until tomorrow morning. a massive wildfire near yoes threatening hundreds of structures shut down highway 120 a gateway to the park. there is good news elsewhere in the state. the american fire in placer county and the sweets fire in butte county up north are nearly full containment right now. hundreds of firefighters are still working on the rim fire near yosemite that forced 200 seniors to evacuate camps run by cities of san francisco and san jose. the fire is 15 square miles big and threatening 2500 buildings and people are getting out. >> it's terrifying how unpredictable it is and how fast it's moving. i don't know what to think anymore really. >> i have 50 years of memorabilia and it's very difficult to choose what to take so mostly pictures. >> so far, two homes and five buildings have burned and the fire has jumped highway 120 as it inches to to grow. the american fire in placer county is even bigger than the rim fire. it's burned more than 15,000 acres in the tahoe national forest not far from the community of foresthill. 62% containment there. and the swedes fire in butte county 90% contained. all evacuation orders in the oroville area have been lifted. a military training exercise sparked a fire in alameda county around 1:30 yesterday afternoon at camp parks in dublin and was contained about 3 hours later. juliette goodrich explains how it all began with a smoke grenade. >> over the dublin grade you could see the smoke. >> reporter: thick smoke filled the tri-valley as a fast-moving fire charred the dry hills of camp parks. it was a close call for neighbors living near the military training grounds like joleen green. did you know it was close to your house? what i heard it was at camp parks my heart started racing because i knew at that point it was too close for comfort more me. >> reporter: residents are used to seeing controlled burns at camp parks but when the fire started moving dangerously close to their homes they knew it was out of control. air and ground support raced to put out the fire that just so happened to be on a red flag warning day. and hours after thousands of dry lightning strikes were seen overnight. but the cause of this fire wasn't from mother nature. it was from a military smoke grenade like this one going off at camp parks. part of normal training exercises that went awry. >> still see some flames, you guys,. >> reporter: while the 170-acre fire stayed within camp park's boundaries, residents are still shaken to learn military training exercises such alarm. in dublin, juliette goodrich, kpix 5. well, lawrence is here now to tell us about more lightning. >> kind of a quiet day yesterday. we had some dry air kind of move into the bay area but we have that low spinning off the coastline so things are going to stay unsettled once again and there's a chance we could see a few more thunderstorms. so be careful outside right now. you can see on our hi-def doppler radar, it's a quite the beginning to the morning. there are no rain returns at all so keeping you quiet early on but that may change throughout the day. we have some patchy fog to speak of near the coastline. temperatures in the 50s now and the 60s. that low continues to spin off the coastline. in fact, it's going to slowly track north over the next 24 hours. red flag warnings continuing in the north bay because of that. 70s and 80s inside the bay, 80s in the valleys. so cooler today. with some 60s at the coastline. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. we are just getting word of emergency repair work down in the south bay in san jose, some connector ramps around the 280- 880 interchange are closed for construction work. so we'll continue to keep you updated there. in the meantime, let's take you outside. the right side of the screen is the commute direction. 14 minutes between hayward and foster city. let's get a check of the east bay now. the nimitz 880 in oakland moving well past the oakland coliseum. there is roadwork that may still be in lanes approaching fifth but otherwise things are typical for this time of the morning. to our maps now and checking some drive too many like i said that 880 commute clear, 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. coming up we'll also get a check of mass transit. in the meantime, back to you. 4:35 now. a man is beaten unconscious at oakland's frank ogawa plaza. the victim telling kpix 5's christin ayers it was a city worker in uniform who was throwing the punches. >> just seems like the wild west out here that the rules of normal society don't apply here. >> reporter: josh daniel didn't used to feel that way about oakland but early sunday morning here in frank ogawa plaza, that all changed. >> without even really thinking i just spitmy gum into a trash bin. >> reporter: he was not expecting to get a reaction least of all from a couple of uniformed public works employees on duty cleaning up the plaza and didn't want him using their trash bin. >> they start just saying basically like saying, you know, you don't belong here, get out of here, we're going to beat your ass and at that point, i reached for my phone and started filming the incident. >> reporter: daniel says one of the men became incensed and attacked. >> comes over and just smacks the phone out of my hand hard and right at that moment grabs my shirt collar with his left hand and starts pounding me with his right hand. >> reporter: the man beat daniels until he blacked out. when he woke up, dan yelled was covered in blood. >> 10 stitches and then some derma bond which is like a super glue stuff under my eye and fracture under the eye. >> reporter: police are investigating but daniels and oakland activists known at city hall for his love of local politics worries this incident has changed him. >> it really is hard to not get cynical here. >> reporter: we were