here's a live look towards the dublin interchange. westbound 580 that drive time is still about 15 minutes or so coming out of the altamont pass and heading out towards 680 so let's go to our maps. we have an incident, a large truck car carrier one of the cars fell off. now it's blocking that connector ramp to get to the antioch bridge. it's right there in antioch westbound 4 to northbound 160. it sounds like they are hopefully going to reopen the ramp. they are working to clear it. they are waiting for tow crews now. so we'll continue to watch it. in the meantime, the main lines of 4 if you are heading towards bay point that's still in the green this morning. we are seeing a lot of green traffic sensors despite overnight roadwork. eastbound 84 heading out of menlo park that's where you'll still find roadwork in lanes until 6:00 this morning. that seems to be the magic hour this morning when a lot of overnight roadwork will be picked up. approaching the waldo tunnel towards the golden gate bridge, so far everything looks good across the deck heading towards san francisco. cupertino ramp closure northbound 280 to southbound 85. back to you guys. the cruise from hell is finally over. carnival cruise lines is now working overtime to fix its public relations nightmare. the company estimates the repair plus the cancellation of other cruises over the next three months would reduce company's earnings by at least 8 cents a share. cbs reporter ines ferre with the passengers who are grateful to be back on dry land. >> reporter: passengers celebrated as the ship was towed into port. for many, buses were waiting to carry them to louisiana and texas but the thought of a 7 hour bus drive couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of being back on land. passengers with family he cried as the charges were read in court today. the double amputee known as the blade runner was charged with murder at magistrates court. earlier he was seen leaving jail with a jacket over his head. in a statement a short time ago, oscar pistorius disputed, quote, in the strongest terms that he killed his girlfriend. reeva steenkamp was found shot to death at athlete's home yesterday. five people are in the hospital this morning after a police chase through the streets of san francisco. it ended with a stolen vehicle hitting three other cars downtown. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in san francisco this morning with an update. >> reporter: it got wild. of course the streets are quiet now, but imagine this all going down at around 10 p.m. here's a look at the scene just a few hours ago. it all started at about quarter after 9:00 last night when someone reported a black town car stolen. that is when police spotted it at market and 8th. a few minutes after that met up with other police cars on the 300 block of eddy street. the police put down some spike strips to try to stop that stolen car. and the car instead drove on to the sidewalk to avoid the spike strip so an officer started shooting at the car. it continued on and ended up here at fifth and mission, hit a taxicab. two other vehicles were hit by the stolen car and cab and ended up with the suspect and four other people injured. luckily they are all going to be okay. none of those injuries are life- threatening and the officer that fired those shots back on eddy street is now on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. right now live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. the search continues this morning in san leandro for a man who police say assaulted an officer and then escaped. the suspect is identified as solomon espinoza out of union city last seen running along the bank of the san lorenzo creek in the area of lewelling boulevard. police initially attempted to make a routine traffic stop. he allegedly got out of his car and took off. an officer caught up with him and tried to make an arrest. he allegedly tried to grab that officer's gun. then the suspect's girlfriend came out of a motel room and distracted the officer. that's when espinoza got away. a santa clara man accused of making a death threat against state senator leland yee will be arraigned today in superior court and this morning, bomb experts continue to search basham's home. they say they found guns and explosive materials inside the house and yesterday they found some explosive devices. >> unlike the substance they found earlier in this investigation, which were incomplete, they were in the process of being completed and finished, these actual items were complete and they were ready to use. >> a police bomb unit from neighboring san jose carefully removed the devices and drove them to a separate location to be detonated. they were transported in a trailer specifically designed to withstand an explosion. the state senator who received the threat which prompted basham's arrest and the search of basham's home tuesday leland yee says basham sent an email expressing anger about a gun control bill he authored. >> when you start reading the email, it really outlines step by step as to how they were going to stalk you, how they were going to then