, another battle unfolding in San Francisco. Public schoolteachers and staff say they are ready to go on strike if negotiations with the district do not move forward. We have seen all week teachers are vocal about their frustration which is, they say, include low pay, large classroom sizes and payroll issues. This is one of their pickets from this week where they actually blocked traffic. We saw that earlier. And the union is getting ready to authorize a strike. If it is is approved they could walk off of the job. They have 50,000 students across 132 schools in the city there. Flower power taking on a new meaning in parts of the bay area. Some San Francisco neighbors are using flower planters as a way to detour homeless encampments near their homes. Take a look. The metal planters set up along the sidewalks north of the panhandle. Residents spent their own money on the project and they say they took action after seeing new types of people move in. But, homeless advocates say inhumane and shortsided solution here. We have seen a lot of homeless but the influx is homeless who really have severe mental issues. It is just another tactic used to harm unhoused folks. Reporter the same thing is happying in other neighborhoods, last saturday wooden planters went up outside of the walgreens at 18th and castro. That is san area where the homeless gather. We want et to breaking news. A tragic story tonight. Hard to report. 2yearold has died from a gunshot wound. We dont know a lot of details but the police are looking for evidenceat a home near 780. Officers got a call after 11 00 this morning from the hospital saying a 2yearold was in critical condition. Sadly, the child died from injuries. The polistl trying to determine if it was an accident or a crime. Very sad news to report. All right. More than six months after our wild winter, construction finally underway on the wharf. It could turn out better than the original. Coming up in tonights red and gold report, a special victory friday after the 49ers rolled to their Third Straight win. We have special guests in house. This is the volkswagen red and gold report. Our favorite report tonight. Scoring exactly 30 points in each of their games this season. It is getting exciting. It is a special friday night, red and gold report. We dont just have vern here, we have lorenzo. We just thought you needed protection here. Yes. I feel very safe right now. [ laughter ] that is coming up at 7 30. A live red and gold report. We have to talk about number 19, huh . Absolutely. A wrecking machine. Yes. Debow, he was. 12 catches, 129 yards, the electrifying touchdown, the back shoulder catch. He was everywhere. When they were in trouble. You just go to number 19, right . Yes. Let me just drag a couple guys broke four tackles in the 40 yard catch and run. [ laughter ] i know. Look at that. Yes. You see me, now you dont. We will go right through you. So, we will talk indepth about samuel. We are going to talk about the 49er running back and that will be christian, a nice catch there, mccaffrey came in leading the league in rushing, jules, every time they are off center you give it to him that is right. Jules over here licking her chops, we love him. 23, what can he do . Great pick up by them last year this is exciting. 453 catches, 5,000 yards rushing for his career. We are talking mvp quality. Talking about the new contract extensions for head coach Kyle Shanahan and the general manager in number 7 all coming up. Right, red and gold report i also like what you were saying i texted you earlier this is getting exciting. Super bowl here we come. I dont want to get too far ahead of myself, skies the limit. You were saying the real match is going to be the cowboys . Week five, cowboys now, calm down, calm down one game at a time i know. I know. You know that, vern. I get excited. Thank you. Stay tuned. Full halfhour coming up after the news 7 30 live in studio. Now to darren for our rain on the horizon it is one game at a time but the super bowl is on cbs this year, i am just saying. [ laughter ] lets talk about how things did start to change from a smoke perspective. This is from this afternoon. Can you see the smoke up there . That is coming off of the smith river complex fire. Here is what is different about today. That smoke is going the other way. It is getting pushed off into oregon. That is different. Yesterday, getting pulled out here. Dragged down in the winds. So, that is an important change that is going to help us out. If you look at the winds they are taking the smoke and pulling it down our way. The winds looking like today, just forwarded it, the winds relaxed out here the only problem is, look at what is going on near the bay. We still have an onshore flow. Whatever left over smoke that is drifting around out here that is Still Available to get pulled into the bay. The way to think about this is, we are just dealing with the left over stuff now. We are not constantly resupplying more smoke. It is about to come to an end. When we look at it on the big picture, watch what happens after side. The flow kicks in. And all of that mostly cloudy gets moved away. That is tied into this approaching storm. Lets take a look at that. Big picture, by sunday, a well organized storm sitting off of the coast that is sour rainmaker on monday. It is fueled by a moderate strength Atmospheric River but we are not getting that side of that. That is going to Pacific Northwest where it will be an impressive rainmaker for september. Here in the bay. We are talking about it. That is the rain, late monday