infamous issues. >> we are seeing one of the lowest crime rates in ten years. that is continuing to trend to this day including a 50% reduction year to date in car break-ins, 30% reduction in property crime. >> reporter: former mayor and city supervisor mark farrell promised to fire police chief bill scott and to crack down on drugs. >> as mayor, i will declare a fentanyl state of emergency to allow us to ask the state and federal government for additional funds to allow them to bring in additional law enforcement and allow us to build a 24/7 centralized intake center. >> reporter: political newcomer dana laurie touted his plan to have shelter beds and outlaw tent encampments in his first in office. >> we will put it out 1,500 new shelter beds the first six months of my administration, safe, dignified. >> reporter: candidates took jacks at his lack of insider knowledge. >> daniel, this is where your inexperience shows. >> see, that's where the inexperience of someone who hasn't worked in government shows through. >> reporter: aim was taken at existing flaws with city hall, vows to overhaul processes if elected. >> unfortunately, police were directed to target drug users instead of dealers. we've made more arrests for using drugs than dealing them. >> right now we have almost 1,000 permanent housing beds empty. we have hundreds of affordable housing units sitting empty, hundreds of shelter beds empty. this is not a matter of resources. it's a matter of leadership from the top. >> reporter: moderators asked each candidate what single issue they would fix if they had a magic wand. >> absolutely deal with the overdose crisis and number of people dying on our streets. >> i would bring the 49ers back to the city of san francisco. >> the crisis of drugs on our streets on, but i think we can prevent that by having a world class public school system. >> i would wave my magic wand and over 100,000 units would appear overnight. >> i would vastly reform the civil service hiring system which only the mayor can do to hire all those vacant nurses positions, 911 centers. >> this is video from a campaign event earlier today in minnesota. this is the first lady's second trip to northern california in two months. she heads to reno tomorrow. president biden is in italy as the g-7 summit gets underway. today he met with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. both leaders agreed on a u.s. security pact where u.s. troops continue training ukrainian forces and give military equipment and intelligence to ukraine. >> lasting peace for ukraine must be underwritten by ukraine's own ability to defend efforts now and deter future aggression anytime in the future. the u.s. states will help insure ukraine can do, not by sending american troops, but by providing weapons and ammunition. >> president biden also announced new financial sanctions against russia, clearing the way for a $50 billion aid package to ukraine. meanwhile former president trump returned to capitol hill the first time since the january 6th insurrection seeking to unite gop lawmakers behind his candidacy and agenda. he addressed house and senate republicans behind closed doors. lawmakers in the meetings say he spoke about his plans to reach independent voters in the fall. they say he shrugged off his recent conviction on 34 felony charges for falsifying business records. trump and president biden are set to injure off in their first debate june 27th. a group of eight former spacex employees are taking ceo elon musk to court. a new lawsuit claims they were illegally fired for raising concerns about gender discrimination and sexual harassment. the suit accuses musk of treating women as sexual objects and making other inappropriate sexual remarks, no comment yet from spacex about the lawsuit. musk is also facing a class action lawsuit over claims of pervasive racial harassment and of abuse at the tesla factory in fremont. it wasn't all bad news for mask today. tesla shareholders voted to approve a pay package worth more than $46 billion. they also voted to change the company's incorporation state from delaware to texas. shareholders approved the original pay package in 2018, but a 2018 -- just be a person that's helpful versus a person tearing down the community. >> plus how a bay area community had is stepping up to support a student a unique job training program in northern california prisons could be a model for the rest of our state. ashley sharp reports from solano state prison. >> reporter: from locked up to looking up, this is a first of its kind program in california connecting those incarcerated to jobs while they're still behind bars. it was all started here at solano state prison. thousands of inmates across california have jobs inside state prison walls. from valuable skills like working with steel -- >> i love welding. i love teaching other people a. >> reporter: -- to the lens lab where glasses for med i-cal patients are repaired by hand, some finding purpose decades into a sentence. >> it gives me an opportunity to be proud of what i do, be a person that's helpful versus tearing down the community. >> if they can't get a job and at the end of the day, what good is any of it. >> reporter: the california prison industry authority with a big announcement wednesday. >> it starts now. >> reporter: kicking off a new program in state prisons that for the first time helps inmates apply for and secure jobs in the real world months before their release, meaning some will walk out of prison right into the workplace. >> i got out of prison april 17th. few days after returning home he started his job with a large nationwide manufacturing company. >> reporter: fausto hopes to be the next. >> i viewed 17 jobs and applied for eight of them. >> reporter: with 70 days left on his sentence he has a resume, interview skills and possibly a job. >> my father asked me are you scared and i said no, dad. i am anything but scared. >> reporter: confident he's not the same man who came here in 2006. >> prison is the best thing that ever happened to me because it got my attention to get myself on the right track and to add to society instead of taking away. >> reporter: cal pia says 85% of inmates in their job programs do not return to prison, a seamless transition back into set to finding freedom in forging a new future. >> since the entry to employment network was launched at solano state prison, it's expanded to four others, including san quentin. they hope to have it offered statewide by next year. up next, an unusual encounter between a homeowner and a bear who decided to make itself extremely comfortable in his backyard hammock. straight ahead in sports, from vacaville why am i holding investigation into multiple deaths associated with some of these products, that hey, bears, guys, get off the hammock. >> a bear was making himself quite comfortable on a hammock in vermont. it wasn't the only backyard visitor. the homeowner says he lives in an active bear basin where black bears are