It will cost up to 1. 3 million to fix the structural problems. We were actually hoping to be able to get in and start working in the sinkhole to remove debris and assets damage. The challenge they are now facing is another round of this Rainy Weather making conditions hazardous. They say the area could be inundated with storm water again if a storm drainage system cant handle creek overflows and on and off throughout the morning we have already been watching some of that rain currently died down a little bit now but still expecting more later on. The next step in all of this the city is looking to hire a contractor. They say they are currently accepting bids. Live in orinda, Sandra Osborne, kpix 5. And rain is here. For more on that, heres brian. You bet, mrs. Griego. We have the kpix 5 hidef Doppler Radar fired up. A band moved through at 3 a. M. And now theres some good cells around the bay area. But it will ease up before the brunt of the front comes in around midday today. Still, just east of san ramon and dublin and the 680 corridor and toward livermore. Theres one initial wave of moderate rain. Then down toward the south bay you can see that on 880 right around 880101 theres good showers, as well. Then rain in the los altos hills. In general the push comes in here early afternoon in the north bay and it gets right in time for the evening commute. Look at that. And in addition to this, there could be some shocking weather this afternoon the potential for lightning and maybe a few thunderstorms. Well see if that develops as the day wears on. Then its a fast mover. Thats the good news. We should not see the dramatic problems we had last week because it moves so fast. And the rain amounts will not be as much. About a half down below to 2 inches up top. We shouldnt see spiking on the rivers. You always have to stay tuned. High wind alerts posted, as well. Wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour. So along with the rain the wind, maybe some lightning, a brief break on thursday. And then two more storms due into the bay area on friday and on sunday. Both of them similar to what well see later today. Rain should ease up in the next few hours with a few drops around again before the front develops later today. High temperature forecast its going to be chilly out there. Temperatures only in the low 50s, extended forecast we are going to be looking for rain today especially after midday. Thursday a few showers, then friday another storm coming in. A break on saturday before the last in this 123 punch moves through on sunday and then we exhale on monday and tuesday. Thats weather. So lets take a look at some closures were still dealing with from last weeks storm in marin. Highway 1 between panoramic highway and muir woods road is closed due to last weeks storm and well see how this new round of rain affects the area. Take panoramic highway past the closure to get back on to your route. Moving over to the Golden Gate Bridge from marin county into the toll plaza, that will take you about 14 minutes from 580 in san rafael but looking good otherwise just some slick roads around the area. Light rain means slick roads. So take it slow. Heres a live look at the toll plaza. The bay bridge metering lights are on and that traffic is backing up into the maze now. The maze to downtown will take you about 15 to 20 minutes so not too bad of a commute so far. Okay. Lets move over to woodside along the peninsula. Utility work on highway 84 is still under oneway Traffic Control from last weeks storm. Pg e is replacing power poles but because of the rain today, they just have it closed to oneway control. But since the election, its just, um, really large problem about, um, common decency and how we interact it one another. Thats east bay congressman mark desaul and a one of 54 who plan to skip it. Thats about 10 of lawmakers in congress. For many it is simply a vote of no confidence in president elect donald trump. Im just not celebrating an administration that campaigns and continues to, um, be divisive, um, one that denigrated women and wants to deport dreamers. Many of the lawmakers skipping the ceremony are Holding Events in their own districts like congressman Jared Huffman of san rafael hosting three days of service on saturday, Naturalization Service friday, habitat for humanity and cleaning up the russian river. On saturday speaking at a womens march in santa rosa. Speaking of the womens march in santa rosa, theres a big one in washington, dc on saturday. Some say its because they have Better Things to do that day. Others say that they are specifically preparing for the womens march on saturday. But some say they are skipping it to best represent the feelings of their constituents. Congressman karen bass from california took a poll on twitter asking people if she should go or not. You see a lot of cars in the water there. In some parts of the city they got 2 inches of rain an hour. More rain is expected through today and tomorrow before things dry out on friday. A series of earthquakes hit this morning in italy in the same region hit last year. You can see the lights shaking at a tv station in rome. Schools there were evacuated and the subway was shut down. The quake was centered about 100 miles northeast of the city. In the span of an hour, two 5. 3 quakes and a 5. 