unable to confirm exactly what happened to the public works employees. the mayor has made no comment and the oakland police department will only say they are investigating. in oakland, christin ayers, kpix 5. >> daniels says his cell phone was gone when he woke up so the video he had recorded was lost, as well. a marin county jury took just 8 hours to find joseph naso guilty of killing four women. the women were prostitutes. the first was murdered in 1977 and the last in 1994. naso dumped their bodies in three different counties. the 79-year-old defended himself. he was arrested three years ago after a gruesome stash of photos was found in his reno apartment. the pictures were of partially nude dead or unconscious women. naso also had a list of 10 women and 10 locations. not all the women on the list have been found. the brother of one of the victims spoke yesterday after the verdict. >> jump off a bridge, go kill yourself, just save us some time and money. just finish it. just get it finished. >> naso is eligible for the death penalty. his sentencing phase begins september 4. san francisco is demanding nevada pay for dumping mentally ill patients back here in california. the city attorney says 500 patients have been discharged from a nevada hospital since 2008 and just given one way bus tickets to california. he is threatening to sue unless the city is reimbursed. it costs san francisco a half million dollars to treat and house those patients. around the bay area now on this wednesday, napa county is reporting its first case of the west nile virus for the year. 65-year-old man out of the hospital now has recovered from the west nile virus meningitis. a bird found dead near calistoga tested positive for the virus. a strip club is closing. the lusty lady theater announced on its website yesterday it will clothes in two weeks because it was unable to reach a new lease agreement. the lusty lady has touted itself as the only unionized worker owned strip club in the world. time now is 4:39. a college stay tuned is gunned down in broad helicopters to search. three temperatures are now charged in connection with a shooting death of a college baseball player in oklahoma. as cbs news reporter bigad shaban reports, the motive is summertime boredom. >> reporter: the families of three young suspects in the murder of an oklahoma college baseball player were distraught outside court. two of the teens chansi luna and james edwards, jr., face first-degree murder charges as adults. a third boy michael jones is charged as an accessory. one of the suspects told police they were bored so they decided to kill somebody. >> they witnessed the young man run by on the street, chose him as a target. >> reporter: that target was 22- year-old australian native christopher lane. last friday, he was jogging near his girlfriend's home in duncan, oklahoma, when he was shot in the back in broad daylight. he died on the side of the road. his girlfriend sarah harper says lane helped her discover who she really is. >> most people will go to college and try to find who they are on their own like away from parents and all that. but i found it with chris. >> reporter: a facebook page is set up in lane's memory where strangers posted their condolences. >> he is such an amazing person. going to miss him forever. >> reporter: harper said there was supposed to be a year of planning to decide what she and lane would do next. she says sadly, that now means traveling to australia for her boyfriend's funeral. bigad shaban, cbs news. >> christopher lane was attending east-central university on a baseball scholarship. his team in australia now will hold a memorial game this weekends to raise money to bring back his body. investigators in georgia are trying to figure out how a gunman bypassed security and got into an elementary school campus. authorities say 20-year-old michael brandon hill had several weapons yesterday including an assault rifle. they say hill briefly held one or two staff members captive. about 800 students were safely evacuated from the decatur campus. >> i was in shock. i was scared with fear. i didn't know what was going on. my baby probably went into shock because he is not used to stuff like this. >> investigators say hill fired at police as they swarmed the campus and some officers returned fire but hill eventually surrendered. no one was injured. there's still no word on the motive or connection between hill and the school. that all-time high for the dow from the start of august, nothing but a memory. five straight losing sessions. nasdaq ended yesterday up 24 so good news there. expectations for j.c. penney 2nd quarter was not good but its performance was even worse. the troubled retailer posted a loss of $586 million or 266 a share more than double the loss analysts were expecting. it's the ninth straight quarter j.c. penney sales have gone down. and things are looking much better though for electronic retailer best buy. the company says earnings jumped to $266 million last quarter as compared to just $12 million in the same quarter a year ago. their chief executive for the company says the reason for the boost, aggressive cost-cutting. 