Kpix 5s anne makovec in the newsroom reports oakland officials want something done even if they have to do it themselves, anne. Reporter the state kill switch bill already passed the senate and its now working its way through the state assembly. But city leaders in oakland are creating a backup plan saying if the state doesnt mandate a kill switch, they will. Kill switch refers to a smartphones ability to be remotely rendered inoperable making it worthless to thieves. This is Surveillance Video of some of the brazen cell phone robberies in San Francisco. Now, newer apple iphones do have a kill switch. Users have to opt in to the feature but its been proving successful. New crime data shows iphone robberies in San Francisco dropped 38 since those phones hit the market. The problem with the current state of affairs is that even if you are not using the Kill Switch Technology on the phone, the thief out there know that more than half of the consumers do not have theirs activated so its a matter of playing the odds. Reporter google and microsoft are expected to incorporate a kill switch into the next version of their operating systems on smartphones. The bill in the California Legislature would mandate those features be automatic instead of optional to phone users. Leaders from throughout Alameda County will be meeting at Oakland City Hall this morning to push for that bill and announce their intentions to passtheir own locally should the bill fail. Sounds like the state bill has support. What are the chances of passing. Reporter pretty good. This is the second timed its gone through the legislature. Looking at whats going on in the schools only 18 of those studying Computer Science are females. According to a nationwide study sponsored by google girls dont have enough exposure to Computer Science but it doesnt mean that theyre not interested. So the industry thinks with encouragement from parents, friends, teachers, role models, mentors, they can change that. Also to attract young women to the field, they have to feel like they are making an impact and it has to be fun. College students who pursue a career in hightech are battling outdated stereotypes, as well. My main problem was the stigma around it, oh, you do a Computer Science you must be antisocial and not talk to anybody. I think thats something that i dont know if it hurts women young girls more than it hurts young boys but it definitely affected me a lot. Reporter and so the made with Code Campaign kicks off in new york city today with appearances by indy rockers icana pop, mindy and Chelsea Clinton will be making remarks. Thank you, kiet. Google released Demographic Data on its employees. That was a wakeup call, right . Reporter google is mostly white men. They know that they have have to change that. State gas prices are also expected to go up significantly next year when a Global Warming law will go into effect. One driver we spoke to is afraid its not just gas that will go it up. The price of food will go up. It costs more money to get the food to the stores, the truckers, everything, everything will go up, all the clothes, pretty much putting a tariff on everything.