put a gun on their sight and at you and then "friday light." usually we see some changing color on our sensors some speeds below 40 miles per hour but it's not the case towards the dublin interchange. this is one incident we are seeing in our chp reports right now. the connector ramp towards the antioch bridge is shut down. there's a stalled out big rig westbound 4 to northbound 160. they are working to clear it now but we just called chp and they are still closing that connector ramp. in the meantime, westbound 4 through antioch looks okay into concord. a lot of green traffic sensors meaning that everything is pretty much moving at the limit this morning. southbound 101 if you are heading towards candlestick looks good down along the peninsula. an early-morning morning flight at sfo, the san bruno ride is fine. 280 is fine all the way through san mateo county. now, in the south bay that ramp remains closed in cupertino northbound 280 to southbound highway 85. caltrans says that should be picked up by about 6:00 this morning. mass transit we have another map for that, bart so far running all 36 trains on time. we just checked in with them, as well. that is a check of traffic. for more on your weather forecast, temperatures there running into the upper 50s in spots. and we have some chilly temperatures in the valleys and a couple of patches of fog, 30s and 40s there. by the afternoon skies clear all the way to the coastline. upper 60s even at the beaches. you will find the same inside the bay. and even some 70s in some of the interior valleys. high pressure in control the ridge sitting over head with the offshore winds. that down slope and sinking air helping to warm the temperatures up as it compresses, numbers up as we approach the coastline. plenty of sunshine today and some warmer than average temperatures continuing to the weekend. as we head toward next week big changes maybe rain too. 70s in the central valley for today. lots of sunshine there about 68 in the monterey bay gorgeous around the bay looking good too. 73 in san jose. 68 san mateo. 70 hayward. east bay temperatures in the 60s and 70s. and inside the bay we go. lots of sunshine, 60s and 70s there. about 69 degrees in san francisco. 69 in petaluma. and 70 degrees in santa rosa. next couple of days, we will see the temperatures begin to cool off just slightly for saturday. on sunday, a few more clouds roll in, the ex-los angeles police officer linked to four murders in southern california. the identification was made owe -- the identification was made official yesterday with the help of dental records. he was cornered in a cabin in big bear tuesday. an ex-girlfriend said the killing spree was inexcusable. >> i don't think it's justifiable killing someone because you're stressed out at work. chris bottled up his emotions and wasn't very good at expressing himself. >> the cause of death is not determined yet. irvine police told the "orange county register" that dorner did research on a woman and her fiance prior to killing them. a confirmation vote on defense secretary nomination chuck hagel is stalled as a result of a republican filibuster. the senate was two votes short of the 60 needed to move hagel's nomination forward. republicans say they are seeking a delay to look more closely at hagel, the republican ex-senator. others say they want more information from the white house about the attack the on the u.s. consulate in libya. one of the senate's longest running members won't seek re- election. new jersey democrat frank lautenberg announced yesterday he will retire at the end of 10-ton meteor blasting across the sky faster than the speed of sound and it's all caught on tape as you can see. it happened in russia in the chelyabinsk region 900 miles east of moscow in the ural mountains and kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the nasa ames center in mountain view. >> cate, the timing is interesting because it comes just as an asteroid is headed toward early this morning. >> yes. and we're learning that that's just mainly a coincidence. we found that out this morning. you mentioned frank the russian academy of science is saying that meteor that streaked over the mountains was about 10 tons. hundreds of people are recovering from that meteor shock wave. the fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. and it caught most people off guard. >> an object the size of a house cannot be seen by telescopes and they catch you off guard. >> reporter: this comes on the same day an asteroid known as 2012da-14 is headed towards evident. this heavily body will make the closest fly by of an object its size and we are learning that european scientists say the meteor and the asteroid are not related but researchers say this asteroid is also not expected to make an impact on earth. however, it will fly closer than some television satellites but you will barely be able to see the asteroid with your eye. now, here's a little space trivia to get an idea of the difference. a space rock is an asteroid when it's orbiting the sun. it becomes a meteor when it enters earth's atmosphere and if it hits the ground it becomes a