Todays topic ear infections. Dr. Jill chase joins us with kialana. What are some of the first signs of ear infection . Redness and sometimes discharge and then owners will describe the smell but not do they always find it. Sometimes we find it in physical recommendation. So i treme owners when they are petting the dog i recommend to my owners when they are petting the dog, just lift up and make sure it looks normal. The normal color is shell pink in color and i wanted to show this model. I dont know if you can see it. There we go. So the ear canal actually in a dog her size would go down vertically about an inch and then in horizontally about an inch. In a cat it might be a quarter inch and quarter in. So sometimes owners think they can see into the ear to see whats going on but in fact thats not true, so any there is discharges or discoloration the vet needs to examine the ear, make sure theres no foreign material in the eardrum and it could be bacterial infection, yeast infection. What are some of the treatments . So usually in my experience most of my patients will respond very nicely to a medication that treats all three of the things i just mentioned. But sometimes they dont in which case we have do a culture and find out what the organism is. Thank you, dr. Jill.
