dispatchers say they are afraid they may not be able to perform at that high a level because of what they describe as hours and hours of forced overtime. They called it blowing the whistle on

and shining a light on a shortage of 911 operators. Were so short staffed that management has instituted a mandatory overtime policy to the point of preventing dispatchers from going home for up to 14 hours a day. Reporter
Union Members
including 911 dispatchers say they are prepared to walk off the job in order to fix what they call their own staffing emergency. Voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike by 96 . Reporter no strike has yet been called but the possibility of a walkout is hanging over salary negotiations with the county. The affected dispatchers are those who answer the call for 911 in unincorporated areas. The staffing level is authorized for 75 dispatchers but the union says only 50 are on the job. The county says the number is closer to 64 but both sides agree it is a shortage. I agree that there is a number of vacancies. We are recruiting. We are using all methods at the moment. We are looking for transfers from other agencies. Reporter the problem according to union is

This camp, were very fortunate to still be here this morning. Reporter the flames have destroyed at least two homes and threatened at least 2500 buildings including homes and hotels. The people who live in the area are shaken. I think im still in a little bit of shock, but ill be balling my eyes out when i start to calm down because this is my backyard. Reporter flames crossed a major road into yosemite closing a fourmile stretch of it. The blaze is one of more than 50 major fires burning in several western states. This noaa animation shows the trail of smoke from the fires. The steep mountainous terrain is making it difficult for crews to get to the flames burning around yosemite. The work thats going on today is to put a temporary connector at the oakland side so the public can start outing can start using the bridge. Reporter on yerba buena island, what looks like oversized ikea furniture is being hoisted up on to the new deck where it gets trucked across the bridge to oakland. Its all going up here because thats where they had room to build 270,000 pounds of bike ramp. The modules are made of douglas firs. Reporter once it opens you go from east bay soil on to the new bay bridge giving cyclists and pedestrians a path all the way across the new span stopping just short of yerba buena island. At least for now. After traffic has been moved on to the new eastern span, they will start to demolish the original east span near the tunnel freeing up the room to connect the bike path into the island. Reporter and while the path will remain incomplete for some time, it will still offer a brandnew ride with a view you have never seen before. A 2 grade all the way out and all the way back, and youre going to get some really great views of the original east span, which people havent had before, but also of the bay. After 25 years earls organic is still growing about to add even more space. The new space, which opens at the end of the year, is right next door and two times the size of the current one. This room alone will be a giant refrigerator. Soon enough organic produce will line these shelves. Staff see a colorful future for organics. We eat what we sell. We taste it. We love it. Reporter but organics is not without challenges. Helping small organic farmers get goods to market is one of them. But those challenges are for tomorrow. Com a specialized care and rescue facility near brentwood. We take in miniature horses that have become too much for the owners. Reporter these horses came from the redding area and all from one owner. She had over 200 horses. And she surrendered 47 of them to us because she simply cant care for all of them. Reporter theyre not much bigger than some dogs. Some were a little worse for wear but theyll get vaccinations and their hooves trimmed and a bath. Animal rescuers have seen a glut of mini horses. They are given up by pet owners unable to pay for the upkeep. And all these horses will need new homes. We have about 30, 35 more to place. So we are looking for good homes that can appreciate them as much as we do. Ha, baby girl. I love you. Its not like money is falling in our laps. We have had to work for it but we found everybody wants to help out with this kind of program. Besides protecting officers, the dogs are trained to track. Sniff out drugs and be goodwill ambassadors for the department so everyone was excited at the swearingin sermoned night including one of the dogs himself.
