philippines that has been hammered by natural disaster in recent years, this storm went above and beyond expectations. >> we just need your help. >> reporter: loaded corpses lined the streets and sidewalks, the stench of death is everywhere. in the town of toclovan, 20- foot waves, boats tossed ashore. some survivors are at risk of disease. >> we don't have enough water. even though we are not sure that it is clean and safe, we drink it because we need to survive. >> reporter: thousands are still missing. some areas are inaccessible four days after the storm hit. here in the bay area, donations are slowly coming in. an 89-year-old world war ii veteran tells kpix5, this is the worst he has ever seen. >> so please, donate, help our country. help our country men. >> reporter: joe vazquez kpix 5. defense secretary chuck hagel has ordered the uss george washington to the philippines. they have 5000 sailors and nearly 80 aircraft on board. the u.s. military deployed marines from okinawa. the death toll has surpassed 1700, some officials are saying it could be well over 10,000 people dead. cbs reporter, barnby lowe was in the town of hata has the tine hit. >> just as we finished this report, typhoon haiyan unleashed its full furry with up to 195 winds blowing the rooftops off. debris was flying in all directions. the ocean rose several feet in just a few minutes. huge waves crashed into our o hotel. everyone rushed to the second floor. >> we have been holed up in the hotel room 40 minutes now. we're here. hoping. >> reporter: the rains didn't stop for hours. then, our room caved in. we had to change rooms again. for three hours, we didn't know if we would survive. nothing prepared us for when the storm finally moved on, the devastation was complete. >> and here's the satellite view of the typhoon as it approached the philippines. a monster storm completely covering all the islands there. a storm that size hit the west coast, this would what you would get. incredible storm stretching from seattle all the way down south so san diego. kpix 5 is partnering with the red cross to raise money. we have been at a the -- at the phone banks, thursday until 7:00 p.m. the bay area community is giving, and hopefully everybody calls in and donates, even 5 bucks will make a difference. >> that's this thursday. >> can't wait for that. we don't get typhoons and hurricanes here. if you dip your feet in the water, you'll know why. it's warm out there. today, we have a chance of some showers. our high def doppler radar, we have that cranked up. and haven't been able to do that for a while. we are seeing light showers, and that's when we see rain that dries up before it reaches the surface. you can see off the coastline, we have yellows and orange and maybe some of that moves its way on shore. the best chance of showers mainly north of the golden gate bridge, but some south. you can see the cold front sliding in toward the bay area. not much energy with it by the time it gets here. we'll take anything we can get. could be a little damp early on and then by the afternoon, we start to dry things out and skies begin to part. temperatures out the door, 52 in santa rosa. and 55 in concord. this afternoon, partly cloudy skies sneaking in 70s inland. and we'll keep it mainly in the 60s toward the coast. let's check out your traffic now with elizabeth. we will start you off with a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. there is overnight road work as you make your way toward treasure island. in the meantime, no delays approaching the pay gates, we have not activated the metering lights yet. and toward the golden gate bridge, any slowing we were seeing is gone. it's nice and light. northbound and southbound 101. right around the time the lanes change. crews get more lanes open in the commute direction. all in the clear up and down the nimitz and through the altamont pass and we checked in with our friends at b.a.r.t. and all trains are running on time. in fact, more than 20 all on schedule. that is your traffic. back to you guys. thank you. the alameda county fire department has released helmet cam video giving unique perspective of the dangers inside a burning house. as christin ayers reports, a staircase hindered firefighters efforts in san leandro last week. >> reporter: a gas leak ignited by lamps used for pot grow, a firefighters helmet captured everything. flames were shooting out of three windows when firefighters arrived. they point a hose inside, cooling the fire. as the flames die down, inside it's an entirely different story. the house is built on hill with two floors underground. firefighters descend the steps to an opaque nightmare. this is where things get more dangerous. smoke so thick, the firefighters can hardly see. the stairway acting as a chimney. they unleash more hoses. and knock out windows. when the smoke clears, the home looks to be a loss. but the man who lives here is alive with only minor burns. two of his dogs died in the fire. in san leandro, christin ayers, kpix 