This is a fivehour look at weather history, the past five hours and the plume of tropical moisture hasnt moved. You just saw the live pictures from san jose. Its pouring there and in oakland and San Francisco and walnut creek and sacramento and santa rosa. It is pouring everywhere, has been pouring and will be pouring for the next four or five hours. More rain is falling right now in san jose every 15 minutes than we saw for the entire month of january earlier this year. Sunnyvale rain. Stanford rain. Concord, benicia, hercules, richard, everybody with the yellow color the steady soaking rainfall. The city of San Francisco down to san bruno, san mateo, it is coming down still tonight and will continue to at least until midnight. Rain totals a half foot of rain in saint helena and santa rosa. This is now i said this three times in two weeks, this is the wettest day of the year. We keep upping it. This is the wettest day of the year by far and it will continue to rain for the next six hours. Havent talked about the wind yet. We have had one of our windiest days in several years. Ill have that in about 10 minutes. One of the main routes into muir woods has been washed out. The southbound lanes of highway 1 from muir beach to the park got swamped. Were checking to see how badly it is damaged. Apparently, it could be a while before it is fixed. Early estimates say not until march of next year. Were seeing storm damage just about everywhere tonight. Kpix 5s da lin shows us what happened to some drivers who thought they could make it through flooded streets in the east bay. Reporter a onetwo punch in the east bay. Heavy rains and gusty winds knocked out power, flooded streets and blew down trees. Its getting deeper. Reporter the family hunkered down in their home in richmond hoping to avoid the mess but the rain flooded their garage with about four inches of water. We have all been wanting the rains, i guess maybe just not necessarily in this one big chunk. Reporter the relentless rain damaged some homes but flooded even more roadways. Three drivers who ignored warnings drove into this large pool of standing water on ashby avenue in berkeley. Water stalled their engines trapping the cars in about three feet of water. All three drivers were rescued. Theres a lot of standing water on the freeways. And thats pretty dangerous. Um, but i been lucky to avoid most of it. Reporter with the ground saturated, we found plenty of downed trees including this one in richmond. Some branches were hanging on a power line. In pinole, this eucalyptus fell on eastbound interstate 80 this morning, forcing officers to shut down all eastbound lanes for a period of time. It was no fun being out in the elements but driving in it was even worse. The wipers couldnt keep up with the rain causing dangerous driving conditions. Too much raining, too much raining. Reporter too much raining, huh . Too much raining, no seeing the road. When you get the drivers on the other lanes splashing towards you youre blinded for 2, 3 seconds. Reporter caltrans hopes to reopen this part of ashby avenue in berkeley sometime this evening. They are pumping out the water so they can remove the three cars that are stuck inside. Two cars are submerged. You can barely see the roof of that third car. In berkeley, im da lin, kpix 5. School drivers were faced with the full drivers were faced with the full force of Mother Nature today. Getting up this hill in daly city was nearly impossible. Rushing water so strong, it pushed that van backwards. It barely avoided hitting that parked car. Well, a santa cruz student got trapped underneath a massive tree after it came crashing down on a school playground. Students were lined up for class when that tree toppled over. Firefighters rushed to free the sixth grader at gateway school. Crews were able to out can away the branches, pull him out and rush him to the hospital. He had no broken bones, just some bruises. The school says the trees are checked and trimmed each summer. Kpix 5s len ramirez is checking other damage in the south bay including another huge tree that came crashing down. Lenny . Reporter thats right. Trees all over the south bay have been coming down today. You know, this is the most steady downpour that i can ever remember covering news in san jose. Its been steady since 9 a. M. But it was a combination of wind and rain that took down that true in santa clara this morning. Now, that tree has been a neighborhood fixture. A gust of wind came down, the saturated ground, it toppled the tree, it it crushed an suv and damaged a portion of a house. That wasnt the only damage in the south bay. This is something you dont see all the time in storms in san jose. A manhole cover actually being pushed up by all of the water. The water pressure from all of the storm systems started to backflow and caused a flood on santa clara street and they had to close santa clara street near the s. A. P. Center as a result. Now, all the water flows downhill to alviso. Alviso actually sits below sea level. And the massive electric pumps that they have installed over the years to stop it from flooding just couldnt keep up with all the downpour. So there was massive street flooding in alviso today. Its raining now. We are looking at the Guadalupe River which has been rising all day but the Flood Control measures are keeping the river in check. Live in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. Pg e reports it is making progress getting the power back on tonight. At the height of the storm about 100,000 customers were in the dark. At last count all but about 17,000 have had their power restored. More than 10,000 of those with no electricity are in San Francisco and the peninsula. 