Multiple sources tell kpix 5 they successfully recovered a gun from the bay believed to be the weapon used to murder 32 yearold kate steinle. Just as commuters were crowding the embarcadero alongside joggers and tourists. San Francisco Police say 45 yearold Francisco Sanchez just walked up to a random woman and opened fire. It happened so fast, kate didnt immediately realize she had been hit. There were no words exchanged between the suspect and the victim. The victim said something to her family members to the extent that she didnt feel well like something she realized that something had just taken place with respect to her and she fell to the ground. Reporter bystanders including her own father tried to do cpr but it was too late. Sanchez was arrested a short time later about a mile south over by pier 40. Police say he is from texas and is on probation from there. For what crime . Investigators arent saying. The next generation of self driving cars launches from that garage right there behind me. The new pod car design finally hit the public streets last week. But since theres only two on the road and they only drive a few minutes a day, catching a glimpse is rare. For now, this is some of the first video taken of them out on a public street. The computer is set to a very cautious defensive driving mode so its limited to 25 miles an hour. We saw them come to a complete stop at the line so no rolling california stops here. We also saw that they seemed to prefer driving more towards the middle of the street. So for now human passengers are still required to take over in case of an emergency. So do not expect to see them driving around empty. The california dmv has not yet resolved how they are going to handle that. So thats why you dont see any Autonomous Vehicles on road without any drivers. Because that is not allowed right now. Reporter so the company only has two of these pod cars on the public streets. But google has 25 total registered with the dmv. So expect to see many more of these pod cars rolling out over the next knew months and weeks. Only on 5 kiet do shows us the prototype in action. Reporter i have seen the future of selfdriving cars and it is adorable. Googles next generation of Autonomous Vehicles began testing last week in Mountain View. The pod car is sleek with a black sensor on top. Compare that to the old fleet of lexus suvs with sensors everywhere. The new pod car has no trunk and Steering Wheel gas and brake pedals all removable. Pod car is very cautious. Top speed is limited to 25 miles an hour. We saw them come to full stops right on the line. For some reason, this one was driving in the middle of the lane as it cruised through a neighborhood. Google also released more about what the car sees with its spinning radar. It tracks and calculates the path of every moving object making evasive maneuvers when necessary. It can even recognize a hand signal of a police officer. Over the past six years, google has amassed a vast database of shapes of pedestrians to help the computer make sense of the world around it. For years, google stayed tight lipped about crashes. This photo from 2011 was one of the few fenderbenders ever captured on camera. But thanks to a new state law, Companies Must now use this form to report all accidents to the dmv. Google took it one step further and now publishes monthly crash reports online. In six years and more than a million miles in autonomous mode google has been involved in 15 accidents none of them the fault of the computer. In each instance the passenger was there to exchange information. Whoever is in command and control of the vehicle thats the driver.
