It becomes family is where you can find it and make it and for a lot of the kids here, this is their family. Reporter the staff lost their building but say they will not abandon the homeless kids who need them. They will still live in the park and well still be working with them in the park. The psychiatrists, therapists, medical team, everyone is committed to working on a street level. Hungry, they got food. If i needed clothes they had warm clothes. Reporter tim says the center has been his lifeline. Its a good place. Id hate to see it close. Reporter despite reality, staff cling to some hope. We want the christmas miracle still. It could happen. Reporter so when the doors finally close in less than an hour, the staffs parting gift to all the Homeless Youth, sleeping bags since they will no longer have a warm place to sleep. Live in the haight, linda yee, kpix 5. Wow. All right, thanks, linda. The center, by the way, serves about 5,000 Homeless Youth a year. On this Christmas Evening, santas work is far from over for several San Francisco firefighters. They are spreading Holiday Cheer right now. Kpix 5s mark kelly caught up with them while they handed out tons of toys to some very happy kids. Reporter just like santas sleigh its red and crammed with gifts but santa is not driving this. San francisco firefighters are. And they are eager to spread a little joy. You like it . Yes. Merry christmas. Reporter they surely did. You like your gift . Yes. [ laughter ] thought it was an emergency but then they came out with gifts and so it really touched me. Reporter the magical part of this giftgiving is that it wasnt planned at all. The fire truck pulls out and hands out gifts to the kids they see completely spontaneous giving catching brown and his daughter off guard. Thats what i like about it because they dont expect anything. Just roaming the streets and then, you know, just pull over and give them the biggest toy you can find and get the bright eyes and big smiles. Reporter this truck is stuck with 400 toys. The firefighters will spend 24 hours over christmas handing them out. The San Francisco supervisor thought the toy drive would be a valuable lesson for his children to experience. This is now a Family Tradition for the farrell family. We have done it three years in a row and its a great thing were going to keep doing for years to come. Reporter in a neighborhood in need of some cheering up, the tenderloin firefighters made an impact on this Christmas Day. Pretty, you know, ugly area that were in right here. But, you know, theres still some sunshine right here in this area. Thats what this is. Reporter so i talked to one of the main volunteers for all this just in the last hour who said its going well tonight and they are going to continue handing out those gifts all throughout the evening. The Union Square Bar and restaurant collected more than 11,000 new and unwrapped toys for its 13th annual Christmas Toy drive. Police and firefighters dropped off donated gifts to kids who might otherwise have gone without. Tonight kpix 5s cate caugiran shows us how hundreds of volunteers spent their christmas helping feed the less fortunate here in San Francisco. Reporter Daniel Maxwell is glide memorials resident holiday ham slicer. We first met him last year at glide where he spent his Christmas Morning volunteering as he has done for more than a decade. How many places like this, theres always hope for the future. We can bring ourselves together as people and cecil preaches gods love, well be able to overcome this. Reporter hundreds of volunteers like maxwell dedicated their christmas not for themselves but for the thousands of homeless in San Francisco. This place shares with everyone. You dont have to be a particular type of individual to come here and everyone can come in and get a warm meal, enjoy some camaraderie, enjoy a good time with the people that are here. Good morning. Merry christmas. Reporter what glide does is a wellknown story in the city, a story so many volunteers love being part of every year. For more than 40 years, the organization has helped the needy 364 days a year feeding them three meals a day. Merry christmas. A lot of our folks come every year every holiday. So you will see the same faces every morning at 6 30 in the morning. Hi. You become family. I see them more than my own family for the holidays. Reporter today menu was turkey, ham, Sweet Potatoes and stuffing everything you want in a holiday meal, satisfying a need thats growing every year. We are seeing more and more people who dont have the cash flow if you will to purchase food throughout the month so they come to see us. Reporter glide says they dont have problem with volunteers during the holidays. Its the days after christmas where they could really use the help. In San Francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. Those in need got a christmas meal also in san jose and this is as a result of a grassroots effort. Dozens of Community Members raised 1,000 to put together todays barbecue at st. James park. This means someone cares in this town it. The people who come out here are volunteers. Some of them are corporations. They are not paid by any taxpayers. They come out on their own from their hearts. Im fortunate to have a roof over my head, to have dinner on my table. Other people may not be as fortunate as us so we come out here to try to spread the Holiday Cheer. This is the third year these guys have helped feed the needy and they say this event is getting bigger every year. Another special act of kindness