Mark has more on the latenight email that puts tremendous pressure on some oakland officials. Mark, take it away. Reporter indeed, frank. We did not see this coming. It was a stunning set of events here at the meeting of the Oakland Alameda county meeting this morning. The deal to keep the as coliseum open for 10 years is approved. The Oakland City Council initially directed the members on the board to vote against the deal, saying the as should pay more. Last night, the a ascoowner sent an email to Council Members and others saying if this deal was not approved, me had the okay from Major League Baseball to immediately take the as to another city on either a temporary or permanent basis. The Oakland Council president this morning called mlbs number two official and had the leagues position confirmed. The league would, in fact, allow the as to leave if this deal was not approved. Youre first going to hear from the Oakland Councilman larry reid about why he switched his vote from a no to yes and a coliseum board chairman, nate miley. And rob clearly made it clear to us that the failure of approving the lease agreement, that answered the twoyear lease extension that we voted on, that they will allow the as to temporarily relocate out of the city of oakland as well as to find a permanent home outside of the city with oakland. Some people might perceive you were strongarmed by lou wolf or mlb. Do you feel strongarmd . No, not at all. Had we had the economics of the deal not worked out, i think that would i would consider that being strongarmed and if we didnt have a clause dealing with the possible stadium deal, land deal, i think that would make me feel strongarmed. Reporter now, according to the outside lawyer who was hired to negotiate the deal for the coliseum authority, the deal would bring twice as much financial benefits to the community the next 10 years compared to the past 10 years. The as do have some out. They would be required to pay all of the rent and they could leave if the raiders decide to build a new stadium on the same site. The next step in the process has to go both to the Oakland City Council and to the Alameda County board of supervisors. Both of those group his to ratify the decision here today and that is the next step and both groups plan to get on this quickly in a matter of weeks and hopefully before the end of the month before they get this finalized, frank. And sounds like the email from the as owner changed the tone of the debate. Did they have a choice . It did change the debate. It was discussed by several members of the commission this morning, this particular e mail, and whether they had a choice or not, i dont think there is an answer to that. I think the key turning point here was when the Oakland Council president called Major League Baseball and said, yes, what lou wolf is saying is true. We will agree to let the as leave immediately. When they heard it from mlb, it changed the tone of debate. And good news, mark is life for us in oakland. Thank you, mark. And in time for a giants game and the Holiday Weekend.
