gusty offshore winds and low humidity. we're going to have a complete look at your 7 day later in the show. developing news this morning. police are trying to establish a motive after a woman was stabbed inside of a hotel. it happened just shortly after 5:00 p.m. at the embassy suits. police found a 30-year-old woman on the third floor stabbed several times. they believe she was attacked in her room on the 9th floor and knew her attacker. hotel elevators were closed during the investigation. the woman has serious injuries but she is expected to survive. police are waiting to talk to her to establish what may have led up to that attack. we have new video of the chaos that unfolded last night at lax. a prank call led officers to believe there was a gunman loose inside the airport. >> [screaming] on the ground. everybody get down. >> cell pw s officers swarmed terminal 4 of lax. the entire ordeal started with a crash that people say sounded like gunfire. >> people outside terminal four after lax police responded to a call about a man with a gun. on the same place a car crash took place outside terminal 5. a minivan may have clipped a car and a pedestrian before hitting a building. >> a driver had a medical emergency which caused her to lose control of the vehicle. >> a tsa officer was fatally shot earlier this month so it caused chaos. many took to social media. >> come inside. close the doors. >> on the gr. everybody get down. >> video shot by passengers shows the chaos. police canvassed the terminal. people arriving were only told there was a situation. >> they had to clear out the whole terminal. >> they evacuated the terminal. >> and they have the bomb snif. >> traffic came to a standstill around the horseshoe and outside the airport. travelers walking and running to catch flights after lax officials determined no shots were fired. it was the sound of the car accident in terminal 5. >> who occurred here was a hyper sensitivity to who occurred on the 1st that caused people to react in the way that they did. i don't want to -- i'm not -- i don't have a problem with that. it's just there's consequences to it. >> about 4,600 arriving and departing travelers were impacted. a total of 60 flights were delayed. san jose state has suspended a fourth student in the case of an alleged racial bullying. a police report says at least three white students used slurs and forced their african american roommate to wear a bike lock arnold his neck. a student who lived next door sensed something was not right. >> they seemed pretty normal. there was something about him te different. i couldn't tell what it was. when this came out it made sense. >> the student suspended on friday isn't being identified because he was a minor at the time. on monday san jose state hands to hold a press conference with the naacp to discuss the criminal charges against those students. bart's two largest unions say they are considering legal action over their contract. the board of directors approved it but omitted a family leave provision. the union said they ratified it in good faith. a fire burning near the geyser in sonoma county has expanded to 2,500 acres. it's only 10% containing and threatening a geo thermal power plant. homes have been evacuated. firefighters say gusty winds are making that more difficult to fight. convicted murder joseph naso will be put to death. he was found guilty of killing six women across the bay area. yesterday a judge said the evidence proved naso inflicted levels of suffering and cruelty. a probation search turned up photographs. a suspected dog killer is in custody. last december a driver pulled over in san francisco to look for her cell phone. that's when a man robbed her. when the woman's dog started barking police say the suspect grabbed that dog, threw it onto the street and it died. police arrested 36-year-old lorese barrett wednesday at his house. he's charged with robbery and animal cruelty. here's your chance to play a real life detective. san jose police are starting a tv show called make the call to get people to help solve murder cases. it's launching on create tv on channel 30 in san jose. it's focused on 12 unsolved killings. the victim's family members appear on the show to put a face to the crime. >> i just want somebody to come forward. it hurts, especially going just one of 16 that touched down in illinois last weekend. 1, 500 homes were destroyed. things were nearly as bad here during the wind storm but we have several trees that came down across the bay area. check out this 100-year-old tree that was just ripped from its roots by strong winds. this is at lake merit in oakland. there were around 200 downed trees in oakland alone during thursday the situation. >> wendy lee is research associate at the glad stone institute. she's studying how the molecules in the brain work, what causes degenerative diseases like alzheimer's. >> i'm fascinated by how the brain works. i love to learn about it. >> she works with a cutting edge research team that eventually hopes to develop a drug to cure alzheimer's. pretty impressive stuff for a young woman who just graduated from cal this year. >> she made a mocular cell. when we met her she was a senion incoln high school in san francisco, studying during her lunch break and on her own. she worked to support herself. her mother died of cancer and she has no father in her life. >> if i don't work i won't have money to pay for my rent and nowhere to live. >> how would you describe how difficult this last year has been for her? >> on a scale of one to ten i would put myself in her shoes at her age for 11. >> her mother brought here her for a better life. she got help from food stamps and students rising above. >> i'm lonely all the time. when i go home at thieth i'm jug -- at night i'm sitting in a room that's quiet and by myself. >> five years later she's not lonely anymore. her students rising above mentors maryland and jerry helped her move. they celebrate holidays with her. >> their help meant so much to me because i'm really living in this world by myself. >> while interviewing for scholarships she met professor dave. >> i told her i would recommend her but only if she agreed to read with me. >> her reading was a problem. the professor worked with her e. >> i couldn't believe someone would do that for a total stranger. >> so she graduated from uc berkeley with much more than a college degree. >> family doesn't have to be blood related. people care about you even
