Also an attorney for the ez 8 motel is making a case why the motel should stay open. We met a family who is making its case. We have been here three weeks. We havent seen anything bad here. Reporter this ez 8 motel room is home for ian mccormacks family and they are happy here. I just seen families. I havent witnessed anything else. Right now he wants to go play with the kids in 214. Reporter but the city of newark paints another picture of this 30yearold motel. Its hoping tonight the Planning Commission decides its time to close it. Every one of these is an arrest. Reporter between 2009 and 2012 there were 760 arrests and 2400 emergency calls. This one location makes up 17 of the Police Departments calls for service. Theres been robberies, rapes, child abductions, kidnappings, drug use. Over the past we have had a number of issues over there and frankly we reached the point where enough is enough. Reporter this graph comparing arrests at ez 8 to other motels and hotels shows there is nothing comparable in the city. But the attorney for ez 8 says thats because their clients cooperate with police raids. Cooperation at the ez 8 with the Newark Police department results in criminals to the extent they choose to house themselves here being apprehended. Reporter she showed us an agreement signed this week with the city that includes existing and additional security measures and says the statistics are being unfairly skewed. Those crimes do not happen here for the most part. The majority of them are arrests on warrants for crimes that were committed elsewhere. Reporter last year, she says, they had roughly one arrest for every 1,000 guests. And arrests are down 73 since 2010. One way to discourage the shady characters would be to raise the room rate which is the lowest in the city. But that would push ians family into a shelter. We stay in these hotels because we cant afford to get out of the hotel. We cant afford to move into a place. Reporter Planning Commission has a number of options. It can vote to shut it down or keep it open. But theres a sense that what the Planning Commission will do is let the motel stay open while it implements the security measures. Brian, the weather really has made such a big difference because yesterday, it was really hot and dry out there and you really saw the fire spread quickly. Yeah. And today obviously they have a lot to deal with but the good news is that we have a big layer of low clouds along the shoreline in the upper atmosphere kind of cool mass of air low pressure trough and while its not cool out there, it certainly is a lot cooler than it could be. The satellite map you can see a large swatch of low clouds out there. Do we have the live mobile weather van shot . The temperature out there was in the 80s a little earlier today. Winds were variable but generally light from like 3 to 6 miles an hour. So both of those factors are good news. Temperatures lowered today, winds lowered, as well. Lets head back out to pope valley. 75 miles north of San Francisco, they still have big problem on their hands with more than 3,000 acres burned. This is a live view of widely scattered spot fires. You will notice when the spoke is lifting, its not being pushed in any particular direction. Thats one indication of what were seeing here that winds in the vicinity are calm and the humidities are up. The temperatures are down, down to 79 degrees. Pope valley a beautiful remote place which pitched itself as the way napa valley used to be. Its one valley adjacent to napa valley and you have to think in napa valley this huge tourist destination, napa has to be looking at this and thinking, it could happen here, as well. Napa is much more densely populated than what you are seeing here, the fire as it stands now in pope valley. Heres how it looks on the satellite map from 22,000 miles out. We have fog and low clouds along the shoreline. And that real northerly flow you can at least see these winds coming down in the time lapse here and thats beginning to strip the stratus away from the shoreline so we are getting a little bit of clearing in the city closer to the shore. If you are heading out tonight it will be pleasant and breezy 60s for the most part except at the beach. High pressure keeping the coast cool and inland warm. They are going to have to be motivated because this is five days a week, four hours a day and its for can be up to nine months before they get a job. Reporter when a student finds work, we are told its a career, not just a job. Many are union positions. Minimum 15, 17 an hour with benefits, retirement, pension, vacation, medical, dental. In a statement, senator boxer said these demonstrations in murrieta wouldnt have happened if the house had passed a bill. She says the measure greatly enhances Border Protection while setting up clear and fair rules for immigrants. A judge told jurors in the bryan stow trial they need to keep deliberating. It came after they said they were deadlocked after five days. Bryan stow sued the dodgers and the former owner frank mccourt. He is asking for 37 million in damages for the beating that left him permanently injured. His family says that bryan stow is going to need care 24 7 for the rest of his life. To one of the worst things a middle School Student can feel is isolated. This weeks jefferson award winner works with teenagers to prevent that. Award winning reporter sharon chin has her story. Laura talmus is working to ensure students dont feel alone. Its a tribute to her late daughter. Reporter jordan chavez knows what its like to feel left out. Feels invisible. People just pass me. Reporter but today, she helps make sure no one feels forgotten thanks to beyond differences, a nonprofit founded by laura talmus. We create leaders but we create an Inclusive Community where everybody feels accepted. Reporter lauras inspiration, her own daughter lily, who was born with a cranial facial anomaly. In middle school, lily felt left out. Laura said the worst time was during lunch. And it was pretty typical that i would get a phone call from lily at work saying, mommy, im hiding in the girls bathroom and could you, please come and pick me up . And i would say, honey, i cant. Uhm, but i felt terrible and my heart was breaking for her every day. Reporter in 2009, lily suffered complications from her disorder and died in her sleep at age 15. The next year, laura started beyond differences, so no one would have to feel as invisible as lily. I wanted to think about what you would like to see that first day of school. Reporter today High School Leaders meet at Whitehall Middle School in fairfax brainstorming ideas to welcome new middle School Students. Thats not all. More than 120 teenagers lead middle School Assemblies and clubs urging them to reach out. Student leaders run, no one eats alone, building relationships with lunchtime games and conversation starters. Marin County School superintendent marijane burke. Lauras legacy is her stick toiveness, her passion. It is possible that every school can be a safe place for every kid. Reporter jordans changed, too. If someone is sitting there like i used to just sit there, should just be able to say hi or good morning. Reporter a tribute to a mother and her daughter. That has to be spreading. Thats got to be popular. Reporter absolutely. In fact, on valentines day, they held no one eats alone at 35 schools nationwide. They are hoping for 100 schools next year and beyond differences sends out the lunchtime activity packs for free.
