million. the jury holding the two men convicted of beating stow accountable for 3 million of that. >> it's unfortunate what happened. we're all glad that, you know, it's -- it was a verdict and it was for the family. >> reporter: stow's family says while bryan may not understand the impact, they are thankful his name is cleared. >> i was so excited when they got to question number 4 asking about how much they attributed to bryan for this. and none of them attributed any of this to bryan. >> reporter: juliette goodrich, kpix 5. >> a lawyer for the dodgers says there is no decision yet on whether to appeal the verdict. an alleged prostitute is charged in the death of a google executive. alix tichelman appeared in court yesterday. the charges include manslaughter and heroin possession. prosecutors say the manslaughter could be upgraded to murder charges. police say tichelman gave forrest hayes a lethal dose of heroin on his luxury yacht in november. >> i feel bad for the family and what they went through and what really came of this whole thing. >> much of the evidence is on video from a security camera in the boat's cabin. police told the santa cruz sentinel it shows tichelman drinking a glass of wine and a fingerprint from that glass helped identify her. police also say tichelman's distinct tatoos are visible in the video. she is due back in court next wednesday for further arraignment. a 15-year-old girl is the only survivor of the shooting rampage and she helped police catch the suspect. it happened outside houston, texas last night. police say a man killed four children and two adults. the girl, who is in critical condition, was able to call 911. she said the shooter was on his way to kill her grandparents. plus caught up with him and arrested him after a three-hour standoff. the man was distraught over a recent breakup. >> in lowell massachusetts, five people are missing after an apartment building fire. much of the roof from the building is gop. there are unconfirmed reports -- is gone. there are unconfirmed reports that several people were taken to nearby hospitals. the fire was first reported by a police officer who noticed smoke. a juvenile is under arrest for a san diego county fire that burned dozens of homes. the fire in san marcos was set in may. it destroyed 36 homes and one business. investigators say that photos and public tips led them to the underaged suspect. but he is not suspected in connection with other fires that burned in the area at about the same time. california is about to get tougher on people who waste water during this drought. people could be fined up to $500 for various violations. this goes from overwatering a lawn to washing a car with a hose. water districts could get fined for $10,000 a day for not issuing water restrictions. no washing sidewalks and driveways to the point of runoff as well as lawns and gardens. cars can only be washed with a shutoff nozzle on the hose. the state water board is scheduled to consider the regulations on tuesday. you know, i have been sneaking a look at your satellite loop, mr. karnow, and we still have a monsoonal thing going on later in the day. >> but most of that will be confined over the sierra nevada now. so looks like the sea breeze is kicking in again today. low clouds and fog. no surprise, slowly burning off today temperatures down a few more degrees. those monsoonal clouds brian was talking about, you can see it creeping up over the sierra nevada, maybe some more thunderstorms in that direction. so if you are going to the high country, you may see more throughout the day. today 60s and 70s around the bay, 80s in the valleys. 60s and patchy fog along the coastline. out the door it's gray skies again. the temperatures in the 50s and low 60s this morning. by the afternoon, still warm, 78 in san jose this afternoon, 69 in observations. 66 in san francisco. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. fortunately no accidents out the door. you will hit some overnight roadwork. this is the half hour where they really start to wrap things up. if you are traveling in san leandro, this is oakland, but if you are continuing southbound, those headlights are heading towards davis, marina that area continues to have lane blocked. they had a full freeway closure southbound 880 at davis overnight. and right now, it sounds like just a couple of lanes are closed. our sensors are not picking up any delay in the area. at this point you get fine. by 5:00 in the next 20 minutes they should have everything wrapped up. here's a live look at westbound and eastbound 580 traffic. this is near the dublin interchange. in pleasanton you could still see some roadwork eastbound between pleasanton and livermore westbound in the commute direction, all that roadwork is picked up by 4:00. and drive time still looks clear as well, 14 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange, dublin- pleasanton. a quick live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. once again, just the left lanes filling in a little bit in the cash lanes but if you have a fast track, our very good to go all across the span and from oakland to san francisco should take about 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. a man who just finished serving prison time for drunk driving in january is in custody again accused of it again. robert schiro appeared drunk when he hit a parked car in saratoga last week. it's disturbing news for a previous victim of schiro's, ashley nelson. she says she still suffers from head injuries see she received in 2009 -- -- she says she still suffers from head injuries that she received in 2009 when he hit her while