meteorite. live at nasa ames research center, cate caugiran, kpix 5. bill nye the science guy compared the event to a similar one that happened in siberia in 1908 when a meteor caused a destructive air burst. >> this is where the meteor, the asteroid, the cometary material is coming into the earth's atmosphere so fast that the earth's atmosphere act like concrete. it disintegrates in midair, an air burst, the pressure wave, the shock wave from that knocked out windows and i guess hurt people. >> to get more on the science angle there's a viewing part tonight at the chabot space and science center in oakland and they will have telescopes to see this asteroid and scientists and astronomers will be on hand to talk about it. the viewing party starts at 7 p.m. what a way to spend a friday night. >> the meteor expected to come through that blew up over russia was running at about 33 miles per hour. that's the estimate. >> what's so strange is we never see them on tape on video. so someone got a camera out. >> everybody has cameras now, cell phones. a lot of that stuff we get to see. that's the ones that we don't see those are the scary ones, right? those are approaching the country. around the bay area today, we are looking at a lot of sunshine coming our way as temperatures heat up nicely again 30s in the valleys now patchy fog in the north bay, but 50s elsewhere with the offshore winds already blowing. so you get the idea, it is going to be a gorgeous day ahead as this ridge builds overhead. that offshore winds are going to kick in. and this is going to be some kind of day weather-wise. temperatures in the low to mid- 60s in the afternoon could see some 70s about 73 degrees in san jose. 69 in san francisco. and 70 degrees in santa rosa. will it hold for the weekend? we will talk about that coming up in of slowing minor slowing in the main lines of highway 4 through antioch. silicon valley commute no delay on westbound 237. southbound 880 is moving fine. mass transit all reporting no delay. bart should have about 40 trains all running on time. and a quick look outside. san mateo bridge traffic at the limit if you are heading out in the commute direction towards the high-rise. that would be chase through the streets of san francisco ends with a stolen town car slamming into three other cars. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is here in the city where five people are in the hospital this morning and she has the latest on that. >> reporter: big car accident, car driving up on the sidewalk and shots fired. it was wild. it all started around 9:15. here's a look at the scene once it all ended. it started at market and 8th when police spotted a black town car that they believed was stolen so they followed it to the 300 block of eddy street, set down some spike strips trying to stop the stolen car but the car drove on the sidewalk and that's when a police officer started firing his gun at it. here's police chief greg suhr. >> when the vehicle went up on the curb, one of the officers fearing for his safety fired two shots at the vehicle. we don't know that either of the shots hit the driver at all. the driver does have a scratch on his forehead. but it's hard to tell whether or not that's from the crash or whatever. but in any case, there is no serious injury. >> reporter: so after the shooting, the car continued on and then it hit a taxicab here at fifth and mission. then those two vehicles hit two others. the suspect and four other people were hurt. that's a total of five people who were hurt. and the officer that did that the shiuing is now on paid administrative leave -- and the officer that did that shooting is now on paid administrative leave. the intersection is open. anne makovec, kpix 5. antioch police are investigating an accident at hidden glen drive. a female child was hit. the driver is cooperating. police don't think alcohol or speed played a roll in the accident. a manhunt in san leandro for a man who police say assaulted an officer during an arrest attempt last night. police are looking for this man, solomon espinoza of union city. he was last seen running along the banks of the san lorenzo creek in the area of lewelling boulevard. it all started when officers tried to make a routine traffic stop. espinoza allegedly got out of his car and ran off. an officer caught up to him and during the struggle police say espinoza the nasdaq closed up one. billionaire warren buffett is teaming up with 3-g capital a brazilian backed private equity company to buy heinz for more than $23 billion. catch-up is the most famous -- ketchup is the most famous of the heinz 57 varieties. the deal is expected to expand the 144-year-old company into a global powerhouse. heinz shares were up 20% on the news. the ketchup company also makes classico spaghetti sauce, potatoes and smart ones frozen meals. i had to will pay $29 million to 30 states and american samoa to settle a safety lawsuit filed by attorneys general. the lawsuit was related to allegations that toyota concealed defects in its vehicles that led to unintended acceleration. toyota has also agreed to provide information to its