High winds and technical problems forced nasa to postpone the takeoff yesterday. This is just a test flight. The capsule is going to carry people to destinations like the asteroids, the moon and mars. Orions debut today will be brief just 4. 5 hours from launch to splashdown with two orbits of earth. For the first time in 42 years nasa is sending a spacecraft built for humans further than 200 miles from university. The previous time was the apollo 17 moon shot. And its nasas first new spaceship since the shuttle. Nasa ames put a big role in developing and preparing the heat shield one of the Biggest Challenges for orion. A 16yearold girl isist in aing attempted murder charges for allegedly running over a Police Officer with a car. It happened in san leandro yesterday when officers were investigating a stolen vehicle. Police say a 19yearold man got out of the car and then took off running. He was eventually caught. Investigators say the 16year old girl who was still in the car stepped on the gas and one officer jumped out of the way. But the car hit a second officer running over his leg. Im very surprised. We do see kids commit Violent Crimes in this case im surprised to see that its someone thats 16 years old driving a stolen car and was willing to run over a Police Officer to get away. Officers did open fire on the driver. She was injured but its not clear if it was by gunfire. Both suspects face multiple charges. A homeless man who was beaten to death in San Francisco had more than 1,000 dollars on him. His attackers never touched his money. Police say the attack was just for fun. This dark video captured the brutal beating last week in the financial district. It shows three men attacking tai lam as he slept. 67yearold man was a polio victim who used crutches to walk. Officers handed out flyers near the attack scene yesterday hoping someone might recognize the suspects. Now that san jose is closed the jungle homeless are on the move. Reporter well, you know, i am going to keep my voice low here because we got some folks that are sleeping around us. And youre right, that was one of the Big Questions yesterday when the jungle was shut down. Where would some of these people go . A lot of them found housing. Some were still waiting for housing. And as you can see here, some of them just walked right down the street. Some of the homeless migrated to a walmart parking lot on story road less than half mile away. We have shopping carts full of personal belongings on the grass between the street and walmart. I counted aboutle campsites and twice as 8 campsites and twice as many shopping carts. They just dont have a place to go. Yesterday, dozens of cleanup crews, Police Officers and caseworkers invaded the jungle. They used bobcats and dump trucks and started the twoweek process of clearing out the tons of debris. At its peak, the jungle was home to 350 people making it one. Largest encampments in the nation one of the largest encampments in the nation. They were forced by environmental officials and a group who threatened to sue the city over the trash and human waste polluting coyote creek. The last diehards stayed until the last minute. Terrible, just horrible, rotten, terrible, terrible what theyre doing, totally terrible, totally insensitive, you know, i wasnt bothering anybody. This is an unsafe, unsanitary environment. Reporter San Jose Police will guard that area over the next couple of days as a permanent fence is built around the structure. Now, the protests were over a grand jury decision not to charge a Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo in garners death. The grand jury would have had to determine pantaleo knew there was a substantial risk garner would die in order for him to be held criminally negligent. The lawyer and police union say garners health caused his death. Protestors were also out in the bay area last night. They staged a diein at powell and Market Streets in San Francisco. In oakland, demonstrators marched from downtown into east oakland. A fremont preschool is now shut down and its license suspended. Last week we told you about enlight preschool. Two children were hurt when a bookcase fell over and landed on them. One child had a fractured skull. The state shut down the facility yesterday and is notifying parents. The preschool has 15 days to appeal. Suspended burlingame fire chief mark ladas is under orders to stay in california while his court case continues. He and his wife peta are accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars in a credit card scam. She posted bail but then fled the country. There is now a warrant out for her arrest. The chief is due back in court in january. A 4 million budget shortfall is forcing the state senate to cut jobs. 39 employees out of 1,000 Staff Members will all be laid off. Reporter nasa want to make sure everything works before eventually sending astronauts to mars. And liftoff at dawn, the dawn of orion. Reporter the orion spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral and launched nasa into the future. Nasa was forced to cancel the original launch thursday because of strong winds and a problem with a rocket valve. Todays successful takeoff marks the crafts maiden voyage. Approximately now 1341 feet per second. Reporter orion is designed to one day take astronauts to mars. But todays 4. 5hour Unmanned Mission is a test flight. The craft is orbiting the earth twice reaching some 3600 miles into space. It will reenter through temperatures near 4,000 degrees and splash down in the pacific. Cbs news space consultant bill harwood says this is one of the biggest heat shields nasa has ever built. She is on a hoist on a high rise when it got stuck on the 22nd floor. Its an elevator on the outside of the building since its under construction. She was never in danger. She just couldnt get down. Crews freed her eventually. The same construction site had a gas leak a few weeks ago forcing thousands of people to evacuate. It is 5 45 right now. Lets check the roads with elizabeth. The sinkhole has become quite the tourist attraction and schools are taking field trips to see it but as you can see in this video crews are working to repair it. Reporter the centers for Disease Control and prevention is alerting doctors that a flu virus strain has emerged this season that doesnt look like the strain in this years flu vaccine. What this may mean is that the vaccine may work less well against flu viruses this year compared to the average year. Reporter the cdc says about half the flu samples tested this season are a new h3n2 strain which tends to cause more severe disease especially in very Young Children and elderly. Pregnant women and people with chronic conditions such as asthma and Heart Disease are also at high risk. Federal Health Officials are asking doctors to be vigilant about prescribing antiviral medications to patients as soon as they develop symptoms. It will make the disease shorter and less likely to be hospitalized or die.
