It comes after an 8. 3 magnitude quake off the coast of chile yesterday afternoon. Five people died and another is missing. At least one Million People evacuated. Authorities are assessing damage in coastal towns that saw flooding from small tsunamis. It caught people in the area off guard. [ speaking spanish ] i look and the water was already coming. The quake lasted for three minutes causing buildings to sway in the capital of santiago. Wet weather providing leaf for crews battling the valley fire. Its 30 contained. Evacuees are in tents in rainy weather. This morning the hunt for those missing continues. The fire killed one woman. At least four others are unaccounted for. This rain was a mixed blessing for people. It was a wet and soggy and cold night here really. This morning, people will get another chance to go and check on their properties with a Sheriff Department escort. People here at the napa county fairgrounds did their best to try to waterproof their tents with tarps. It did make for a rough evening though, bringing hope the this rain would help firefighters get the valley fire under control and it did. The rain has helped us immensely slowing the progression of the fire. It gives me a it improves the ability to get out there and make good headway. Reporter fire crews have been working on their containment lines. They did so through the night mopping up hot spots. The fire has burned more than 70,000 acres. The real concern right now is downed power lines. They are dangling all over neighborhoods that have been burned, places like middletown. And this morning, firefighters are still dealing with wet roads. Its been very foggy, as well. There is the chance of mud slides. So just more challenges as we work toward full containment on this fire. And these people are trying to get their lives back together. Live in calistoga, anne makovec, kpix 5. 69yearold leonard neft a retired reporter for the mercury news last spoke with his wife saturday night. Once the fire started, nefts wife begged him to evacuate their lake county home. The last phone call, i told him, please, hon, you need to leave. You need to leave. And, um, he said, i dont think i cab get out now but im going to try. And i can hear he was scared. He was getting scared. He made a run for it and thats the last anyone heard from him. Their home burned down saturday night and the 69yearolds burnedout car was found later about a half mile down the road. This morning, the butte fire has claimed another life. A mans body was found in calaveras county. He is the second person to die in the fire. Pg e says one of its power lines may have hit a tree starting the fire but its waiting to hear from investigators. The butte fire is now 47 won tainted and has charred more than 71,000 acres. Some welcome relief overnight except for the folks at the Evacuation Center with the tents. But they needed the rain. The people around the bay area really rallied and a lot of tarps showed up, a lot of tents showed up, a lot of rain jackets and, you know, were all working together for this. And today were kind of in between. We have the passage of an area of low pressure. Now we have High Pressure building in so well be drying out at the Evacuation Centers. The current air temperatures not too bad for this Early Morning in the 50s and 60s so winds are calm and thats why were picking up areas of fog around the santa rosa area and napa. Sometimes the visibility in some of the areas in some pockets about a quarter mile. Again, there you have the numbers. 60 degrees in San Francisco. Heres how we plan out your temperatures today. Sunshine, 60s beaches, 70s peninsula, 70s morgan hill. Outside number 82 in pleasanton, blackhawk and danville. North bay numbers in the 60s, 70s and 80 in sonoma. Clearlake high in the upper 70s. We are getting first reports of an accident, though, on i80 in richmond westbound at hilltop drive. Chp is on the way to check that out. But the bay bridge you can see from these live pictures looking good just a brief delay in a couple of cash lanes and we have had delays all week long because of the Dreamforce Convention in San Francisco. It will delay traffic not only at near Moscone Center but delays have spilled out on the surrounding districts including union square and the embarcadero. Keep that in mind. The mercury news reports correctional deputies Matthew Farris sent these Text Messages to colleague Rafael Rodriguez a month earlier. I love 6, a sell blocks. a bail hearing is scheduled tomorrow for farris, rodriguez and jereh lubin. The three guards have been charged in last months death of mentally ill inmate michael tyree. Prosecutors say the three didnt report the incident with tyree and failed to ask for any medical help. Yesterday, dozens of correctional cadets went through an Emergency Training session on how to deal with mental lil inmates. Normally that training would take place after the cadets graduate but sheriff lori smith decided to move it up. Searchers have found the bodies of six hikers who got trapped by floodwaters in utahs Zion National park. One hiker is still missing. Heavy rain flooded parts of the park monday evening. Park Officials Say the hikers got a permit to hike in keyhole canyon early that morning just hours before a Flash Flood Warning was issued. But thats still a good 7 degrees below average and 70s will be common across the northern portion of the bay area. I want to spend some time on this sevenday forecast because tomorrow we take a leap in the numbers into the mid80s. Then we jump up into the mid 90s. We increase that by 12 degrees inland areas on saturday. And then by sunday, 102 degrees well inland. I got to tell you, one computer model even suggests 104 degrees. Westbound 580 this accident off to the righthand shoulder involving a motorcycle, traffic was already slow in the area anyway. This is the regular commute where youre going to see heavy traffic from the 205 interchange approaching vasco. So expect those delays this morning. The bay bridge toll plaza still in good shape. And all overnight roadwork has been picked up all lanes now open once youre on the bridge heading into San Francisco. Once in the city, remember youre going to run into delays anywhere near Moscone Center because of this weeks convention out there. It was a chicken a few weeks ago. And that guy yesterday. The oakland chp shared this photo of the duck in the back of his cruiser. It was wandering around westbound 80 near powell street. The duck was captured taken to an Animal Shelter in berkeley this came a couple weeks after that chicken caused trouble after wandering on the bay bridge toll plaza. Some tennessee neighbors were surprised and saw a bear had climbed into a neighbors third floor balcony. For about 10 minutes they watched the bear climb back down. I have seen bears in all the 15 years i have been here. But i have never seen a bear climb the balconies. Neighbors say they have seen that bear before walking through the parking lots and nosing through dumpsters. A texas teenager becomes famous overnight after being detained for bringing a homemade clock to school. 14yearold Ahmed Mohamed was arrested after he showed an english teacher in Irving Texas High School what he had made, a homemade clock.
