As coowner lew wolff emailed oakland city leaders yesterday urging them to approve the contract. Sources tell us lew wolff doesnt plan to give the city any more money than whats on the table. The city of newark making a case as to why a 30yearold business should be closed down. They say the motel not just the place to stay but a hotbed for crime. Kpix 5s Ann Notarangelo with the case against the ez 8. Reporter allen, the Planning Commission is meeting now on the 6th floor. Also an attorney for the ez 8 motel is making a case why the motel should stay open. We met a family who is making its case. We have been here three weeks. We havent seen anything bad here. Reporter this ez 8 motel room is home for ian mccormacks family and they are happy here. I just seen families. I havent witnessed anything else. Right now he wants to go play with the kids in 214. Reporter but the city of newark paints another picture of this 30yearold motel. Its hoping tonight the Planning Commission decides its time to close it. Every one of these is an arrest. Reporter between 2009 and 2012 there were 760 arrests and 2400 emergency calls. This one location makes up 17 of the Police Departments calls for service. Theres been robberies, rapes, child abductions, kidnappings, drug use. Over the past we have had a number of issues over there and frankly we reached the point where enough is enough. Reporter this graph comparing arrests at ez 8 to other motels and hotels shows there is nothing comparable in the city. But the attorney for ez 8 says thats because their clients cooperate with police raids. Cooperation at the ez 8 with the Newark Police department results in criminals to the extent they choose to house themselves here being apprehended. Reporter she showed us an agreement signed this week with the city that includes existing and additional security measures and says the statistics are being unfairly skewed. Those crimes do not happen here for the most part. The majority of them are arrests on warrants for crimes that were committed elsewhere. Reporter last year, she says, they had roughly one arrest for every 1,000 guests. And arrests are down 73 since 2010. One way to discourage the shady characters would be to raise the room rate which is the lowest in the city. But that would push ians family into a shelter. We stay in these hotels because we cant afford to get out of the hotel. We cant afford to move into a place. Reporter Planning Commission has a number of options. It can vote to shut it down or keep it open. But theres a sense that what the Planning Commission will do is let the motel stay open while it implements the security measures. The flames raged yesterday afternoon but cooler temperatures and higher humidity have helped the fight today. It is 30 contained now. The 3800acre fire has forced 200 homes to be evacuated. In fact, the winds have died down now but just about half hour ago it was real shifting winds and directly behind me, that hill was on fire. Well, now fortunately crews have been able to knock down the hot spots. Homeowners nearby were rolling the dice deciding whether or not to get out. From the ground look at that. Reporter to the air, fighting the butts fire has been tough to tackle. Hundreds of people evacuated, except ron. He isnt leaving. Its like a war zone out here. Reporter he says he is staying put. That way it came right down to the houses. Reporter but you decided to stay . Thats it. Decided to stay. Reporter wendy has been checking the hillside hour by hour all day, all night. Very unnerving when you consider our house is just on the other side of the hill. It is very frightening. Reporter just as fast as firefighters knock out one spot fire, another flares up. And the shifting winds make the butt fire seemingly untameable at times. Access to hot spots can be treacherous by ground. We learned that firsthand. This rancher taking us up a private access road to get a closer look. Behind me is ground zero where the fire started. You can see essentially by those solar panels. It quickly moved north and then over the ridge and then jumped over roadways. This smoke and charred filled canyon parched by drought conditions, were looking at what could be a summerlong firefight throughout the state. About a half hour to mama had to go in first and she didnt want to leave the baby. Safe and sound now. Reporter so as it stands now, this fire is 30 contained. Well be here all night long monitoring the firelines. Right now four structures and one home burned. And there are hundreds of homes right now that are threatened. But there are evacuation sites set up, one of them at middletown high school. As for the newborn foal it doesnt have a name yet and the owners are thinking about naming it lucky. Brian, the weather really has made such a big difference because yesterday, it was really hot and dry out there and you really saw the fire spread quickly. Yeah. And today obviously they have a lot to deal with but the good news is that we have a big layer of low clouds along