we'll talk about that in a moment. >> thank you. let's begin. back out toward san francisco, southbound 101, the eastbound connector. in the final clearing stages. there was an earlier crash, a fluid spill. had to shut down that connector ramp. told all lanes should be back open momentarily. taking you live outside, here is a look. a crash approaching hop yard. no serious injuries. in the meantime, no big delays in the valley. check in with bart. though it is the veteran's day holiday, bart is on a regular schedule. but it is bart's parking holiday, so you won't have to pay for parking spaces. a live look outside, bay bridge toll plaza, should be a lighter than usual commute. so far that appears to be a case. coming into san francisco bay bridge. the drive time is still only about 13 minutes leaving hayward. that is your latest traffic. this, of course, is veteran's day set aside to honor the men and women who serve in our military. many ceremonies planned for later today. some ceremonies were held over the weekend. kpix 5's john ray most was at yesterday's parade right here san francisco. >> san francisco's veteran's day parade always has an impromptu feel about it. stop traffic on market street until the first motor vehicles begin pulling out. and there's a reason why so many veterans are drawn to this particular form of transportation. >> veterans want to be free after we've done our tour serving our country. and the motor-vehicle is it. that's it. >> reporter: san francisco hasn't always been the most welcoming place for those who have served, especially during the vietnam war. but most here say that's changed. >> really nice. it would have been nice 40 years ago, but you know what? i'll take it any way i can get it. >> the reason i think we're doing a good job is because the vietnam vets it's not happening to these guys. we're going to make sure they get welcomed home. >> reporter: this parade had all the usual stuff, politicians, marching bands, lot of flags. there weren't a whole lot of spectators. no one was here representing the current branches of the military. but david was here, marching in his first parade since that day he landed on utah beach in norm andy when he was only 18 years old. >> a lot of people would say you're a hero. >> i say i'm just doing my job. i think that's all -- we have to do our part somewhere. >> reporter: on this day, the city did its part, expressing gratitude to those who answered the call duty. the feeling here is that the country's duty to help them shouldn't end when the parades are over. in san francisco, john ramos, kpix 5. most government offices will be closed for veteran's day. there will be no regular postal service. the libraries, schools, banks closed as well. most agencies running on different schedules today. operating on their sunday schedule. bart is on a holiday schedule. the bay area's veteran's day parade is today in downtown san jose. there's a chance it could be the last. san jose has held veteran's day parades every year since 1919; but the united veteran's council says it's losing grab money, private funding needed to keep the parade going. a fund raising drive is underway. opening ceremonies begin at 11 this morning at plaza see czar chavez. the parade starts at noon yesterday downtown san jose was the site of the third annual san jose national veteran's day run. there was a half marathon, an 11k, 5k and 1-mile walk. the proceeds go toward scholarships to support education for military families. a lot of businesses offering free services to veterans today. the doctors express urgent care center providing checkups, prescriptions at no cost to veterans. >> i have a lot of family members that have been in the military, a strong connection. my son fought in both wars we're currently involved in as a u.s. marine. we thought, let's do something a little special. this is our business. so we thought let's use the business, give back a little bit. >> military members need to show some proof of past, current service to get those free services. the time 4:41. the battle continues over a law dealing with trance gendered students. the big victory for opponents of the bill. . racial slurs aimed at a teammate. explain his behavior coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,, bridge project. the bridge's new eastern sps still getting its bolts repaired... more than two ms after it opened. and the project cost billions of dos more than expected. wednesday... a committee wi hear about the lessons that be learned.
