Remember for seven years, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol as part of a dispute with his record label. Now he is being remembered for a sound and style that helped shape music for more than three decades. Police and Security Officials gathered outside Paisley Park Studios in chanhassen, minnesota, where prince recorded so many others hits. It was just before 10 a. M. When they responded to a medical emergency. Hours later, princes publicist confirmed that he was dead. [ music ] reporter he was Born Prince Rogers Nelson in minneapolis in 1958. He grew to become one of the most recognized and decorated recording artists of all time. Prince showed a natural talent for music composing his first song at age 7. Through his teenaged years, he learned to play most of the instruments on his first few albums. [ music ] reporter his sound and style was an unmistakable blend of funk, rock, r b, soul, pop and dance music. Part of what prince did was he played just like david bowie did with images. Reporter prince became an International Movie star in 1984 with the release of purple rain, which won two grammys and an oscar for best original song score. [ music ] reporter he was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2004. One of the interesting things about him is that did he keep his private life so shrouded. Were talking about an artist who as he became a bigger star refused to grant interviews. Reporter last week he was hospitalized with the flu after his plane made an Emergency Landing en route to a concert in atlanta. Prince was 57 years old. The cause of his death is not yet known. After canceling a show because of the flu last week, he actually hosted a dance party at his home for 200 fans just four days ago telling them if they heard bad news about his health, to quote, give it a few days before he waste prayers on me. He was courtside as the warriors beat Oklahoma City at oracle arena on march 3. A big loss for prince fans everywhere. It is such a big loss and it is so reminiscent of the loss of david bowie. It is such a shock almost universally, every tweet every response that everybody is saying is, if this is true, i cant believe this is its like people literally dont believe yet that it happened because he was still so vital and so electric and he never he never faded. He burst on the scene in the 80s with this provocative style, with this aggressive sexuality and and personality larger than life and that never went away. He never seemed like oh, then theres the old prince. He just was always the same. He was always true to himself. We mentioned his performance just last month. I was lucky enough to watch that performance. It was just prince and the piano on the stage. He moved the way that we have always seen him move. He sounded the way he always sounded. I mean, its a shock it is a shock. And it is a friend of mine who was at that show said that going and watching prince at a piano to him was being in church. He said thats how people feel. It was a religious experience watch that man do thinks craft in that theater. We are so lucky we had so many prince ties in the bay area and thats why we feel the loss so deeply. Its stunning. They are taking a dramatic step in efforts to spur change in San Francisco. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec tells us they are holding a Hunger Strike. Anne. Reporter right here in front of the Mission Police station in San Francisco, you can see the small group behind me. Five people are refusing to eat. This is a protest that could go on for weeks. I come to you as a son of San Francisco that is fighting for justice. Reporter a rapper is leading a small group on a Hunger Strike outside the Mission Police station. Ill stay out here for however long it takes, months. Reporter they say one of two things will end their protest, the resignation of San Francisco police chief greg suhr or mayor ed lee. Otherwise they plan to stay until they collapse from malnutrition all to call attention to what they say is racism in the San Francisco Police Department. We are seeking justice for people in San Francisco. Reporter some of the killings they point to, 26year old mario woods, who was shot dozens of times by Bayview Police in december. Woods was carrying a knife and refused to drop it. 28yearold alex nieto killed by police two years ago armed with a taser police thought was a gun. And most recently police shot and killed luis gongora in the Mission District april 7. Today mayor lee addressed the protests. Whether they call it a demonstration or a march or Hunger Strike, we are going to respect that. And we have heard i take the Police Reform seriously and so does the chief. Reporter i did reach out to the chief today. So far he has no comment on this protest. In the meantime, the u. S. Department of justice is conducting a thorough review of the San Francisco Police Department at the request of the chief and the mayor. Live in San Francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. The deadline is looming in san jose for the highspeed rail project. Officials are meeting now. Kiet do is standing by live. Reporter the highspeed Rail Authority is inside the building. They do have the chance to pass their own Business Plan but they have not yet done so. By law, it has to be done in the next nine days. The board has received 1600 comments, complaints and suggestions since the deadline on monday and the staff just finished compiling them all trying to make sense of it. The project is still on track to go from fresno to san jose first before going to southern california. But it looks like the board will now strongly consider extending the first phase another 100 miles south to bakersfield. Whats more, the board will now also strongly consider making a stop in merced. Board chairman dan richards talked about the biggest criticism he hears all the time and thats lack of funding. Youre saying that if you build highspeed rail investors will come . We know the investors are there right now. The only thing that they need is to see because we dont have any experience with high speed rail in the u. S. , they need to see the first leg up and running. And they have told us that. That money is out there on the sidelines. Theres probably 20 billion of combined potential investment for the highspeed rail system. Reporter is there anything that you can see right now thats going to snag the train coming to san jose first . I think the legal barriers are out of the way now. The bond funding is available. The cap and trade funds are now available. I think the only thing that can slow us down is not getting the studies done quickly. Reporter and that was rod diridon senior president of the u. S. Highspeed Rail Authority expressing confidence that if all the counties and cities Work Together and expedite the studs, highspeed rail should come to the south bay by 2025. That will cut the threehour trip from fresno to san jose down to 40 minutes and would open up a whole new supply of Affordable Housing in the central valley. Im being told that the board will meet at least through lunchtime. If they dont pass this Business Plan today they will have to schedule another meeting for next week. New at noon, volkswagen has agreed to buy back or fix hundreds of thousands of vehicles that were rigged to cheat on emissions tests. A federal judge in San Francisco announced the deal this morning. It applies to the owners of about 480,000 vw cars with two liter diesel engines that were sold between 2009 and 2015. They will be able to choose between a buyback or having their cars repaired. People with leased cars would be allowed to cancel the leases. This vw owner says its the least the company can do. They wasted their intelligence on scamming people instead of making them environmentally fantastic cars. Now, the deal does not affect the owners of approximately 90,000 vw, audi and porsche cars with three liter engines. Those cars are more complicated to repair. More details of todays agreement should be made public by june 21. Ed lee just signed a parental leave bill into law giving new parents six weeks of paid time off. The state already pays 55 of a parents salary for six weeks. The companies with more than 20 employees must pay the other 45 . Firefighters have knocked down a fastmoving fire that hit two apartment buildings in the mission. It started at 8 30 this morning in a block of buildings on 17th street near guerrero. It sent smoke from the roof. No word on the cause. Investigators think the flames started in between the buildings and then spread to the back. No one was hurt. In oakland, firefighters battling a vacant warehouse fire found a man dead inside. The fire erupted just before 3 00 this morning on 56th avenue not far from the oakland coliseum. Crews found the body on the ground floor in what looked like a makeshift bedroom. They are looking into whether the man was part of a group of squatters living in the building. He meant so much to people mere in minnesota. Hundreds are gathered here. Police have closed down the road to accommodate people coming here to mourn the loss of prince. Theres even a makeshift memorial on the fence outside of paisley park. Prince did perform here shortly saturday after, um, late night party. He did come show piano to his fans he did perform for a quick couple of seconds but went back to his room saying that he was not feeling well. Fans tell me they come here to paisley park because prince always made fans feel like family. They were always welcome here to paisley park. He had lots of concerts here. Some of them spontaneous, some planned. They are coming here now. Paisley park is more of a healing space with the fans who are shocked and devastated that prince is dead at 57. All right. Thank you.
