Jahi would need surgery to insert breathing and feeding tubes before the transfer. Its not clear doctors at Childrens Hospital would be willing to perform that surgery. New tonight theres a heated debate over plans for a new highrise in the heart of berkeley. If approved, a 16story hotel would be built on the corner of shattuck and center transforming the downtown landscape. As our da lin reports, its not going to go up without a fight. Da. Reporter hello, brian. A lot of proposals to develop and change this area Downtown Berkeley. This is one of the latest sites turning this bank of america building into a 16story high rise hotel. Developers picked this spot because its across the street from the Berkeley Bart station and just down the street from ucberkeley. Developers want to pump some new blood into the hearts of berkeley. They are proposing to build a 16story hotel where the bank of america is right now at the corner of shattuck and center. Really makes downtown a much more vibrant place, filling in what is kind of like a missing tooth within the downtown. Reporter developers submitted the plan last week and gave us these pictures. Bank of america, a restaurant and shops on the first floor, office space and 300 hotel rooms. We can change Downtown Berkeley for the better keeping the good qualities and bringing some new things to make it a better place. Reporter theres already criticism. Some say bringing more people to berkeley will change the character and hurt the quality of high of. Berkeley is so congested that i should think it will add a great deal to the congestion and the difficulty of getting around in berkeley. Reporter even supporters worry about parking and the buildings height just a moment it would be too high, obscure the view. Reporter at 16 stories, it would be one of the highest in berkeley similar to the wells fargo and chase buildings across the street. But many people believe berkeley needs responsible growth and say the hotel could be a good start. It would certainly continue the revitalization of Downtown Berkeley. People dont realize that theres a lot of economic depression in berkeley. It doesnt show. But its there. Reporter the Developers Want to have the highrise built in three years by 2017. By the way, the Developers Say the hotel would bring in millions in tax revenue each year for the city of berkeley. The city college of San Francisco is fighting for its future in court. If it loses its accreditation battle, tens of thousands of students are going to be left in the lurch. Linda yee was at todays hearing. The school is already taking a big hit even though nothing has been decided yet. Reporter they are appealing the loss and also taking a hit in enrollment. Already they have lost 30 of their enrollment that they had two years ago. And that means a loss in millions of federal dollars. Professors and students of city college are fighting for their schools life. They asked a judge to belong the termination of their accreditation next july and give them a redo. We want the judge to set aside the disaccreditation, create a review panel that meets the standards that the u. S. Department of education laid out, with a real peer review panel, and come back and reassess the college. Reporter the accrediting commission for junior and Community Colleges stripped city college of its accreditation saying it was out of compliance. It had problems with financial accountability and leadership. The Commission Says stopping the clock on the termination date interferes with the ongoing appeals process. The institution is not satisfied with the result, it has the right to take that into federal court and challenge it. Thats the way our system has been set up. Thats the way its always been done. Reporter but city college says while they appeal, the threat of shutting down next july is hurting the school. Its already suffered a 30 drop in enrollment. Fewer students less federal educational money. Students are going to not have confidence their degrees will mean anything or their courses will mean anything and they will get Financial Aid and they will bail. Reporter most students at city college are working class and cannot afford other institutions or even commute to neighboring ones. Thats a huge problem. I dont know where else to go. Reporter city college feels it has a very good case in its appeal because even the u. S. Department of education agrees that the Accreditation Process was flawed but the judge has not indicated when he will make that decision. Its generally agreed it could come in the next 10 days. A new transgender law will force schools across the state to update their facilities in the new year. The law requires California Public schools to let children use sexsegregated facilities and participate in gender specific activities of their own choice. The school in el cerrito is already updating its locker rooms and bathrooms. One Bay Area School board member said that teens need these changes. They are going through puberty and through their own adolescent growth, they need to have outlets especially for somebody who is transgender. Theres not enough resources that we see being developed. The statute could be suspended if a referendum to appeal it qualifies for the november ballot. Our float this year is sunrise at the oasis, kind of like a desert meets tropical rain forest. At dole we love nature and we wanted to show natures bounty. Reporter the float will display real trees, waterfall, wild animals and will be finished off with 40,000 hot pink roses. The ideas are endless. On a brandnew float this year they have dogs that are adopted dogs performing all sorts of tricks. Reporter another new entry this year will have a local dance group doing a routine to a Live Performance from kc and the sunshine band. Trees placed on the curbside or in a bin will be put through a chipper to use for landscaping and energy. 25 million live Christmas Trees are cut every year for christmas and they dont end with Christmas Day. You can recycle them. Firefighters are urging people to take their trees to the curb right away to avoid fire hazards. Recology will be collecting trees starting next thursday. All right.