she feels riding a bike. >> it's a nightmare. he hasn't shown remorse. he is a chronic alcoholic. he still smirks at me in court. >> schiro is due back in court at the end. month for a bail hearing. today activists wrap up efforts to keep pot clubs from being shut down in san jose. they say new rules set to take effect next friday threaten to close 73 facilities so they are trying to gather 100,000 petition signatures to challenge those changes. a protest is planned all afternoon outside city hall. a lawyer has asked russia to extend temporary asylum for edward snowden. asylum for the u.s. security contractor-turned-fugitive expires at the end of this month. snowden wants to avoid returning to the u.s., which wants to try him for leaking classified documents to the media. he faces charges of espionage and theft of government property. diplomatic efforts are under way to end the fighting between israel and palestine. as tara mergener reports, a cease-fire is needed as rocket attacks escalate. reporter: more explosions lit the sky over gaza early thursday as israeli forces carried out predawn raids against hamas militants. israel says it hit hundreds of terror sites overnight including this hidden rocket launching site in gaza. the israelis claim it held rockets capable of striking tel aviv and jerusalem. the palestinians claim dozens have been killed including many civilians during this week's assault. palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas accused the israelis of genocide but israel's prime minister says hamas is deliberately putting civilians into harm's way. >> embeds terrorists in hospitals and schools and mosques, apartment buildings, throughout the gaza strip. >> reporter: hamas is firing its missiles further for that israel. [ sirens ] >> reporter: and people in tel aviv are on high alert once again after israel's iron dome defense system blocked another rocket attack this morning. a ground assault may be next. thousands of israeli troops are lining the gaza border while hamas released a video showing its fighters training under water. >> gaza is on a knife edge. a deteriorating situation is leading to a downward spiral. >> reporter: the u.n. secretary- general has called an urgent meeting on israel for this morning. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. >> despite diplomatic interinvestigation from other countries neither the israelis nor hamas are showing any sign of halting fighting. the championship match for the 2014 world cup of soccer is now set. yesterday's semifinal between the netherlands and argentina was scoreless in regulation and overtime so it was decided by a shootout. >> argentina is going to the world cup final. >> argentina will make its first appearance in the world cup final in 24 years. that will be against germany. the two teams met twice before in the world cup finals. argentina won in 1986. germany won in 1990. there were some violent incidents after host country brazil's blowout loss to germany on tuesday. upset fans torched buses in sao paulo destroying at least 17. three men were arrested and there's no word of any serious injuries. time now 4:40. president obama discusses the growing crisis along the border with mexico. the legislation the president is urging congress to act on. >> what's cool about your school? you can email your nomination to us coolschools@kpix.com. we may come and feature your school or camp on the show. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the trial of accused colora theater shooter james holmes been delayed again. it was scheduled to begin in octob. but a new this morning the trial of james holmes has been delayed again. it was scheduled to begin in october but a psychiatrist conducting april sanity exam on holmes has asked for more time for a sanity exam. he is accused of killing 12 and injuring dozens in 2012 in a movie theater. he is pled not guilty by reason of insanity. former p.o.w. sergeant bowe bergdahl is almost finished with his reintegration process after release by militants in afghanistan back in may. a military official tells cnn that he has been going to stores and restaurants in texas as part of his readjustment to normal life. he is expected to be reassigned to a new unit shortly. president obama wraps up a two-day fundraising trip to texas today. cbs' omar villafranca reports the president used a stop in dallas to talk about the crisis involving thousands of children crossing the border from mexico. reporter: president obama met with one of his most vocal critics, republican governor rick perry. the two sat down with state officials and other leaders to try to find common ground on how to handle the massive flood of illegal immigrants caught at the u.s./mexico border. >> it appeared that the president was really interested in hearing what we had to say our ideas. >> reporter: a main concern is the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children who come here from central america. >> we intend to do the right thing by these children. their parents need to know that this is an incredibly dangerous situation. >> reporter: on capitol hill, congress debated the president's request for almost $4 billion in emergency funds. the money would be used for more border agents, housing and care for immigrants, and judges to process and deport them faster. some republicans said that sends the wrong message. >> the number one message to stop this is planes arriving in honduras and guatemala with these children back home. >> reporter: the president called on congress with the help of the texas delegation to pass a supplemental request and then pass comprehensive immigration