but the man police shot is still in the hospital and will soon be sent to jail. it was in this wooded creek bed where officers started looking for two missing brothers who live nearby. one 11, the other 12. >> it just shows you ton predictability of police work. >> reporter: officers soon found themselves facing off with man whom they said live in a tent here, armed with two knives. this is one of them. >> takes one of the five and throws it at -- the deputies. an attempt we believe to stab them. >> reporter: the 46-year-old suspect james saunders charged at them with the other knife. >> our deputies opened fire on them with their handguns. they wound him. he's detained. >> reporter: the boys were later found not in the woods but walking to their dad's house in newark. this matter is still under investigation by the alameda county sheriff's office and d.a. kpix 5. >> that suspect will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and attempted murder. happening today, the three drifters accuse in two bay area murders are back to northern california from oregon. michael engel, lampley, and oligood killed a 23-year-old pack packer on october 3 and shot to death a 67-year-old taint ricotta teacher on a hiking trail days later. they were arrested last week in portland. the three could make their first court appearance tomorrow in marin county. a bay area county inside a tahoe rental car when a plane crashed feet away said people tried desperately to save the two victims but couldn't. rob mcfadden and his wife were in south lake tahoe saturday night when they heard a boom, looked outside and saw flames. they rushed out and realized it was a plane that crashed. kpix 5 found the plane is register to conrad yu of oakland. >> really nice guy. i mean neighbors described yu as an experienced pilot who flew plane in the vietnam war. yu told a neighbor last week he was work on his plane, including replacing the spark plugs. the oakland police department is getting a $290,000 grant to jump start a program aimed at preventing traffic-related deaths. california traffic safety officials said it will provide more dui checkpoints and field sobriety test training. traffic-related deaths have slowly been on the rise since 2010. texting and driving may also be a reason for the increase. still not clear who's at fault after a fatal collision involving a bicyclist and muni bus in san francisco over the weekend. the bus struck the cyclist yesterday afternoon near market and battery street. investigators said the 48-year- old male cyclist was killed after he got caught between two muni buses and ended up wedged beneath the bus. >> at some point, the bicyclist lost control and fell into the side of the vehicle. >> traffic on market street was backed up for blocks while officers and officials tried to move the bus and body. 30 minutes later, a second cyclist was hit near chestnut street by a horse trailer being pull by a vehicle. investigators said her injuries are not life threatening. a new proposal would allow prison inmate with violent backgrounds to fight california wildfire with the idea raising concerns about public safety. now only low-risk inmate with no history of violent crimes can join the prison firefighting unit. the proposal to add inmates with violent offenses would be those who have had years of good behavior. parent will demand an east by a school board do something about a disruptive student. 30 parents have stopped sending their kids to class because they said mazziano elementary is too dangerous. a third-grader is biting and kick other children and throwing rock and other things at students and teachers. >> just want the board to listen. the district to listen and to just make the "hi, ms. mae began." "is tanisha here yet?" >> reporter: tanisha was a saved child in a neighborhood where many are not. she was too young to understand. but her grandmother remembers what the police told her. >> as long as this woman doesn't have a place to stay, she cannot have these kids. whether you keep them or whoever -- she was homeless. >> reporter: when they were order to course, her parents didn't show up. >> why didn't they come? why didn't they, like, cooperate with them? like they do not want me? what was the reason behind it? >> reporter: mae took in all four grandchildren and at age 55 went back to work to support them. >> you just be busy. i tell the pastor -- i go to bed tire and wake up tired. what else you want to know? >> i know she didn't do this. she did it for us and everything -- makes me so wanted. >> reporter: the healing began with a grandmother. >> she use to make us read every night before we used to go to bed so that's -- i really enjoy reading. i collaborate those ideas together. >> reporter: which paid off and so did the help from students rising above. >> a lot of people helpedded me through the journey so, uh -- special.
