Thank you for joining us on this friday. Lets get right over to lawrence with more on this typhoon hitting the philippines. When this typhoon moved onshore, one of the strongest on record. Sustained winds of 195 miles per hour, gusting to 235. It has weakened somewhat right now, but still a very, very dangerous storm. Lets take a closer look. You you can see as its beginning to make its way on land, it moved across the island there, causing massive destruction there. It is now just beginning to move out in the open waters once again. Sustained winds have weakened. Still an extremely powerful category 4 tropical cyclone, 190 mileperhour gusts. The track is going to take it toward vietnam, possibly making landfall by saturday night as an extremely powerful category 4 typhoon. Looks like that will quickly begin to weaken somewhat. Tremendous amounts of damage will be done there and of course tremendous amounts of damage already in the philippines. Cbs reports. Reporter typhoon haiyan unleashed 20foot high waves and 200 mileperhourplus winds. It forced more than a Million People across the philippines out of their home. Forecasters say the massive typhoon, also known as a hurricane in the western hemisphere, measures some 300 miles wide and may be the most powerful storm to ever hit land. Philippine officials are blaming haiyan for many deaths and say the storm has put some 12 Million People at risk. [ Foreign Language ] reporter this man says i saw those big waves and i immediately told my neighbors to flee. We thought it was a tsunami. The supertyphoons roaring winds and downpours knocked out power and telephone service, flooding and landslides burying villages. Rescue workers carried children to safety and distributed supplies in the central philippines, including tourist resorts home to world famous beaches. A show of support for a local teenager, set on fire while he was on a bus. Police believe it may have been a hate crime because the teen was wearing a skirt at the time. It is a big show of support from this Little High School in berkeley. They have been planning it since mondays attack. I feel like its really important for us to come together in support of sasha. Reporter in this case, support means wearing a skirt. 18yearold luke fleishman, also known as sasha, was set on fire as he rode an ac transit bus on monday. He was wearing a skirt at the time and asleep when another passenger lit the skirt on fire. Sasha is in the hospital with Second Degree burns. Its hard to make sense of. Reporter so today, many of the students and teachers at this school of only about 100 are wearing skirts. Whether you knew sasha or not, its important for the whole school. I think thats what makes may beck unique, that support. Reporter police are charging the suspect in the case, 16yearold richard thomas, with assault with a deadly weapon, and hate crime enhancement because they believe sashas skirt triggered the attack. Sashas mom says he identifies as neither male or female. The word at high school, sasha is supported no matter what. We cant wait to get you back in our community here. Sacred heart Community Service has been helping low income families for nearly 50 years. They will provide 4000 families with holiday food boxes and give over 16,000 new toys to kids.
