In berkeley a setback for an antimarxism rally for sunday. City leaders denied organizers a permit. Still, Christin Ayers shows just police and even the post office expect unrest. If they get violent we are prepared. Reporter berkeleys police chief wouldnt give specifics on how officers will handle violent clashes at the anti marxism free speech rally sunday in Berkeley Civic Center park but he says they learned from events like this. He says this time around, there will be one major difference. The number of officers on the ground. There are more resources out here at this event. It will look and feel different than the previous one. Reporter the rally will not be permitted. The city rejected a permit application submitted by organizers saying it was incomplete and late. The City Attorney called the illegal living space a fire trap. About 30 people lived underground in small single room units sharing two kitchens and two bathrooms. [ speaking spanish ] it was so dark i couldnt tell if it was day or night. No windows, only one door. From my unit it looked like a tunnel. Reporter despite the living conditions, she lived in the unit for almost 10 years. [ speaking spanish ] we couldnt afford to move. Everything else in the city was so expensive. When we found it, we thought it was a blessing. Reporter this is the entrance to the illegal units in the basement and according to this lease, that space was rented ernesto. The 200footlong basement is under a laundromat. Above it a church. Heres where it gets interesting. That church rented to none other than ernesto perez. [ speaking spanish ] when i first moved here i started going to church above the laundromat. At church they said they would help people find places to live if they didnt have a place to stay. Reporter every, single tenant living in the basement was there because of hearing about the illegal units from people who worked at the church. They all went through ernesto one of the Church Elders and he collected the rent monthly including the 1,000 in cash one paid for a tiny room but then ernesto wanted more. He wanted the tenants to help him raise money to buy the building. [ speaking spanish ] we did bake sales and car washes and tried to get donations. We turned over all the money to the church. Reporter but after a falling out between church leaders, the pastor left, the half Million Dollars disappeared, and the tenants were stuck living in hell. [ speaking spanish ] i couldnt go back to church after that. I had given so much of my life to try to help. And we were left with nothing. Reporter the familys bad luck only got worse. Claudia was diagnosed shortly after with sinus cancer. She says it was caused by the living conditions. The citys lawsuit cites Health Issues like mold, mildew and rodents. Plus, safety hazard like leaking pipes from the laundromat upstairs, dangerous wires and extension cords crisscrossing the ceiling and no hot water or heat. Tenants were using the electric stove as their source of heat because there was no other means of warming up the area. Reporter the tenants are now banding together and filed their own lawsuit against ernesto and the buildings owner. He knew that that is not a place that people should be living and so he could have made other choices as could the owners of the building. Reporter the tenants hope to recover enough to rebuild their lives. It means paying off 80,000 in medical bills for one couple and maybe being able to afford a house, one with windows. In San Francisco, katie nielsen, kpix 5. We reached out to the landlords attorney and he said no comment. Growing concern among some locals in san jose that as a massive google complex goes up, rents will, as well. The tech giant plans to build an 8,000squarefoot complex near the diridon train station. At a town hall meeting organized by Silicon Valley rising, many locals expressed worries that the area would see a rise in prices cross the board. Whats happened in the mission could happen in san jose where our communities are displaced and gentrified. I just worry that if google comes in, its going to make everything twice as bad. The city is continuing to talk with google over the land deal but so far the conversations have been behind closed doors. Hurricane harvey strengthened to a cat2 storm.
