Len ramirez continues our coverage now from palo alto, where they are keeping a close eye on san fransesquito creek. Reporter folks around here remember what happened during a big storm in december of 2012. And they doesnt want a repeat of the flooding that hit East Palo Alto hard so today, a small army of california conservation Corps Members spent the day sandbagging the banks of the san fransesquito creek next to University Avenue where floodwaters jumped the banks last time. The banks on the east side of the creek are lower than the palo alto side. The city of East Palo Alto is raising the elevation to match the bank on the palo alto side. We saw flooding here in december 2012 and it came out right at this spot so what they are trying to do is keep the water in the channel so it goes farther downstream to the bay. Reporter the sandbag wall raises the elevation on the East Palo Alto side by two feet. The creek is dry but it only takes a couple of hours of heavy rain to put it into a flash flood condition. Now, in addition to the sandbags, the creek authority has also installed new monitors on the creek itself electronic monitors that will tell it how fast the creek is rising and how much water volume there is. Len ramirez. One of the biggest impacts, dozens of schools are closing. They dont want to chance kids coming to school. Some of the major districts include oakland and San Francisco unified. Reporter the superintendent who used to work in colorado, by the way, says that they are going to err on the side of safety. There are people who dont call school out when theres tons of snow on the ground. [ laughter ] thats right. Usually in colorado, we called it out because of the cold not because of the snow. These days here in berkeley, the police are feeling like they are stuck in the middle between the protestors and the politics of policing. Heres the story. When the latest round of berkeley demonstrations erupted police reacted with force and tear gas and they were soundly criticized by their own city council for doing it. You know, were Police Shooting tear gas at protestors using clubs. Reporter the next night, police backed down and violent fringe protestors trashed the downtown. Well, i mean, i kind of think that there should be more of a Police Presence on sunday. Thats not to say i think tear gas should have been used. Reporter on the businesses and people who suffered . It was unacceptable but i do think what happened on saturday definitely inflamed the situation. Reporter as the former head of the California Police chiefs association, san mateo chief Susan Manheimer says as much as politicians would like, you cant always have it both ways. I heard the on the radio a demonstrator say by any means necessary well get our message across. Reporter its not a debate with chp. They have made hundreds of arrest and have no problems using force. Emeryville stores hit hard by looters being told to hold off on fixing windows. This is from the 7eleven last night. The two employees hid as people bashed in the glass doors and stormed the store. People can be seen jumping the counter to grab cigarettes and other items. The store was one of several that were hit last night. A couple of blocks away vandals smashed the window at a hair salon also hit were a pack and save, cvs and bank of america. Business owners say the looters are drowning out the message and the cause people are marching for. Simply the immature wanton destruction of property. It has nothing to do with justice. Youre hurting us. Youre not helping us. They owe us an apology. The the windows will cost 1,000 to fix. Police are telling businesses not to get them fixed however because of the potential for protests in the coming days. Still ahead, trying to stay ahead of this big storm. Get outside do some coloring with your kids. Be creative tomorrow, mom and dad, because the power may go out where you are and many kids will be home from school. Well go to the peak wind gusts. Im going to update this throughout the night. How strong are the winds now . This is still 10, 12, 14 hours away from peak winds but already calaveras road 40mile perhour wind gusts. Point reyes 39 Miles Per Hour. Los gatos mount tam over 30 Miles Per Hour. Oakland and sfo 28 Miles Per Hour. None of those numbers are a big deal but it just shows that the wind is beginning to increase. Theres the rainfall primarily north of the golden gate although some of you in oakland and berkeley have reported some showers. Theres the rain in sonoma, napa. Yountville, novato some rain. Santa rosa some rainfall. Vallejo, American Canyon also seeing some rainfall. It will be a lot of rain tomorrow. The soil is still saturated from last week. The flash flooding will be a concern. Thats why were all under a Flash Flood Watch and we have a high wind warning in effect. This is the bigger concern to me. Because trees are drought stressed. We will see winds much stronger than last week. Widespread wind gusts 45 to 55 Miles Per Hour. Up to 80 Miles Per Hour in the hills. So wind damage is likely and a lot of trees will likely lose the battle with Mother Nature tomorrow. Theres a big storm up here which is kind account of parent low but thats not the one thats going to cause the winds to increase. Its this guy right here and its moving rapidly in our direction and its strengthening rapidly and the stronger it gets, the stronger the winds will get. Well have very strong winds tomorrow morning as the front moves through. 8 a. M. , ill tell you this right now, if you work in the city, get to work like an hour or tw early. The rain gets here at 10 or 11. So the morning commute San Francisco and south might not be horrible but it will be in the north bay. Theres the rain and heavy winds at 11 00 pushing into the south bay by 2 p. M. There will be a lot of rain throughout the day but it will be concentrated in that narrow band. Look how much rain will drop 8 in ukiah. Tomorrow evening, after that front moves through, the wind is gone we are left with just rain friday a few showers, dry over the weekend, and the top of next week more rain moves in. Sometimes we get that pineapple express, it rains for two or three days. Thats not whats happening. Its a concentrated front like we get in other parts of the country but with that front, serious rainfall and serious winds moving from north to south. The punch. Its going to be. Pretty strong punch. Our bar is low for storms. This is a pretty big one for us. All of kens rain dancing. No more dancing, ken. Stop it. No dancing allowed. Thank you, paul. Talk to you in a few minutes.
