Kpix 5s Christin Ayers reports a massive brush fire burned for several hours on Kimball Island in the delta. Reporter by evening, chopper 5 showed that the fire on Kimball Island had flared to several acres. Fueled by an overgrowth of tender dry brush burning as hot as it would have during the dry summer months. George watched from across the delta in antioch. Kind of spread bilger and a little bigger and eventually it was all the way down to the end of the island. Reporter three buildings burned and a handful of people on the sparsely populated island had to be evacuated as the fire formed a ring around a smattering of structures. The lack of rain and the unseasonably dry conditions just make the fire conditions just as bad as in the middle of fire season. Reporter the intensity of the fire a direct result of severe Drought Conditions that have caused fire season to wear on months longer than normal. What made matters worse, the location of the fire on an island that you can only reach by water. Nobody even showed up out there for about 2. 5 hours. Reporter thats because firefighters were scrambling to figure out which island was burning and how to get there. Because its inaccessible by land, you cant you cant just drive up to it. Reporter instead, firefighters battled the flames from the water and from the air. Christin ayers, kpix 5. There were no injuries. Officials think it was started by transients. So for a while there was a bigger backup because multiple lanes were blocked. Right now just one and they hope to clear it in about a half hour. They are still waiting for tow crews to arrive and electricians. In the meantime, westbound heading on to the bay bridge no delay at the toll plaza. All your other drive times also in the clear. More than 6,000 customers were in the dark last night after a car slammed into a power pole on East San Antonio street. The outage affected the mclaughlin avenue corridor between story road and sunny court. Palo alto investigators say a deadly house fire on embarcadero road was accidental. They say the fire started in the kitchen friday night likely from a cigarette or a faulty appliance. Two men were killed. Three teenaged boys have committed to sexually assaulting a Saratoga High School student who later hanged herself according to documents obtained by the mercury news. The incident happened at a house party in 2012. 15yearold audrie pott was so humiliated she killed herself. Two of the boys have finished serving 30day sentences. The third is in the middle of a 45day sentence. At least 18 people in the bay area have now died from flu complications. The latest a man in his 40s from solano county.
