About. Were at woodside elementary, where i was talking to one of the teachers. They have airconditioning here. They got it about five years ago and she saw a dramatic improvement in the energy level not only of the students but also of the teachers. That ac really packs a punch and helps these kids out. But we found a school in richmond that does not have air conditioning. King elementary was sweltering today. Students were coming inside from recess and they were realizing it was just too hot to focus on learning. There is bound to be lost learning time as a result. There is no ac on campus because the temperature in richmond usually hovers in the 70s and the schools second floor gets especially hot as heat rises and they try to make it as comfortable for students at possible. We turn off the lights to keep it cool and try to generate less heat. Windows are open and we eliminate the heat from coming in. Out of 180 school days, we may see this once or twice. As a result, we believe we have planned accordingly not to put in systems that would be a waste of taxpayer money that wouldnt be used. Reporter airconditioning is new to many schools, im sure there are a lot of people like myself who grew up in the east bay and they remember and i remember the days when we didnt have airconditioning so the teachers would turn off the lights and keep us focused that way. Kpix 550s allen martin first brought us the story and has new information. Allen . Reporter after going up to humboldt and Del Norte County thursday and friday and talking to the park rangers and seeing the damage to the trees, we knew the poachers were smart enough to get away with it but not smart enough to get away with it forever. Rangers say they did catch one person danny garcia of or rick which is a small town just south of Redwood National park. This is the damage they say he and others were causing to trees that were hundreds if not thousands of years old. Thieves go into the mountains at night and cut the burl off the trees which they use to make tables and bowls and other souvenirs. Apparently an anonymous tip led rangers to stolen burl at one of the wood shops north of the park. That burl matched the size and shape of cuts from one of the old trees. The rangers told me one reason poachers have been hard to catch is they have a warning system. The scouts hide along the road and have twoway radios and cell phones to any vehicles that come in, they can radio in or text of a lot of times they just text. You cant really track a text. They will text the people working on the hillside cutting burls, shut your saw off. Okay, coast is clear. Then they go back to work, right. Danny garcia is charged with felony grand theft, vandalism and receiving stolen property. Charges are pending against a second person who is apparently already in jail for committing another crime.