night into tuesday. I dont think we get much south of the golden gate. We do get some rain for the north bay. It will probably only be 1 10th to 2 10th of an inch of rain. Look up here. Remember looking at the fire, putting out the smoke. Not only does the wind blow the smoke the other way as of today but monday, poured on. In the fire does not go out completely t is possible it might. But even if it doesnt the smoke will be history. Not looking at huge amounts of smoke coming off of the fire anymore t. Is coming through an end. You got to get through tomorrow. At least through tomorrow, another spare the air day. There is the rainfall totals for us here at home. Santa rosa, 1 10th of an inch of rain. Monday night maybe tuesday morning, starting out with the marine layer. Start out on saturday, marine layer gray day and we have the smoke. It is not going to be a pretty start to the day tomorrow. The clouds melt back to the beaches by the afternoon. Then it is just the usual haze. Not a pretty day. Not going to be the layer cake smoke all day. Middle 70s inland. We are 10 degrees below average right now. Not talking about that. But, there, i just talked about it. 10 degrees below average right now. Here is the rain on monday. San francisco, oakland, both have their chance, remember, not much south of the golden gate. The rest of the week it is quiet. North bay valley, the top line, that is where we get that maybe 15th of an inch. San jose does not get rain in the sevenday. It is just not really a storm built there. This is an early fall storm. They usually come together this way. You notice in the north bay, kind of. And it does not get far enough south to bring rain to the south bay yet that is probably coming. Several weeks coming downtheline. Inland, east bay, the coast. First day of fall. Tonight yes. Right before midnight we kick it into gear. Okay. Thank you. All right, construction got underway today on a coastal landmark, damaged during our storms. They say repairs are a long time coming. As Elizabeth Cook tells us they hope it will come back bigger and better than ever. Reporter staging machinery, equipment, materials, construction crews have mobilized on the wharf. For me i am looking at it every day. I can see it, breaks my heart just sitting there. I wish i can go to sleep and wake up when it is open. The damage, a daily reminder of this years storms, leaving an iconic landmark unrecognizable. I got a call saying the wharf was destroyed. I watched on Live Television the whole thing. I was only going to watch half of it, i could not handle it without crying. Reporter the plan is not just to repair the storm damage but make it more resilient during future weather events. The closure is still effecting the community heavily relying on tourism business. Big holidays just passed it was not as busy as they should have been. I think a lot of people from outside the area think that the beach is still closed but it is not. The repairs are fully funded with measure f money and grants from the state and federal government. And just seeing the community that, you know, has, was, still is being effected by it. You know, tourism being down and then step up to the plate and Community Member and leaders. Enhancements like a new seating way and lighting are funded by community donations. Everybody has a story. You know, we call it the heartbeat. It is amazing. Outpouring of support we get from the local community it is just amaze if all goes as planned and the weather cooperates, the city hopes to reopen the wharf by next summer. Coming up next, new technology being tested aimed at defusing some. New technology to ease tensions at traffic stops, if that is possible. Drivers can video chat with a deputy before they approach the window. So, the app is called safe stop. If you are pulled over you can use it to talk to the cop without the tense proximity that often results in violence. Safe stop will even pay a percentage of your ticket if you are using the app at the time. Okay. I have a lot of questions about that one. So, to sara, tonight, the worlds richest man getting involved in american politics. Elon musk, lets bring in sara donchey to explain. You talked to preston earlier this evening. I wanted to get reaction, what do you think of all of this . Elom musk is pledging money to unseat preston he tweeted this out saying he needs to be fired calling him the person most responsible for the destruction of the city. He is a billionaire. He is right wing. He is mad that folks myself have a lot of support in the city. We will have the answers to that and much more of the story tonight at 11 00. It is interesting when you think of elon musk, a man with so much to do honing in on local politics Something Else he is putting in the ring. Fascinating, mind boggling, too, he has the Creative Energy and the pockets, deep pockets, we will see what happens. Thank you. How bay ar the doctor will see you now. But do they really . She was honored at the middle school that is named after her. Students and staff welcomed her with flowers and signs that you see there. She served at the rosie the riveter museum. She retired two years ago as the Oldest National park ranger. She said her birthday plans include lots of pizza, a lot of cake and she was so appreciative today she said she never wanted anything but when she retired and they named the school after her it was the best gift of all. We wish her a happy birthday. Enjoy that pizza and cake. On that note, thanks for watching, the red and gold report is next. Have a wonderful weekend.