customers in a more timely fashion. the coastline. those offshore winds are blowing. and by the afternoon, they clear out your skies and we're talking 70s again in the warmest spots inland, upper 60s inside the bay and upper 60s at the coast. what a day it's going to be. this is probably the peak of the heat. then i think that ridge begins to slide a little further to the east over the weekend. so the temperatures may cool slightly on saturday. still going to be very nice and then i think we'll see more significant cooling as we head in toward sunday but today plenty of sunshine and these temperatures running above average all around the bay area. sfo of course on a day like today we are not expecting any delays. nice clear skies there. temperatures heading to the upper 60s by the afternoon. houston you have some partly cloudy skies an 63 degrees. denver checking in with showers at 41. and 52 degrees some showers into new york. we are looking at a gorgeous afternoon. plenty of sunshine inside the bay today. 73 degrees the expected high in san jose. 69 in palo alto. east bay temperatures running into the upper 60s and the low 70s. and a great day to grab that sack lunch and head out for sunshine. 70 in santa rosa, 69 alameda, 69 in san francisco. next couple of days including that beautiful weekend looking good lots of sunshine coming our way. i think saturday probably the nicest of the two then we'll start to cool down with a few more clouds on sunday. next week much cooler weather is on the way. in fact, looks like we could see showers toward tuesday. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. >> you can definitely tell it's friday on the roads a lot of areas seeing light traffic including coming through the altamont pass. not too bad right now coming from 205 towards the dublin interchange. the drive time still in the green at 5:49 this morning up to 22 minutes between altamont pass and 680. elsewhere, some areas of over knit roadwork have not quite been picked up yet but -- overnight roadwork have not quite yet been picked up but they should be. caltrans says 6:00 is the time when all the lanes will be reopened and meantime across the deck, as you can see, it is looking good heading towards the pay gates and doyle drive into san francisco. more overnight roadwork the westbound lanes of the dumbarton bridge picked up around 5:00. eastbound out of menlo park, approaching the dumbarton bridge, again that roadwork should still be in lanes. but they are working to clear it now. in the meantime, no major delays maybe a little bit of slowing approaching the pay gates on westbound 84 towards the toll plaza. elsewhere, more ramp closures and this is in antioch. they have still not cleared this because of that stalled out big rig a car carrier westbound 4 to northbound 160 the ramp remains block. we continue to check in with chp but again they are taking while to clear that one. in the meantime, westbound 4 now a little in this morning's healthwatch, alcohol is being blamed for causing approximately 20,000 cancer deaths in the u.s. each year. researchers at boston university say breast cancer was the most common type of cancer death in women related to alcohol. cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus were the most common types in men and even an average. just 1 1/2 drinks a day -- even an average of just 1 1/2 drinks a day accounted for 30% of all deaths. there are signs that public bans on smoking cut down on the number of babies born prematurely. researchers in belgium look at a series of smoking bans there. first in most public places then in restaurants and finally in bars. they found that after each phase of the ban, the pre-term birth rate went down. a pre-term delivery is when a baby is born before 37 weeks. an 11-year-old girl is getting national attention after getting banned from playing in a football league because she's a girl. she has been playing at a philadelphia catholic youth league for five years now and the archdiocese recently stepped in and started enforcing the boys-only rule. >> really mad that we don't get the same opportunities as boys just because we're girls. >> in recent weeks, the story has been featured on national television shows prompting an outpouring of public support for that girl. some surprising news for one of our cool schools. >> a family may in russia this morning where a 10- ton meteor streaked across the sky. chunks of meteor crashed to earth causing some panic and injuring more than 500 people. pilot yor rights landed near a -- meteorites landed near a mountain rage near a famous nuclear weapons site. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the nasa ames center in mountain view with more on a meteor and asteroid flying towards earth. >> reporter: good morning. they both -- both incidents happen on the same day an asteroid, 150 feet, is headed towards earth. it's known as 2012da14. researchers hope that this asteroid can help them learn to avoid collisions with larger ones that could destroy earth. but don't worry, nasa says this asteroid will move past us and not impact earth. now, this morning, though, 500 people