this christmas, byus Football Team prepared and served thousands of meals at st. Anthonys in San Francisco today. The teams in town for a bowl game and they were joined by a few other community volunteers. Greatest reward that we get from this is when we hand the tray to someone, theyre very grateful and thankful for it. You see a big smile on their faces when they are cutting into a nice big piece of ham. In addition to a warm christmas meal, every diner received a gift bag with toiletries and hand made scarves. More free clothes and food for the homeless near San Franciscos civic center today. Needpeople looked through clothes distributed by a Nonprofit Group called wednesdays gift. Its basically kind of a black friday on Christmas Morning. People its like were in a changing room sort of. People shopping for what fits them. The man you just saw there created wednesdays gift after he almost lost his home. The organization is asking for more weatherappropriate donations such as gloves, hats, blanket and sleeping bags. Of course, most businesses are closed on christmas. But today, some are making a point to cultivate customers. Don ford, for instance. He is one of the our ace photographers. And he showed up for work. Reporter Christmas Day, streets empty, businesses closed, except for the classics [ music ] reporter just around the corner from the berkeley synagogue, sauls deli and restaurant is booming. 59 minute wait for a table. Reporter must be good because folks are waiting that long. They are dancing in the streets. This couple are treating their family from new york. Across town, i know its a cliche but yes, of course 7 eleven is open. We never, ever close. This is my 18th year and i dont remember that i have closed for a single day. Reporter today its a family affair. He and his son are working so the other employees have some time off. Local customers are glad, too. We are getting champagne for some more mimosas. Come get gas for christmas. Reporter the shell station is another business that never closes. Ever. We are very glad that this gas station is open at this very moment because we needed it. Two kids in newark have no christmas presents to open. They woke up this morning and realized there were no gifts under the tree. Somebody snuck into the house and stole them all. Police say the burglars got in through an unlocked window on Cherry Street last night while the family was away at a christmas party. The family says they didnt realize the gifts were gone until this morning. But in the spirit of giving, the Newark Police officers pooled 200 and gave it to the family. So far no arrests in the case. A hepatitis a scare at a restaurant in San Franciscos north beach neighborhood one of the workers at the comstock saloon came down with the illness. The Health Department is advising people who dined or had drinks at the restaurant between december 12th and the 15th, or december 19th, they may have been exposed. However, it is very unlikely people could get sick. So far there are no reported cases. Tonight investigators are looking for the motive behind a Christmas Day shooting that left people dead in san lorenzo. Authorities say a man killed his wife and then himself. Investigators found the bodies inside a garage. She was shot several times, the man once. The children were in the home at the time of the shooting. All we know is that for whatever reason, on Christmas Morning, this man decided to take this womans life and we dont know why. Later in the day the sheriffs Spokesman Says there is evidence of marital discord. Deputies dont think anybody else inside the house was ever targeted. Other bay area headlines, San FranciscoPolice Say Two homeless women stabbed each other in the south of market area this morning. Police say they got into an argument by 13th and mission streets. One woman has wounds to her back, neck and face. The other has an eye injury. Both are in the hospital and expected to survive. Doors and windows blackened and debris on the sidewalk after an earlymorning fire in the potrero neighborhood around midnight at a house with multiple units on potrero avenue near 23rd street. Crews got it under control in 45 minutes but 10 people are displaced. Experts havent figured out what started the fire. A little boy is tackling a grownup issue, cbs reporter amy johnson showing us how this creative 6yearold is raising money to help the homeless. This is a blanket. Reporter and they didnt keep any of the money they raised. All of it went to the Union StationHomeless Services in pasadena. Nope. We gave it to the homeless shelter. Reporter why did you give it to the homeless shelter. So they can give it to the Homeless People so they can have more money and maybe buy a tiny hours or maybe Something Like [ indiscernible ] or something. Reporter i asked why he couldnt keep a little bit of the money. Because i get a [ indiscernible ] my idea. Reporter his mother helped by posting the art sale on social media. I said it was really exciting just to see him thinking that way. You know . So i just wanted to help him embrace it. Reporter with the money augie donated the folks here at Union StationHomeless Services were able to provide more than 200 meals to those in need. He blew us away. Reporter dana bean is the director of development at the facility that not only provides food and shelter but also job training. If a 6yearold can see something that he wants to change and make this much of an impact, really anyone can do it. So he sends a great message to everyone that they can make a difference.