the shoreline in the upper atmosphere kind of cool mass of air low pressure trough and while its not cool out there, it certainly is a lot cooler than it could be. The satellite map you can see a large swatch of low clouds out there. Do we have the live mobile weather van shot . The temperature out there was in the 80s a little earlier today. Winds were variable but generally light from like 3 to 6 miles an hour. So both of those factors are good news. Temperatures lowered today, winds lowered, as well. Cross your fingers, it stays that way. It should for at least the next 48 hours. Thats going to help the firefighters. Thank you. California will get federal money to help in fighting the fire in napa county. Fema will reimburse up to 75 of the cost. Again this fire is burning just west of Lake Berryessa the pope valley fire. 3800 acres have burned. This fire is 30 contained. And more than 200 homes have been evacuated. They have set up evacuation shelters at the pope valley school, also the middletown high school. Covered california has been riddled with problems since its rollout last year. Kpix 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts reveals why covered california may not even realize what needs to be fixed. Reporter we tracked and categorized hundreds of local complaints about the Insurance Exchange so we have a pretty good idea of what needs to be fixed but weve learned the agency itself isnt actually tracking complaints. Welcome to covered california we are your Health Insurance marketplace. Reporter with an undertaking as large as insuring 1. 4 million californians, problems were to be expected and are expected to be fixed. Covered california is committed to make Consumer Experience better. Reporter but in spite of the promises we have learned covered california isnt tracking what the consumer is experiencing. In response to a recent public records request, the agency said it has no records of complaints regarding website or Customer Service problems, delays in coverage, loss applications, or any other complaints pertaining to the exchange. And as we have been reporting, there have been a few. If you like your doctor or your Healthcare Plan you can keep them. Reporter first there were the broken promises. Now, covered california says while it may not track complaints, it does, quote, evaluate every input it receives from consumers. Wow. On a personal level, i call it uncovered california because of the nightmare we had. But what does what does the agency say they are doing to fix these problems . Reporter whether or not they are tracking, there are some things they are doing with or without complaints. Staff reports so that more than half of all calls to covered californias hotline got a busy signal or were abandoned. So they are adding more reps and automated options. As for too few doctors the agency recently reported to the board is asking insurers to selfreport and you may be surprised to hear that insurers say there is no problem getting an appointment. Thats after a Mountain Lion on the hunt was spotted in peoples backyards. Kpix 5s don ford on the family who saw and heard what happened. Reporter it was around night in this quiet san mateo neighborhood from the creek area just below his backyard deck tim weber heard the noise. Was walking by a young fawn, i didnt know at the time what it was. Since i was such a deep sleep, a fawn screaming. Reporter grabbing flashlights, he and his son went down into the trees to help. What they found was more than they bargained for. No more than 15, 20 fed away from us this cat just steps up off a dead little fawn and darts up the hill. Reporter a Mountain Lion just steps from his house with a fresh kill. Cole took me down to where the last lion was seen. He is still spooked. Never seen a big cougar Mountain Lion before ever, ever. Reporter there are lots of deer and fawns, lots of Mountain Lion food and not just animals. Kids that come down here and play and stuff like me or the kid i just walked down here with my little bb gun and shoot cans and stuff. Reporter now theres a new hunt they are in town, next door neighbors dont seem to mind. They are more scared of people i think than people are of them. Reporter department of fish and wildlife agrees. Its lions do what lions do, which is eat deer. Its not a concern for us in that it was the lion was doing exactly what it should be doing and not eating dogs and cats. Reporter they believe it is a young lion and cautioned folks to keep track of small pets. Especially your sixpound little whatever. Because a 6pound dog is the nothing but a snack for a Mountain Lion. Reporter so far, only deer are on the menu. Fish and wildlife says they are just going to leave this Mountain Lion alone, just going to let it be as long as it stays away from people. In san mateo, don ford, kpix 5. Fish and wildlife says this is a new lion that does not yet have a tracking collar. Well, where there are deer, there are Mountain Lions. Woody allen said nature is just one big restaurant.
