The fingerpointing is escalating over the Major Oil Spill off the Santa Barbara county coast. Anne makovec has the very latest from the newsroom. Reporter california senators are calling the response to the oil spill insufficient. It looks like it took about an hour and a half for the Pipeline Company to even notify emergency officials that there had been a spill. That happened near goleta on may 19 spilling crude down a culvert into the ocean off the southern Santa Barbara county coast that left beaches black, creating a 10squaremile slick on the pacific. Senators boxer and feinstein are asking federal regulators to give more details on the response by the company, which is plains all american pipeline. And farther south, beaches along the Los Angeles County coastline are closed as the coast guard investigates balls of tar that have been washing ashore. Cleanup crews have been working through the night to remove them. It appears to be a barrel or two of oil thats much less than the massive amounts spilled near Santa Barbara. Officials arent sure if they are related. We may never know. Thats definitely one of the things that were working on. So its still too early to tell what the source is. Reporter those tar balls were found along almost 7 miles of beach from the el segundo jetty south to redondo beach. The coast guard says those beaches will remain closed until at least noon today when the Public Health department will decide if the shoreline is safe. Anne, if its determined the tar balls are not from the oil spill, what could be causing them . There is a refinery and offshore Oil Tanker Terminal nearby. But the u. S. Coast guard did not find any sort of sheen on the ocean from a spill. So it could also be from natural seepage from underground. Live in the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5.