34 million americans are expected to hit the road during labor day weekend. we haven't seen numbers like that since the recession began in 2008. trichell a reports this year's travels are expected to be up by more than 4% over last year. the travel group credits an improving economy, increased consumer spending, and the recovering housing market behind the travel boom. also, gas prices are 18 cents lower [ laughter ] we have low clouds and fog around the bay area today moved onshore. there's still a chance we could see some thunderstorms outside so we are watching for that. on our hi-def doppler radar, it's currently clear outside. we don't have any rain right now. but that could change throughout the day. out the door this morning we have cloudy skies near the coastline a few low clouds inside the bay and partly cloudy in some of the interior valleys. this afternoon, there's a slight chance we could see some more thunderstorms outside. you will see 70s and 80s around the bay and 60s at the coast. that area of low pressure weakening somewhat is still spinning off the coastline so there's a chance it could give rise to thunderstorms today and tomorrow as we'll see this system slowly work its way into the north bay so going to keep things unsettled. red flag warnings remaining in effect in the north bay because we could see some of that dry lightning. you have a lot of dry grass out there as well with a possibility of thunderstorms. not a good combination. watching out for that until 3a around the bay area today, we'll see those temperatures a little cooler about 80 degrees still warm in san jose. 88 in morgan hill. about 66 in half moon bay and 75 degrees in hayward. 88 expected in livermore. 90 in brentwood and 78 in vallejo. inside the bay 60s and some 70s. next couple of days, things finally going to settle down as we get into thursday and friday. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. we will take you to the south bay once again to san jose. so once again they are doing that emergency roadwork. this is the area near that interchange northbound 280. it's the connector ramps to northbound 880 and southbound highway 17. it's emergency roadwork, we just got the alert around 4:15 this morning. so we called chp they said an accident last night caused a damage to some sand barrels in the area so they have to do road repair up there now. they say the connector ramps will be closed until 7 a.m. so it could cause a bit of a delay. otherwise your travel times in the south bay so far clear on 101, 280 through downtown and the guadalupe parkway. eight minutes or so between 85 and 101. so coming through the altamont pass looks good maybe a few brake lights through livermore. 15 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. and mass transit nothing to no. bart has 14 trains and they are systemwide on time. good news. that's traffic. back to you guys. santa clara 49ers stadium project is now more than halfway done. the 2016 super bowl we know that's already a lock and as kiet do explains the stadium is now in the running to host another big-time event. >> reporter: could it be that arguably the mother of all sporting spectacles is coming to the bay area? at pro wrestling revolution the train center of san jose, the thought of wrestling mania coming to northern california makes him want to body slam. >> it's like super bowl. it's the world series. it's the nba championship. it's the big daddy the show that everyone wants to be part of. >> reporter: the most recent wrestle mania was at metlife stadium. levi stadium is a finalist for the 2015 event competing with philadelphia. santa clara mayor jamie matthews is flying back east next week to meet with wwe. >> it's not too blue collar for the bay area? >> no. we're a very blue collar town. it wasn't long ago that we were picking fruit off the trees in the orchards. >> reporter: a former pro wrestler says if they come it will be a big morale boost for local talent. >> it's not about torture. it's about inspiration. it's about your heart. because this business is not for everybody. >> reporter: training center founder gabriel ramirez says wwe would relish being the first big event there before the super bowl. >> if they have that opportunity to one-up the nfl, they will do it. >> reporter: so bay area wrestling could see a resurgence. just grab an ice pack and aspirin. oh!! [ chanting ] >> it's a fight to save the city college of san francisco. >> the show that everyone wants to be part of. >> the new 49ers stadium in santa clara could be the next home to wrestle mania. >> everyone is very confident that this work is going to be getting done. >> we're one week away from the bay bridge closure. crews scramble to make sure it will open up on time. from across the bay to around the world, the stories that matter on "kpix 5 news this morning. >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald >> not many people fall victim to hidden ball trick. >> good morning, it's wednesday, august 21. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:00 on this wednesday. let's kick it off with a little weather. lawrence? >> a little quiet so far this morning but that could change. still a chance of some thunderstorms in the forecast for today. red flag warnings up in the north bay. our kpix 5 hi-def doppler radar showing things are quiet right now just some fog out toward the coastline. but no thunderstorms early on this morning. but again, that could change. temperature-wise a little cooler this morning. 50s and low 60s well inland. and then you can see that low spinning off the coastline. until that moves out we have unsettled weather through tomorrow morning. 80s and 90s inland, 70s and 80s around the bay, 60s at the coast. more on the weather in a moment. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thank you, lawrence. caltrans has issued a traffic alert in san jose. some emergency road repair an accident caused some damage to the sand barrels and now several connector ramps are closed. northbound 280 the connector ramps to northbound 880 and southbound highway 17 closed until about 7:00 this morning. so next couple of hours for the morning drive expect some slight delays. overall right now though the main lines of the freeway not impacted and no delay on 101, 280 or the guadalupe parkway. and taking you outside now here's a live look near the dublin interchange, headlights the commute direction coming into pleasanton the drive time from the altamont pass still under 20