reform. >> the question is, are we more interested in politics or are we more interested in solving the problem? >> reporter: a vote on the spending measure has not been set. omar villafranca, cbs news, dallas. >> president obama says governor perry is urging him to bypass congress and use executive orders to get things moving. but the president reminded the governor that house speaker john boehner is already suing him for doing just that. well, no fishermen will be cited in connection with that shark attack, you remember that badly injured a man off the southern california coast? fishermen had hooked the 7-foot great white last weekend. it was thrashing around to get free from a line that it was hooked by before it bit a swimmer near manhattan beach. it's illegal to fish for great white sharks, but the state department of fish and wildlife says there is no reason to think that the fishermen intended to hook the shark. a powerful tropical storm is dumping heavy rain on western japan after sweeping through the southern island of okinawa. the one-time typhoon causing floods and mud slides like this one in the area. at least two people were killed. the storm is forecast to travel up the pacific coast to major cities including tokyo. >> the problem now with this is all the rain. it's not the powerful storm. i mean, we're looking at the forecast models, 20 to 28" of rain in the forecast for them. they get more massive flooding like that. around the bay area today we are starting out with a lot of clouds that moved well inland today. looks like it will be slow to burn off so the temperatures will be coming down a few more degrees. out the door we go. we have a little sunshine expected by the afternoon. it should be a very nice day. slightly cooler though in many spots especially in the valleys and then warming up over the weekend as high pressure builds in. but that ridge starting to weaken somewhat over the desert southwest. the breeze is kicking up. that sea breeze right in through the delta this morning going to pick up in the afternoon. and the temperatures are coming down. yesterday it was triple digits into fresno. still hot, 99 there. watch out for some thunderstorms again with this monsoonal moisture over the high sierra nevada. about 89 degrees in sacramento. 101 still hot into redding. all right. we are looking at low clouds and fog this morning. maybe even a little drizzle along the coastline. trying to break up a little bit but hugging the coastline and surging back onshore again tomorrow morning. we'll see less fog toward the weekend. temperature-wise, it's still comfortable and warm in san jose 78 degrees. 76 mountain view. 73 degrees in union city. breezy there by the afternoon. 80s into the warmest valleys, probably the mid-80s on the warm end then inside the bay about 66 in san francisco. about 75 in petaluma. and 61 degrees in bodega bay. next couple of days we are going to start that watch those temperatures warming up as we head in towards saturday and sunday. 90s sunday and next week. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. typical stuff right now going on at the bay bridge toll plaza. if you are heading that way, you shouldn't hit really any major snags. all the approaches still very quiet as well including the eastshore freeway. we can even show you a drive time at 4:48. it is only about 18 or 19 minutes right now on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. and we just called chp right now to get a heads up on this benicia bridge high wind advisory. chp issued a high wind advisory late last night around shortly after 10:00. so southbound and northbound 680. you may still see some windy conditions. they drove that area around 4:00 this morning and say that high wind advisory is in effect for the benicia bridge. if you are crossing near the dublin interchange, this is what it looks like. we can show you a live look. clear in our camera. westbound 580 so far looking quiet from the altamont pass. we are seeing a few delays beginning to build out of tracy and there actually is some sort of traffic hazard there where you see 52 miles per hour approaching grant line. so not sure what it is. maybe a stall. anyway, so there's a few brake lights behind it but again, you can see our sensors just turning to yellow a little bit as you hit vasco. and then things pick up quite a bit as you get closer and closer to the dublin interchange. here's a live look at the golden gate. so far, fairly light traffic. where's all the cars at this time of the morning? that is a check of your latest "kcbs traffic." brian, michelle, back to you guys. as a personal note, many, many, many moons ago when i was a science reporter in san diego, one of the stories i had to do was on a brand-new thing called an electromagnetic rail gun that the navy was developing. and so i came in this morning to see that i was reading this story. which i will now read. the navy is working on a new high-powered weapon that could be a game changer. it's an electromagnetic rail gun that can fire a projectile at 5,000 miles an hour like going from san francisco to san diego in one minute. i think i said that back in the early '90s, too. it's supposed to be much cheaper than conventional missiles. the projectile would cost about $25,000. the military could use it in any number of ways. >> it can shoot down police stick missiles. it can shoot down very advanced cruise missiles. it can shoot down fast-moving aircraft. it is extremely safe and it's extremely effective. >> well, so build it, already! testing is supposed to begin in 2016. the earliest it could be put into service is 2018. >> how many manies was that?
