Reporter ramos pulled jose from the torrent of water and brought him safely back to his family joses grandmother speaking to us through a translator about the terrifying afternoon saying she knows without ramos her grandson might not be here today. The city made a deal with homeless advocates to pay 28 campers to live here. 3,000 each to leave by friday and stay away for at least a year. This is the latest twist in the citys effort to clean up the former landfill known as the bulb. This area is set to be redeveloped as part of the eastst shore state park. A burglar broke into a home in concord and stole something thats priceless. Tracy says the crook took a jewelry box with a lock of her from her 7yearold son joel who died of cancer. It comes as a pedestrian was struck and critically hurt this morning at this intersection in San Francisco<\/a>. The crash happened at 20th and wawona near stern grove. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. This is the aftermath of a garage fire in novato. You can see all the damage but what we arent able to show you is what happened between the neighbors. Firefighters tell us that one of them chased down the man who lives at the house and punched him in the face he was apparently upset with all the clutter at that home. The irs is under the microscope again. A federal investigator says the agency paid millions in bonuses to employees who have been disciplined for misconduct. The conduct issues include late payment and even nonpayment of taxes. Misuse of government issued travel cards and even fraud. Congress needs to say that bonuses are not an entitlement and that in fact they must not be paid for a period of time after reprimands or other wrongdoing. Now, last year the irs came under fire for allegedly singling out Tea Party Organizations<\/a> applying for tax exempt status. The people who use marijuana could be putting themselves at risk for heart related complications even death. Thats according to a new study in the journal of the american heart association. Reporter gm said today its shipped thousands of the repair kits needed to fix the defective ignition switches linked to at least 13 deaths. Now, the companys ceo has faced tough questions on capitol hill over gms delay in fixing the problem. Gm mailed letters last week to 1. 4 million owners of 2003 to 2007 vehicles. Another 2. 6 million letters are going out in may to the owners of cars manufactured between 2008 and 2011. They are being told to schedule repair appointments and they should take about 90 minutes. The existing switches in millions of gm cars could fail without warning and have been blamed for at least 31 crashes. Drivers reported losing power steering, brakes and in some cases, airbags failed to deploy. Currently its illegal to text and drive. But it may soon be impossible. Apple has come up with a way to stop people from texting while they drive. The company has developed a new technology that can shut off an iphones texting capability if it determines a user is behind the wheel. It uses motion sensors to make that determination. Reporter each week the san ramon teenager helps children pack meals for children overseas. She collects and sells donated clothes to the homeless for a penny apiece. She teaches sunday school, bible school, goes to mexico to build houses for the homeless and volunteers teaching gymnastics. On top of her own 20 hours of practice a week, her coach mike lynch calls brittany a role model whose action speak louder than words. Her voice is soft and easy going but she has a strong will and a lot of determination. Reporter but how does she do it all . When im happy i have energy. When i have energy, im just everywhere. Reporter so for her wide ranging volunteer service, this weeks jefferson award in the bay area goes to Brittany Bates<\/a>. When brittany was 8, she didnt want the homeless to stand outside and wait in the cold for their holiday meals so she had them come inside and color place mats with her. She comes up with many of her own ways to give. She has an unbelievable heart. I mean, just what a wonderful what a wonderful role model for so many of her friends. Im sure, anybody out there. She is involved in so many charities. Can she do them all . I mean, how is she going to narrow them down when she goes to college. Reporter she says no. In fact she is trying to create partnerships among all these programs, for instance, maybe getting a meal packet from kids against hunger in pleasanton and bringing them to the homeless in san jose. So she is always thinking, she is always doing, she is always giving. Wow. What we need to bottle that up and spread it out. Pass it around. 100 of her could go a long way. Reporter she is only 16. Low pressure thats off the Pacific Northwest<\/a> means that first, clouds increase tomorrow and then tried were going to get hit with a little more rain.
