Kpix 5s keit do reports, south bay shelters will use every inch of floor space to help keep people warm. Reporter the coldest night of the season is upon us and sam martinez a longtime resident of the baccardo center has a message. Get into the shelters. Reporter the largest shelter is gearing up to add an extra 100 sleeping beds. The fire marshal has approved it to 350 beds, never that high before. So some people will have to sleep out in the hallway out in the open. Every available floor space including classrooms will be used if needed. I do sense that the community is much more aware of Homeless People. Homeless people have often complained of being invisible or throwaway people. People are coming to understand theres no throwaway people. Reporter the jungle a homeless encampment was shut down this month. Whats more, the sunnyvale armory another large homeless shelter also shut down this year. All this could add up to record numbers at the baccardo center. The head count is rising sharply. It was 221 monday night and 274 last night. If another weather emergency occurs, well probably coordinate again with the county and work again with the fire marshal to have our capacity expanded. Reporter as a stark reminder of the hard life on the streets, there is a memorial to the 1100 Homeless People who have died in Santa Clara County since 1999. Get off the street. You know . The high wind advisory has expired but its breezy. 14mileanhour winds in San Francisco, 15 in pleasanton, currently the winds are blowing to 16 Miles Per Hour in vallejo slightly lower in the napa area. A breezy afternoon. With the advisory expired, we are looking ahead to the freeze warning that goes into effect tonight at midnight. The blue highlighted areas in effect across the bay area. So just how low will it go . Were talking about 20s throughout the trivalley. 20s in santa rosa, as well. It will be freezing in san jose. Trees all around the bay area have been no match against the high winds. About 40 trees and limbs came down yesterday in the potrero hill neighborhood of San Francisco. This morning another tree fell this time on a karnow one was hurt. Two trees fell in burlingame the first one last night on El Camino Real and strong winds brought the second one down this morning. Part of that one fell on a house causing minor damage. Power was out in the area and some neighbors heard the whole thing. Saw the tree come down. It was crazy. El camino real was closed in both directions until 11 a. M. Pg e crews have been working to restore power to nearly 10,000 bay area residents who lost power this morning. Right now, about 3500 are still in the dark. San francisco and the peninsula have 1500 people without power. In the south bay, crews are restoring power to 1300 customers. And much of the west will be ringing in the new year tonight with freezing temperatures, snow and a lot of wind. Wintry conditions are causing accidents on a number of california roads overnight. Fire crews in San Bernardino county using snowcats rescued drivers on highway 138. More than 100 drivers stranded in a foot of snow. Also heavy backups on the road out to las vegas. Making me nervous. My friend, i told him im going to drive. Because these people cant drive out here and i have seen almost like 10 accidents. They are not used to it. They have sand ready in case of snow on the strip. Parts of arizona could see a foot of snow by tomorrow. Meanwhile, two people were killed during a storm on Santa Catalina island in southern california. One was a Harbor Patrol officer there. He was crushed between a boat and a rock. L. A. Authorities say high winds caused several boats to break loose. Those strong winds may have inadvertently caused a fire that destroyed an apartment in san jose. It happened last night at a complex on seven trees boulevard. The man living in that apartment went outside to cut a tree brought down by the wind. Thats when his Christmas Tree in the unit caught fire possibly by candles that were left burning. Power was out in the whole neighborhood. He had candles lit in the apartment and a fire in the fireplace, and he had animals running free in the apartment. So its possible that one of the animals knocked a candle over or Something Like that. But we dont know at this point what the cause of the fire was. Three people were displaced and one was treated for smoke inhalation. Seven bodies have been recovered from the java sea where airasia flight 8501 crashed. As Craig Boswell reports, crews now are battling high winds and heavy seas while searching for the victims. Reporter the bodies of the passenger and crew of the airasia are arriving in numbered coffins at the same airport where flight 8501 took off. Family members of the 162 people on board are giving detailed descriptions of the loved ones and blood samples for dna matching in hopes of speeding up the identification process. High winds and rough seas are hampering the search for more victims. Currents are moving debris and bodies 30 miles in one day. The wreckage found so far suggests the plane hit the water relatively intact which means the pilots may have had time to react to whatever was going wrong. The jetliner was on its way from indonesia to singapore when it went down after pilots complained of bad weather. Investigators hope to learn more when search crews can locate the planes voice and data recorders. The recorders can give investigators information about the planes altitude, air speed and Engine Performance as well as recording of the pilots last words, all critical information in determining what went wrong. We could see all the way to the farralons. San francisco currently 52 degrees. San jose in the 40s. Low 50s in concord. Santa rosa at 53. These numbers are chilly for this time of the year. Factor in a northeast wind at 16 in oakland, 14 redwood city, 14 San Francisco, we have a bit of a chill in the air. Were talking wind chills that makes it feel like its in the lower 40s if you are stepping on out for an afternoon walk. Sfo, no reports of any airport delays. Winds this afternoon are lightening up diminishing gradually. Tonight the temperatures are going to fall off very rapidly with the sunset and then overnight below freezing temperatures. We still have some gusty winds, however, even though the sustained winds will begin to diminish. 19 in the city of San Francisco by 7 p. M. Tonight. 29 in throughout the santa cruz mountains. After midnight, these winds still gusting up to about 20 Miles Per Hour throughout many of our neighborhoods. Now, meanwhile, we do have that area of low pressure that dry cold front that skimmed through the bay area yesterday. It it was dry for us but it continues to produce some scattered showers throughout the southland even some snow in the big bear area. And now making snow as it heads on out towards las vegas and arizona. But look at this. This is most notable. That is an indication of that cold arctic air mass thats just plummeting into the bay area as well as in the greater lake tahoe area where the high today will barely top off at 25 degrees bottoming out in the teens. Sun goes down at 5 01 and with it the numbers plummet into the 20s. But meanwhile todays highs only 40s and 50s. 28 degrees in livermore tonight overnight. 29 in santa rosa.
