Our pet expert dr. Jill chase is here with answers. Its another warm day around the bay area. But we have a big change that you need to know about. Thats straight ahead as news continues right here on kpix 5. Starting today minimum wage workers in San Francisco will bring home a bigger paycheck. Its now 12. 25 an hour. Thats up from 11. 05. It matches the city of oakland which has the highest minimum wage in the nation. Votes for a higher minimum wages are planned in the next couple of months in emeryville and berkeley. And its no secret the bay area has some of the highest housing costs in the country. Now Many Americans are forking out a big chunk of their income on rents. A nonprofit found one in four renters spent half the Family Income on housing and utilities. Experts say there two reasons. Income failed to match rent increases. Firefighters came across the 12 pound raptor on a sidewalk outside a san ramon fire station in march. She kept crashing into windows as she tried to fly. Veterinarians found she had severe head trauma and was nearly blind in one eye. The eagle has now recovered and just in the last halfhour was released at las trampas regional park. Every friday we take your questions about your pets and ask our veterinarian dr. Jill chase. Today we are talking cats, specifically inappropriate urination. So they have a litter box. But they doesnt want to use it. They are going someplace else. Why . Thats a really good question. For me, number one is usually urinary tract infection. The cats are actually communicating with the owner letting them know im not happy for whatever reason and the very first thing that i think and otherrer should do is make sure the urine is checked by the veterinarian doing a urinalysis and culture. A lot of times a culture is not done but it should be done especially in this kind of case. So a cat would know they are sending a message . Sometimes. Last well talk about behavioral problems but we rule out medical problems first. What people should also know is that some cats and dogs actually produce crystals when from the food that they eat and those crystals are very irritating to the lining of the bladder. And it makes them feel like they need to pee more and sets them up for infection. So doing the urinalysis allows us to see whether there are concentrated crystals in the urine, and infection and doing culture. I have a cat scoop that if you use especially the dusty stuff she doesnt like it. Thats a good point. A lot of times owners will pick the ones that are environmentally friendly but the cat doesnt want it or they smil like pine but the cat doesnt like the smell. I prefer cat litters that are like beach sand. I like ever clean unscented because the cats think its like beach sand and they enjoy it. How about enough in there . If you just kind of dust the bottom of it they like a little two or three inches deep at least . True. The size of the box is really important. And if you have a multicat household you need to consider how many litter boxes that is. How many cats are using it. I believe and i might have this wrong but i believe that a rule of thumb is that for every cat that you have, there should be at least one extra litter box. I mean, i personally with one cat in the house one litter box is good but yeah. Dr. Jill, thank you. We invite all you pet lovers send us your questions about their health and wellbeing.