2500 in the north bay, 2700 in the south bay and 1,000 east bay customers are waiting for the power to come back on. Some San Francisco neighborhoods were in the dark for much of the morning. The traffic lights were out along van ness avenue forcing parking control officers into the street to keep traffic moving. As you can imagine, hundreds of flights have been canceled out of sfo many of them the short haul flights up and down the west coast. At last check, 245 flights have been canceled from sfo. Delays are starting at an hour or even longer. Things are not as bad at Mineta San Jose International airport. Only four Flights Canceled there today and no cancellations at oakland. Bart service is operating normally this evening after stormrelated problems closed two stations this morning. Flooding forced bart to close the san bruno station for about two hours. Water covered the station floor sending work crews out with mops and buckets to clean up the mess. The water also flooded the tracks inside the station. A loss of electricity forced the montgomery station in downtown San Francisco to close until early this afternoon. The power went out at 7 30 this morning and wasnt back on until 1 00 this afternoon. Many schools had to be closed today and for tomorrow, so far only novato schools are closed on friday. We are continuing to check in with the other School Districts tonight. Go to kpix. Cars were able to drive through the water but very slowly. The waters along a stretch of highway one on the peninsula made it impassable. Crews worked to clean up what look like a small lake just west of interstate 280 near pacifica. The road went under water after those storm drains backed up. The Russian River is under a flood warning. The river is expected to crest over the banks early tomorrow morning a few feet above flood stage. People are nervously watching the water levels. Reporter yeah, veronica. Same thing, people were nervous here and take a look behind me. You can see that napa river is well, its right up on its banks. It was projected to flood today. But they got a reprieve. This is wine country where they have been starving for rain. The projection was that the napa river would flood. Read the sign carefully. You can see they definitely dont want you to drown here. But this afternoon, a major change. The National Weather service pared back its projections and now looks like the napa river will stay inside its banks within a few inches, no flood here. My boyfriend lives right here. And his backyard is the river is running right up to his house. So its pretty intense if you live right into the floodplain. But this is nothing. Reporter otherwise no. No, we were prepared for this immense storm of the century. Reporter there you go, you get what you get, right . So theres some low level flooding out here but for the most part its going to stay within its banks. These folks out here have dodged a bullet. In daly city, a river of water rushed down a boulevard almost looking Strong Enough to move the parked cars that were alongside of the road. There they are. The viewer tells us that he were about to leave for work and school but decided they would stay home when they saw that outside. Raging waters park in san jose had too much water. A creek that runs right by that waterpark is flooding. So is the park itself. A layer of muddy water sitting underneath the pavilion here. Some people didnt take cover in the rain and said they took advantage of it. This, believe it or not, is lake tahoe. And the fire hose is not moving. Just a plume of tropical moisture sitting right over the heart of the state of california. And under that, we find rainfall rates about. 25 per hour. We have a live picture take you back up to saint helena now where the rainfall is steady. You saw bettys live shot in san jose. Thats about 90 to 100 miles of real estate, everywhere in between is dealing with the same thing. A steady soaking rainfall that will not go away. Now, joe is along the napa river. The Russian River will likely crest above flood stage minor flooding expected around 11 a. M. , 2. 3 feet above flood stage. The beach has been rough surf and it will be through tomorrow morning. That big pacific storm causing dangerous surf. You combine the waves and surf together, 15 to 20foot seas. We had a big storm. We had the wind. We had heavy rainfall. But the storm is moving parallel to this plume of tropical moisture kind of stretching things out but not moving it out of the way. So its sitting over top of us. It has been for the past six hours. Likely will be for the next six hours until this moves out. The heavy rainfall will stay. The steady soaking rainfall is going to be with us likely until midnight. It will move east. We will see unstable air tomorrow and scattered showers but nothing like what we had today. And if you want a break, youre going to get one over the weekend. Weak High Pressure saturday and sunday mainly dry. The next several hours and days, rain tapers off to showers but not until after midnight. Five or more hours to go. Many showers will be around on friday but it wont be that heavy and the weekend will be mainly dry. Well slowly dry out after this significant storm. The extended forecast sunny on saturday, dry and partly sunny and sunday. Guess what happens next week. Rain. Going to rain again. We may receive another inch of rainfall on monday and tuesday. So Mother Nature is making up for lost time. No rain for three years and now in one twoweek period, we have had some areas about a foot and a half of rainfall. I think ken has overdone the rain dancing. Yeah. Over did it. No more dancing. I blame ken. This is exactly what we need in california. It is. And were right on the edge of it being, you know, kind of almost to the dangerous level where we are starting to get a little flooding and stuff like that, but with a couple of days now of things calming down, and the weekend, you say saturday and sunday probably no precipitation, then starting up thats kind of good. When it drops down a little bit more rain on top of that. If we could do something similar to this not to this magnitude every week all winter long, we might almost be near the end of the drought. Call a cab and the common complaints include long waits or drivers who dont show up. They are never on time. They dont show up. Uber is a refreshing change. Reporter Rideshare Services like uber and lyft generally show up when you need them, but on a rainy day or a holiday, surge pricing costs. You its worth it if you get there on time. Reporter both uber and lyft increase fares when the demand increases. For instance the exact same uber route that cost 17 wednesday cost 35 on thursday in the rain. And the screen shot on twitter shows surge pricing peaked at nearly 4 times the normal fare. Im sure the storm affected drive time but i can tell you there are places in the city Like Union Square where its actually quicker to stand in line to get a cab at one of the hotels than t
