Elizabeth, thank you. New developments this morning in the search for that missing malaysian passenger plane. Australia says two objects spotted in the indian ocean could potentially be connected. Bad weather is causing problems for crews to recover the objects. Reporter australian Prime Minister tony abbott says they are looking into objects found floating off of the coast of australia. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search. Following specialists analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified. Reporter australian officials believe one of the objects is close to 79 feet in size. It is probably the best lead we have right now. But we need to get there, find them, see them, assess them to know whether its really meaningful. Reporter while the lead is promising in the 13day search, authorities are cautious. The malaysian military says it will take time to verify. More than 60 ships and 50 aircraft have been on the hunt for the missing plane covering a search area of nearly 3 million square miles. Malaysian Officials Say crews are continuing to search for the plane in other areas. Some developing news from the north coast where a Mendocino County sheriffs deputy is dead at the hands of a gunman on a twostate crime spree. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran has the story now live in the newsroom. Reporter frank, a Close Knit Community and Law Enforcement group is mourning the loss of one of their own. Mendocino county sheriff was very emotional during wednesdays press conference as he gave the details of what led up to the death of deputy ricky del fiorentino. It started when his killer carjacked a couple in eugene yesterday morning and locked them in the trunk. He drove south got into a shootout in the town of piercy before speeding off and killing the deputy in cleone near fort bragg. Been our. 5 before the suspect Ricardo Chaney killed deputy del fiorentino he ended up at a tourist attraction in piercy. John mills saw him near the restroom. He told chaney to leave but instead the suspect got in his car and grabbed a shotgun. The first shot went off, and i said, oh, f, and i rolled in this way and closed the door and it shut just as he fired hitting that. Then it went out that window over there on some of it. If my aim had been better, there would be another daddy going home tonight. Reporter mills fired back but couldnt stop the suspect. Chaney drove down to fort bragg where deputy del fiorentino confronted him along a dirt road. The suspect fired multiple shots killing the deputy. Other officers responded and another gun battle ensued. Earlier wednesday we thought that the suspect killed himself. After he got in the shootout with officers. But Mendocino County sheriff told a local newspaper it was a Fort Bragg Police officer who killed the suspect. Reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, kpix 5. Deputy del fiorentino grew up in napa. He had been with the Mendocino County mendocino Sheriffs Office for 16 years. Police are looking for an armed man who tied up a 66year old woman in her san mateo home then stole her bank card. Investigators say this is a surveillance photo of the man using the victims atm card. Police say the man was originally burglarizing the home on edinburgh street monday when the woman arrived home and surprised him. This is isolated, not what usually happens in san mateo so this is of great concern to us. The victim was able to break free and call police. She was treated for minor injuries. A wine connoisseur of sorts facing charges now. Napa county Authorities Say a vacaville man stole 400,000 worth of wine. American Canyon Police say jose pena stole 350 cases of the wine undetected because he worked at the wine warehouse. Investigators found more than 73,000 from the sales of that wine at his home. They also found cases of stolen wine in a nearby warehouse. Kentucky senator rand paul fired up a crowd at cal yesterday picking on the intelligence community, he says he is worried and demanded an investigation into domestic spying. We learned that the cia is illegally searching the computers of the Senate Intelligence committee. They are the ones supposed to be overseeing the cia. That worries me. Paul has been one of the biggest critics of the government snooping program. He wants to create a committee to watch the watchers. Only on 5 this morning, the department of agriculture is banning some Bay Area Ranchers from selling thousands of pounds of grassfed beef. Its all connected to the Rancho Feeding Corporation which shut down its petaluma processing plant. That plant is now under criminal investigation because of allegations it actually processed diseased animals. Several beef ranchers had their meat processed there so the usda cannot ensure their products are not contaminated. New this morning, customers of another local Water District are being asked for help to get through the drought. Last night, the contra costa Water District board approved a voluntary reduction in water use. 250,000 customers are being urged to cut water use by 15 . Experts say most customers can accomplish this by reducing the amount of yard watering. The district serves central contra costa county. Looks like another nail in the coffin for san joses classic century theaters on winchester