Im at the smart dealership in San Francisco where two of the damaged cars have been taken. This is what an in tact smart car looks like. Its very small. And apparently, very easy to tip. One smart car was flipped on to its roof. Another on to its side just a few blocks away. And this smart car was flipped on to its tail in the nearby neighborhood. A neighbor says he saw eight hooded figures on the street at 1 00 a. M. I thought they looked like they were up to no good. And sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here, all huddle around it. And then just lift it up and set it on its back. Reporter the cars weigh only 1800pounds making them an easy target for tipping. I think theyre a lightning rod for criticism. And obviously bad intentions. Reporter andrew smith owns this car which now appears to be totaled. He and his wife only had it for six months. In that period of time, we found a lot of people have negative feelings about them. Reporter theres a Facebook Page dedicated to the idea of tipping over smart cars. One member saying theres environmental friendlily and theres just plain stupid which these cars are. It goes on to say the person would never damage someones property but mentally its fun to picture them on their sides. End quote. I want to say i feel violated but i dont care. Having lived in San Francisco for as long as i have. Ive come to expect random act of violence and mayhem. Reporter police dont know the motive in these cases. Theres some speculation that this could be a backlash against the San Francisco neighborhoods but it might also be a stupid prank. A developing story in san jose where investigators are looking for the source of an over night fire the flames were spotted at a landscaping business at 3 30 on old bay shore highway. Heres a look at damage done to the building. Investigators havent ruled out arson. At this point, theres nothing to indicate the fire was intentionally set. Any time theres a fire in the middle of the night. It peaks our interest. And concerns us. Especially in an industrial neighborhood. But the fact that there were people inside, that tends to be, you know, there maybe a more legitimate and viable cause for that. There were employees on site at the time of the fire but no one was injured. A petaluma slaughter house involved in a recall is back in business today. Reporter some beeps of support for activists. Their signs and costumes as clear as day their feelings towards meat eaters. They deserve the right to live. We dont need meat to live. Reporter this slaughter house doesnt need to reopen its doors but this morning the beef plant did that. This time under new management, a new name, and a new trendy marketing campaign, sustainability. The new buzz words for farmers like this is humanely raised. But theres no humane slaughter. Theres no humane murder. Reporter the old slaughter house went out of business following federal charges the plant was processing sick animals. Possibly for as long as a year. Even alleges the usda sneaking the diseased animals in behind the backs of inspectors. We were really excited to get this slaughter house out of our neighborhood. Reporter shes been monitoring the slaughter house for years and doesnt expect much change under the new regimement for her, this is the same old murder factory with a new name. Were showing people this is what it is in there. Its a blood bath. Its violent. And theyre killing living beings. A year from now, as wendy mentioned, i hope i will be representing my country in the foreign service. Hes an american citizen now. But he was born in afghanistan. His mother was killed in a tragic fire when he was a baby. And his grandmother took him in. As the soviets were leaving and the civil war was breaking out, they escaped. First to pakistan and then to the united states. As a teenager, he told us how much his grandmother meant to him. What she has done for me,ly , i will never be able to repair her. She got me out of the situation i was in. Shes taken care of me. And carried me in her arms since my mom died. If i work for the rest of my life, theres no way i can repay her for what shes done for me. She basically saved my life. That was him getting one of his College Acceptance letters. But what happened him through college was sra. Students rising above. Then there are my sra advisors. Bob and lawrence. They have been like mothers to me. Like mothers, so important to students who rise above. Most of whom do not have parents in the home. When he was chosen, there were only ten other students in his class. This year, there are 100. Almost all the first in their families to go to college. All of them low income. And you are here because of your character. They will have the support they need from sra not just to go to college but to graduate. And as he points out, to graduate with a purpose. It stresses the importance of service and giving back.