used to human contact. while he says they were adorable, had he to shoo them away so they wouldn't get too close to his house. my favorite part about this is, well, two things. one is that his buddy is patiently waiting for him to get off the hammock. he's like dude, you done yet? >> my turn. >> and the bear on the hammock just swinging around chilling. >> lounging. i like the owner of the house, bears, get off the hammock like it's a dog. >> sounded like me talking to my kids. bad bears. >> they're all good bears, mostly. let's look what's happening weather-wise, significantly cooler across the bay area today and the persistent onshore breeze will be with us the next several days. all the big weather pictures in the atmosphere are avoiding us. in between all those features the atmosphere gets squeezed and we have the onshore breeze that did result in significantly cooler temperatures across the bay area today. topped out in the 70s for most of the north bay, 63 degrees in vallejo, 61 degrees in oakland, 58 degrees in san francisco. it made it to the upper 70s in concord, low 80s antioch, only 70 fremont, 78 redwood city and half moon bay, 55 degrees for a high temperature in the middle of june. that is cool. 77 degrees in san jose, 82 degrees in los gatos, morgan hill 71 degrees, wide variety of temperatures across the bay area. there is the fog as we look outside from the mark hopkins hotel looking east. temperatures still 60s and 70s, 55 degrees from the meeker high of 58 in san francisco. the warm spot is only 75 degrees in concord. inland this is a welcome stretch of free air conditioning after the heat a couple days ago. it's going to cool off nicely tonight. that fog will try to push across the bay. it will be more low cloud cover as opposed to fog at ground level and the wind will help disperse some of that fog late morning. temperatures tonight are slightly below average, mostly low to mid-50s, north bay valleys dipping into the upper 40s. we'll recover because the sunshine will break through and temperatures will be 2 to 4 degrees above average. that's about where we stay through the duration of the seven-day forecast, 60s and 70s along the bay, near 80 down the peninsula, 80s for the santa clara valley and most inland parts of the east bay, just the very hottest spots around 90 degrees. upper 60s in san francisco, mid-70s oakland, mostly 80s for the north bay, a couple spots in the 70s. farther north 91 clearlake, one of the hottest spots on. the winds pick back up tomorrow afternoon. where you warm up the onshore breeze will send in cooler air by late afternoon as winds gusts the 25 to 30 miles an hour. this weekend there's a lot of stuff going on including the juneteenth block party in san francisco. temperatures reach the upper 60s once again. the seven-day forecast shows that pattern, inland mainly 80s until the last day of the seven-day forecast, which happens to be the summer solstice, inland temperatures around 90 degrees which is hot but not that far out of the ordinary. around the bay low to mid-70s, a few additional clouds sunday and monday. along the coast, you're used to the clouds this time of year, but tomorrow you'll see a bit more sunshine. it won't help your temperatures, mostly low 60s good evening, everybody, from vacaville at nugget market the browns valley location and a wine tasting because the item of the night, baker family wines. world series champion dusty baker stopped by to visit with fans. it started as a hobby, his wine making, when he was still managing, but in retirement the wine business has become an even bigger passion. how in the world do you go from lifetime baseball man to vintner? >> we've been making wine for about 18, 19 years. >> reporter: okay. >> at first we were giving it away to my buddies and i had a small vineyard in my backyard in sacramento. i like it a lot. it soothes my brain. my winemaker, he's glad when i'm home so i can do most of the work. the sharks have a new head coach promoted to replace david definitely. he spent the last two seasons as an assistant with san jose. the 36-year-old becomes the youngest head coach in the nhl. pine hurst country club in north carolina, the site of this year's u.s. open, one of the few courses tiger woods has ever won a tournament, woods rolled in the birdie putt on his opening home. here's a familiar sight, woods' name at the top of the leaderboard, but not long. tiger shot a 4 over 74. rory mcilroy put himself in the mix with an opening round of 65 tied for a share of the lead. patrick cantlay got the best of pinehurst from the cat box at 11, oh, patrick, shot a 65. he's tied with mcilroy. meantime major league clubs are definitely keeping tabs on the oakland ballers. >> i was excited to come out and experience oakland. so it's kind of sad leaving oakland but for good reason. i went to get groceries this morning and saw san francisco off in the distance, so it's crazy. it came all full circle like that. >> reporter: that will do it from here in vacaville. you got about an someone stole all of her grad gifts, including her cap and gown. the community is now rallying to her side, as andrea nakano reports. >> reporter: s ariah farr graduated from envision academy last thursday. it was a long four years to finally get her diploma. >> i had a lot of trouble where sometimes i did want to give up, but it was driving me to want to get out and make money for myself, have a successful life. >> reporter: sariah graduated with a 3.8 gpa. family and friends gave her gift cards and a money lei as a present, but it was taken when her godmother's car was bipped during the celebration dinner. even her cap was stolen. >> i was surprised. i totally forgot about it. i was so caught up with being with my family. when i saw that, i was like wow. >> reporter: since then sariah received an outpouring of support from the community, especially from her mentor donald lacey. lacey started the love life foundation to help oakland youth get away from a life of crime and violence after his 16-year-old daughter was shot and killed 27 years ago. >> while i lost one, i've gained thousands. i am rejuvenated. i am inspired by the brilliance of young people like sariah. >> reporter: to make up for her loss, lacey's love life foundation has raised roughly $700. he says it's a testament how oakland comes together in times of need and fights back against the criminals that take from others. >> i'm a firm believer in karma. what goes around comes around. it's not going to end up -- and i'm not wishing anything bad on anybody, but when you victimize anyone, let alone an innocent young black woman who has only done great in the community, never done trouble, that says something for the lack of your upbringing. >> reporter: sariah plans to go to laney college in the fall. >> i have no intentions thinking about the negatives. i'm thinking about everybody who was there for me and all the people that supported me after. >> reporter: she hopes she can inspire others
