A vacation cut short for thousands of passengers on board a cruise ship all because of fears that a passenger was exposed to ebola. Thats right. A passenger on board the Carnival Cruise ship worked at the dallas hospital where an ebola patient died. She may have handled his specimens she does not have any symptoms, but she is in isolation with her husband out of precaution. That cruise has been cut short. Meanwhile, president obama appointed an ebola czar today to oversee the governments response to ebola. Ron klain was a former chief of staff to joe biden. His appointment has drawn criticism because he has no medical or healthcare background. Meanwhile the drugmaker of an experimental treatment for ebola has received authorization from the fda to begin testing on patients with the virus. The antiviral medicine was given to the first u. S. Elizabeth cook joins us now to explain. Reporter well, it will take a monumental effort to stop ebola in its tracks. But scientists here are working on a new way to detect it before it can spread. This is actually an area that were currently working on in my laboratory. Reporter dr. Charles chiu is an expert in Infectious Diseases at ucsf and is analyzing samples from ebola patients. The goal is eventually to use this information if we can to establish and make available a rapid diagnostic test for diagnosis of ebola. Reporter he says infected patients die from loss of fluid and blood. What happens is the virus replicates in the blood and invades the endothelium cells. The loss of fluid is stunning even to the experts. Reporter patients can lose 20 to 40 cups in a single day. And while at the beginning of an infection theres not a lot of virus in the body, that changes as the disease progresses. Right before the patients die, less than a quarter teaspoon of their blood can contain more than 10 billion copies of the virus. What this tells me is that in the later stages of the disease, the virus is incredibly infectious. Reporter suggesting that as we saw with the two nurses in texas it doesnt take much to become infected yourself. Well, there are three vaccines in the works all getting fast tracked instead of taking 10 years. If one of these vaccines works, it could be available in about a year lets hope so. Yeah. Not soon enough. Liz, thank you. 25 years ago tonight the bay area was reeling from the loma prieta earthquake.