5. soot and other particles could linger in the air for a few more days at this recycling plant in redwood city. the fire began sunday and burned into the next day. at one point, pollution in the area was measured at 114 parts per million. more than 3 times the limit. the cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but investigators say it appears a accidental. the newer technology company, sst has a system aimed at protect kids from gunfire at school. it's a new version of the shot spotter system. >> reporter: at first it looks like something out of a sci fi movie, gunshots pinpointed on a map. they gave a demo of outdoor technology adapted for indoor mass shootings. it gives accurate information than terrified callers hiding under a desk talking to 911 dispatchers. >> it's going to be someone over here, and they're going to say shots fired and they're going to say where, i don't know. i'm not sticking my head out. >> it took victims at sandy hook elementary 6 minutes. this system takes a fraction of the time. microphones. >> these are brave individuals and want to have as much information as possible to save lives of others and not put themselves in harm's way. >> reporter: the company is in talks with schools, including oakland school for the arts for bay testing. the system records gunfire and nothing else. but the aclu says microphones could violate privacy. >> the abuses that could occur is a huge concern and the people that suffer the most from the abuse often tend to be people of color. >> reporter: with 17 mass shootings in the past decade, this new technology is a sign of the times. technology that might be good to have, but hope you'd never customers expressed out oarage after -- out raged that it will open at 6:00 a.m. on thanksgiving morning. and the dow jones industrial will begin trading later today at another all time high. the dough -- dow rose 29 points and the biggest smart phone makers are going head to head in a silicone valley courtroom. lawyers there are apple and samsung will -- lawyers for apple and samsung will pick a jury today. the current trial is a battle over older products that are no longer sold in the u.s. in march, there will be another legal battle that will focus on newer products still on the wandering showers further south. a slight chance as we head out the door this morning. looks like temperatures mainly in the 50s. then by the afternoon, the skies begin to part and the temperatures running up in the 60s. even some mid-70s in warmer spots well inland and the weather's going to improve over the next couple of days. we have a cold front off the coastline, working toward the bay area, most of the energy running again with the jet stream just to our north. just a chance of showers this morning. then we start to clear things out. temperatures around the state, 70s in the central valley. a better chance of rain to the north. further north you go. you could see showers in eureka, and ewe kia, and redding. and as we look toward the next couple of days, return to warmer weather. and blustery and cooling things down a tad into the weekend. let's check out your traffic with elizabeth. looks quiet road work wise. not as many lanes blocked. that's the good news for the drinks and bottled water. the dairy industry is rising to the top. the plan is leaving a sour taste. the desired target, kids. in a petition with the fda, the plan would change the definition of what milk is in order to milk sales. >> the dairy industry is interested in selling more product. that's all they're interested in. >> reporter: the change would allow them to add artificial sweeteners to flavored milk without having to clearly say so on the front. a bottle of low calorie chocolate milk would look like a bottle of regular chocolate milk. the only difference. >> the print is so maul. >> reporter: the fine print on the back where the ingredients are listed. that's not how most of us shop. >> the front of the label is what helps consumers make decisions quickly. >> reporter: sonia speaks on the half of dietitians, the largest group of experts. they are urging the fda to deny the petition. the industry says they're not hiding anything. kids hate low call labels and the proposed change will cut down on unwanted calories and fight down on obesity. >> right now, sweetened milk is not a big source of sugars for kids anyway. >> i object to the idea that everything for kids has to be sweet. >> reporter: the profession is an expert in public health and nutrition. she says sweetened milk is a bad idea, that kids need to explore other tastes. >> they don't feel like every single thing they eat has to be sweet. >> reporter: and while the fda says artificial sweeteners are safe, there's uncertainty about the long-term use. >> there's a lack of data. >> reporter: as for these kids, their moms are clear, they don't want any murky milk. >> reporter: anything that has an artificial element should be labeled clearly on the front so parents can know what they're feeding their