boulevard. According to the business journal, the company that owns santana row has entered a long term lease for the land that the theaters sit on. Speculation is the domed movie houses will be razed to make way for another urban village. Meanwhile, preservationists keep pushing for historic status for the 1960s era theaters. Now, the big question, who can afford the estimated 700 million price tag . Theres only one person in the entire city of san jose who knows the name of that Mystery Company. He is not saying. I cant tell how company x is. But theres a Company Behind the Peery Arrillaga project. Its not a spec building. Its a big company, 2 million square feet of office space, the largest deal in san jose since the internet boom went bust and one of the largest in the history of the city. Reporter the name of the developing is Peery Arrillaga. Topnotch, done campuses for hp and apple and they declined to comment. How about incentives . Did the city get anything in return . Reporter the city had to offer the Company Incentives to bring them here. They gave them tax breaks and breaks on the permits. So it came up to a couple million bucks. The city is hoping to bring in about 7 million per year in property taxes alone which hopefully more than makes up for all the discounts they gave this company. As cbs news Tara Mergener reports, its not clear if these objects have anything to do with the plane. The military search crews are head there is to find out. Reporter satellite images show debris in the southern indian ocean that may be connected to the missing malaysian airliner. This is a lead. It is probably the best lead we have right now. The task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out that they are not related to the search for flight mh370. Theres some developing news from Mendocino County this morning where a sheriffs deputy has been killed. It happened just north of fort bragg in the town of cleone. A man from oregon shot a deputy trying to stop him there. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran has the story now from our newsroom. Reporter investigators will be back at the scene of the last shootout between Law Enforcement and the suspect trying to recreate what happened. It will be difficult for some. Its where ricky del fiorentino was killed. He was a longtime veteran of the Mendocino County Sheriffs Office and was once a coach forefort bragg high school. As the communities mourns his loss, one man we spoke with wishes he could have stopped the suspect before get to to the deputy. It gets worse. As the police chase turned into a manhunt, 48yearold ricky del fiorentino a Mendocino County sheriffs deputy confronted chaney along a dirt road. The suspect opened fire, deputy del fiorentino was killed. Other officers found chaney then opened fire on him wounding him in the leg. The suspect fired 7 rounds at the lieutenant. Reporter john mills told kpix 5 he also took a shot at the suspect. He was standing out here and i just fired once. He kind of made a jerk motion so i thought maybe i hit him but i guess not. Reporter it was thought he committed suicide but Mendocino County county sheriff told a local newspaper it was a Fort Bragg Police officer who killed the suspect. The commander of ukraines navy has been freed after he was held by forces that stormed the navys headquarters. Civilians were among those held for hours yesterday at the facility in sebastopol. Ukraines interim president says the forces were russian and members of the crimean militia. The storming came hours before ukraine announced plans to withdraw troops from crimea which was formally annexed by russia this week. Diplomacy remains the only acceptable means of resolving this situation. We are prepared to impose further costs on russia. The eu will add more sanctions and suspend g8 meetings. The governor wants a 6. 5 cent per barrel fee on all crude oil to pay for disaster cleanup. Happening today, students at city college of San Francisco are standing up against Police Brutality a week after students were beaten and pepper sprayed by campus police. Todays demonstration is a vigil for peace against police violence. This is what happened last week when protestors tried to enter conlin hall here at city college of San Francisco demonstrating against a state appointed trustee and a new tuition policy that requires students to pay up front or on a payment plan. Campus and San Francisco Police Officers used batons and pepper spray to try to keep students from taking over conlin hall. About a dozen students got in and spent the night. Two students were arrested and the school says six Police Officers received minor injuries. So today there is a meeting of the participatory governance council. The chancellor plans to propose a couple of initiatives one to promote peaceful dialogue on campus and another one that would call for an independent review of what happened during those protests last week. Its the first day of spring and you might think about cleaning out your garage or closets but cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger says now is the perfect time for a little financial Spring Cleaning and she is here to tell us what to shred and what to keep. Where do we start . Reporter just came through tax season, you plowed through