But lets start things off with cbs news marlie hall live in new york. Reporter michelle, the first winter storm of the new year is pummeling the northeast with blizzard conditions and cold temperatures bringing many cities to a standstill. Crews in boston are working around the clock building mountains of snow as they try to keep up with the winter storm. The northeast is getting slammed but massachusetts is one of the hardesthit areas. Some spots up to 2 feet of snow. These french tourists picked the wrong time to visit. We like boston but its snowy. Reporter the storm is forcing airlines to cancel flight and planes are grounded at logan airport. Driving conditions arent much better with cars slipping and sliding. New yorks governor shut down the busy long island expressway and in new jersey, even the plow drivers are having problems. Slipping and spinning out. Reporter the snow here in new york is expected to wind down by late morning. But across the region temperatures are plummetting. Subzero temperatures you worry about frostbite and hypothermia. It doesnt take long for symptoms to come on. Reporter thats why officials are warning people who want to get out and enjoy the snow to be careful. Its an extended winter break here in new york city because this morning it was announced that classes were canceled here in the city. How does this storm compare to big ones . It says new york is 10 degrees. How nice is that . Reporter thats right, it is in fact 10 degrees. And with the wind chill, it makes it feel even colder and thats the real significant thing about this storm. Its brutally cold here. In places like boston, massachusetts the windchill factor is less than 0. Were talking minus 25 in some places. Forecasters say thats the coldest we have seen it since 2009. Thats amazing. How are people getting around there in new york . Reporter last night the governor of new york state ordered three major roads to be shut down and they may be reopened this morning around 8 a. M. Our time. However, they say that mass transit is up and running although on a limited basis. But local streets like the ones you see behind me, they are still passible and some people are still out. Theres movement but officials encourage people to stay indoors if they can. All right. Marlie hall live for us in a frigid new york, bundle up, thanks. The effects of the snowstorm pounding the east are being felt right here in the bay area. Kpix 5s keit do is live at the San Francisco airport. Are we seeing any flight delays or cancellations . Reporter we are. That is because jfk is shut down now. They are deicing planes at bostons logan and also experiencing moderate delays at chicago ohare and philadelphia. About 1,000 flights. Here at sfo, thats about 2 dozen flights that are either canceled or delayed coming from those locations at logan, philly, jfk and ohare. But mostly with flights that are arriving from the northeast right now. The only departures that were seeing that are affected are going to philly. Of course, they canceled about 50 flights here at sfo last night. A lot of those people just stayed at the airport, didnt bother getting a hotel, slept here and are now getting on flights. So thats affecting a lot of people who are trying to get on an airplane right now. But the good news is that not a lot of departures are affecting the passengers for now. But well check on see. We talked to some people who spent the night at the airport and well have that coming up in the next half hour but for now, could be a worse here at sfo. Lawrence karnow has the latest on the weather conditions all across the country and here in the bay area. Here he is. Yeah. I think well see a Ripple Effect as people get up and see a lot of problems with the airlines all across the United States. This is the reason why a very serious storm system. One for the record books making its way along the northeast. Subzero from the south subtropical moisture air coming from the south and cold air from the north and pounding areas along the northeast United States. Some of the outer parts of the area are seeing 23 of snow, that in boston, and still more to come. Temperatures of 4 degrees in boston. A seaspray warning along the coastline and freezing temperatures. So cars and anything along the waters edge all frozen this morning. Here in the bay area we have a different story as we have a lot of sunshine coming our way. The temperatures moving up into the 60s High Pressure building in with high clouds in the skies. So far three acres have burned in corte madera and this is area near village Shopping Mall near marshland. The fire was reported around 11 00 last night. This is also the site of several homeless encampments which brought extra hazards for firefighters. There were several propane tanks in the area and at least one exploded. Police had been out to the area to clear part of these encampments out earlier in the day. Its a frequent homeless encampment. Its occluded from view with the marsh grass out there and that keeps it from being visible to the outside. So there are quite a few encampments there. Escorted about 6 people from the area. Reporter firefighters were able to escort them out and had to use special techniques to keep this fire down.
