This happened about 45 minutes ago. Kpix 5 reporter devin fehely just got on the scene a few minutes ago. Devin, he is on the phone right now, have you been able to find out anything . Reporter yes. Im here at the bart station at the intersection of grand and c street in hayward. I spoke to a witness of the shooting a short time ago. He tells me there was an exchange of gunfire. An officer was shot as well as the suspect. Now, he says that it appears that the officer had been shot in the armed. He actually witnessed that officer and a second officer actually try to arrest or put handcuffs on the suspect. That was obviously complicated by the fact that the officer had been shot in the arm and that he appeared to struggle to get those handcuffs on the suspect. Now, what led up to that shooting is still somewhat unclear. We are continuing to gather information here at the scene. There is a large perimeter in front of the bart station. I would say that there are perhaps somewhere in the vicinity of two dozen Police Officers that are here on the scene securing the scene and investigating at this point. As we learn more information, we will of course bring it to you. In hayward, im devin fehely, kpix 5. Can you tell are people able to still use the bart station . Reporter at this point it doesnt appear that they are able to access the bart station and perhaps just the parking structure because the police have cordoned off probably about a block or block and a half around the bart station. Theres been some question, too, we know its a Police Officer. Is this a bart Police Officer or a hayward Police Officer . Any clue on that . Reporter that is somewhat unclear at this point. I can tell you just initially that there are both Hayward Police and bart Police Officers that are here at the scene. So there is a joint response and investigation. But as to whether or not it was a bart officer or a hayward Police Officer that was shot, is not entirely clear at this point. It sounds like this is just from witness information but perhaps this officer who was shot was able to still attempt to arrest a person that would likely indicate that the injuries are not life threatening. We understand that officer was sent to the hospital. The witness who saw this and thats going to be some of the best information that youre going to get so that the officer appeared to have been shot in the arm, there was another officer and that they were trying to subdue an arrest and handcuff the suspect. He did say that it appears that the officers struggled to get the handcuffs on the suspect in part because of the injuries to his arm but presumably if he was in any position to try and take that suspect into custody and help get him handcuffed, then we have to hope it was a nonlifethreatening injuries. This is devin fehely live for us at the bart station. An officer has been shot. Possibly another person as well at the hayward bart station near a parking garage. We are going to continue to gather more details on this breaking news story and follow it on cbssf. Com as well as our newscasts this evening.