all those documents. So just remember, because the irs has 7 years to audit you, you actually need to hang on to those tax returns and all of the supporting documents for seven years. Now, the good news, a bunch of cpas are making things easier putting your tax returns on cds ask your tax preparer if thats possible. It cuts down on the filing cabinet bulging. For your taxable brokerage and mutual fund statements, flag a month when a transaction occurs. You may need to access that in the future. Otherwise shred the monthly statements as new ones arrive. Just keep the annual statements around for those seven years. You can keep your pay stubs for a year, match them to your w2, and then go ahead and shred those, as well. All right. For a year. Thats pretty good. What about Bank Statements or credit card bills . Generally speaking, you only need to keep those Bank Statements for one year. But a billing caveat. If you think you a big caveat. If you think you could be applying for medicate, many states require that you show five years worth of Bank Statements. So, you know, maybe tell your folks about that in case theyre wondering. Also, hold on to records that are related to your taxes. Business expenses or home improvements, mortgage payments, keep that as long as you need the items. And for those of you who are keeping your atm deposit and withdrawal slips from three years ago, please stop that. Make sure that the atm transaction is reflected on your Bank Statement then go ahead and get rid of it. And you know, unless you need something on your credit card statement for tax or business purposes or proof of purchase for an item, shred the credit card statements after 45 days. I find those the atm stuff. I find them in my jacket sometimes, my jacket pocket. In your checkbook, youre okay. How about things to keep forever . Reporter well, you know, you have to get either a fireproof safe or you have to put these documents on the cloud or in a safe deposit box. Any way you choose but you have to retain your birth and death certificates. Social security cards. Marriage licenses and your divorce decrees as well as all your estate documents. But behind this sturdy rusted door scrawled with do not enter signs lies the key to learning more about the hayward fault. What it does it goes down and hangs aid right. Reporter its called the lawson adit built and blasted out in the early 1900s by the college of mining. It looks like you would want an old mine shaft to look, damp, dark and covered in cobwebs with one important geographical feature. They realized that the hayward fault was in close relationship to it. Reporter at one point the shaft was 900 feet long. But numerous caveins have shortened it. The lawson adit cuts 200 feet into the side of the cal campus. But we can only go about 15 to 20 feet inside because it simply isnt safe without the proper crews and safety equipment. Thats all changing. Cal will soon cover the brittle shale rock with concrete and install seismic gadgets to combat the bay areas biggest nemesis, earthquakes. We like to put our seismic equipment in very quiet places because that means that were measuring the earths noise. Reporter covered in cars, students and music, the Berkeley Campus is hardly quiet, except inside the adit. Where there isnt even a ripple in the standing water. We liking to close to the hayward fault. The problem is the hayward fault is full of buildings and cars and roads and things. But the lawson adit the old fine is actually fairly excluded so when it starts moving, we can hear the hayward fault doing something. Well see a few more clouds moving through and then mostly sunny by the afternoon temperatures going to be a little bit cooler especially near the coastline then it looks like those temperatures cooling down for the beginning of spring. High pressure beginning to weaken somewhat. You have this low off the coastline helping to spread some of the clouds in our direction. It will still be warm in most parts of the bay area but along the coastline you see that sea breeze that will keep temperatures cooler. Inside the mill part of the state youre looking at 82 degrees in fresno, 77 in sacramento and 65 degrees and partly cloudy skies into the monterey bay. A few clouds across our skies. Overnight tonight well see more low clouds and fog beginning to develop along the coastline. This is one of the better years i have seen in three or four years. I think of the creators have pulled out some imaginative gardens. Reporter i like the waterfalls. People must say, oh, thats not good in this drought year. It is kind of a misconception that people think the waterfalls actually will use a lot of water but in reality, they conserve water. Youre recycling the exact same water back. You can use water harvesting techniques to gather the rainwater every storm and keep it in the reservoir in the bottom of the actual feature and use the same water to water the plants around it. You know, at the same time, its keeping it clean, keeping it fresh. And if you were to plant the same area in even drought resistant plants it would use three to four times the amount of water. Those trees are going to be a weeping willow that you could use in your garden for holidays, event, but for here its kind of highlighting our alien style garden here.
