This morning. Chopper five is over what is left. The investigation into what happened is just beginning. Kpix 5 reporter is on the scene. Firefighters believe the building could collapse at any moment. Reporter yeah it is looking very unstable. The fire is continuing to burn in some spots in that building. The flames grew in a matter of minutes after the fire was reported just before 5 00 last night. Today we are learning that construction workers had been using a welding torch on one of the buildings upper floors in the hours before that fire broke out. The investigation into the exact cause continues. This was a horrific fire. Reporter mayor ed lee says he watched it all on live tv last night. When i saw the embers jump a block away and saw nobody on the roof but flames, i said we have to take care of that. Reporter the manager of the ucsf building put it out himself as half of the citys firefighters about 150 worked to contain the original fire and the burning debris it spewed. What is left today the shell of a building that was supposed to house 180 new condos here at mission bay. Its likely to collapse. Im not a Structural Engineer but given the amount of fire damage and water being applied, it weakened the structure. Reporter so today streets remain closed, apartments evacuated until heavy equipment can come in and tear the rest of the building down. Many of the walls fell last night. Luckily inward, not toward the street. At this point in its construction, the building was largely a wooden frame which is highly flammable. No sprinklers or smoke detectors had been installed which raises questions about the dozen or so other construction projects. But the mayor says the citys response proves one thing. I think it builds confidence we are ready. Reporter and mayor lee also mentioned the installation years ago of a High Pressure water system here. He said that made things much easier for them. Again you are taking a look at the live pictures of the water that is continuing to be sprayed here. Two firefighters were injured during this fire fight. They are okay. One has facial and hands burns. Live in San Francisco mission bay kpix 5. Another problem the wind. There are concerns about falling debris and blowing ash in the area. Lauren has the very latest on the conditions out there and he is joining us live from livermore. Lauren. Reporter yeah. Weve had winds this morning. 3045 miles an hour around the bay area. It started subsiding a little bit. But you can see now we have nice, clear wind swept skies. Still looking at winds around 15 miles an hour. Throughout the afternoon that breeze will continue to blow. Maybe not as strong as it was this morning. But yo will but you will still see some breezy conditions. Now of course we have seen High Pressure sitting overhead. Those offshore winds continue to crank thinks up. As we head into the evening house things begin to calm down and it looks like things will subside. We will have more on your weather in a few minutes. Thanks. Now a little background on the building. The mission bay 360 project is a 227 Million Development between at t park where the giants play and ucsf mission bay. It was supposed to be a mix of hundreds of apartments and retail space down below. They broke ground on the project a little less than a year ago and it was slated to open up sometime in the late spring. Kpix 5 reporter kit continues our story. Reporter those 30 evacuees live in the units that face the fire on this side of the building and they are pretty much out of luck. They are not allowed to go back into their homes but everyone else is. However since they dont have working sprinklers does so at their own risk. For the 30 residents of the stratta apartments the units that directly face the fire it was not looking good. The intense heat either cracked or broke their widows. And the fire sprinklers gushed all night. We were right there for the intense moments as he checked on his seventh floor unit. Hot in there. But nothing is cracked. Reporter oh my gosh that is incredible. He has double pain windows and only one cracked. That is crazy looking. Yeah this was pretty intense. This window here double pain. Reporter he was in the shower when the fire started and his dog started barking. He said the flames moved very quickly. As soon as i saw the flames, i looked out the window and took a quick peckture on my phone picture on my phone and grabbed my dog and computer and out the door. Reporter but not before shooting this short video on his phone. Firefighters have been in and out of the building all morning checking on water damage and chasing down smoke alarms. Residents rushed in to check on their unit. This man came back to get his cat that was hiding underneath the bed. If from the ground it looks like the burned structure is buckling inward and not toward the apartments. But just in case the evacuees have been told to stay out indefinitely. Who or what do you think for not this being worse for you . Luck. I dont know. Yeah just luck. Reporter no one is staying in the shelters and people are either staying with friends or family or they have renters insurance which givings them hotel room. That makes sense when you consider the rent here is about 4500 a month for two bedroom apartment. Wow. Thats a lot of money. Thanks, kit. And stay with us for continuing coverage on air and online. You can find a lot more video of the fire at kpix. Com. Sleeping in my bed and then something blew up and the bed started shaking and the floor. I thought the world was coming to an end.