7 quake struck. There are no reports of deaths. President obama is expected to grant more commutations today. The white house says he will focus on drug offenders. He caused controversy yesterday when he commuted the sentence for bradley manning. The guy is a traitor and im disappointed. Chelsea manning was sentenced to a period of time thats much longer than those who have been convicted of comparable crimes. Manning is a transgender person who was serving 35 years for stealing classified information and giving it to wikileaks. President obama also granted commutations to more than 200 other criminals and pardoned dozens of others. One is for Willie Mccovey convicted in 1995 for tax evasion. He was on probation for two years. The battle over a sports bar in San Francisco is ugly. The owner of the lefty odouls building is suing the family that runs the bar. The dispute is over who owns the baseball memorabilia in the bar. The operators announced last week they couldnt secure a new lease there and plan to reopen in a new location. The owner of the building plans to reopen the bar in the same location after some renovations. Fans are raising money for the members of the tower of power band who were hit by a train. They held a benefit concert last night in oakland. [ music ] it was held at yoshis the same place where the band was supposed to play last thursday. Marc Van Wageningen and Dave Garibaldi were hit by a train crossing the tracks. The same storm in the bay area is now sparking flooding concerns along the oregon coast. Locals in Tillamook County have been warned about heavy rains and sneaker waves but winds could spell the biggest trouble with gusts up to 70 miles an hour. In portland, a mix of snow and rain is making for a tough commute. Crews have been working to remove the snow and ice covering the citys 50,000 storm drains so water can recede at intersections. In grass valley, california, a sevenstory sinkhole. Its likely to grow as showers hit the area. Nevada county Officials Say it opened up about a week ago and kept getting bigger over the weekend. With gusts expected to reach 40 miles an hour in grass valley, officials are expecting significant damage. They expect repairs will cost around 2. 5 million. Wow. The roads arent too bad. So i would suggest you go ahead and take mass transit today because of that rain coming down harder later. Art, ace train, muni and caltrain is on time and capitol corridor delay train number 521 delayed because of track work by 20 minutes. From marin to San Francisco, heres the Golden Gate Bridge. Traffic moving smoothly and a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, those metering lights are on. So its slowing you down a bit. Traffic backed up into the maze here. The maze to downtown will now take you up to 20 minutes or so. Same story at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. We have some slow traffic moving along here. That will take you about 20 minutes between 880 and 101. And if you are traveling along the Altamont Pass, ohoh 6 Miles Per Hour coming out of tracy. Wow then you move up to 33 Miles Per Hour once you hit north flynn road. So north tracy boulevard to the Altamont Pass will now take you about an hour or so if you are heading out that way so give yourself some extra time. Ill send it to you. All right, roqui. Thank you. We have a wet start to this wednesday morning with low pressure thats powering a series of storms that targeted Northern California. Of course were all worried about is this a repeat performance of last week . It shouldnt be because theres not as much moisture in the stream that does stretch back to the tropics. But. The situation isnt exactly the same. These are fastmoving systems. Its not going to just sit on top of us and rain and rain and rain. It will come in spurts and when it comes, boy, it will pour. But then it should whew be out of there. We are already see that. Fairly fastmoving cells in the bay area beginning at 3 a. M. This was the initial band that a lot of us experienced when we got up this morning. Now it eases up a little bit. Big front comes in later in the day. Still lets focus on what we have at the moment which is some good cells now that are heading east of livermore and out toward the Altamont Pass. Down in the south bay, mostly over the hamilton range and a little bit there thats coming in over san jose and sunnyvale. And these will dissipate during the earlymorning hours and then well get a little bit of a break. Rain turning to snow in the mountains. Winter storm warnings already up, snow, gusty winds, snow level down to 4500 feet and another 6 to 18 inches of snow on top of the epic amounts they already have in the mountains. So they will get snow up there. Down here futurecast shows whats happening later in the day. We get the front initially touching the north bay in the early afternoon at around 1 00 to 3 00 and then watch what happens during the evening choose, just wham right in the middle of the commute. And it could be showers and thundershowers instability with this. But its fastmoving. It gets out of the area quickly leaving us with just a few pop up showers by tomorrow morning. So thursday isolated showers after we deal with what we have today. In addition to the rain we have the winds. 30 miles an hour in the lowlands. Thats pretty good winds. Up top they are up to 60 miles an hour. So power lines down, tree damage, that could be expected with this sort of thing as well as perhaps an electrical storm or two. Well see. So to sum it up, heavy rain will be moving into the bay area around midday today. It moves south and out by tonight. We get a brief break for much of thursday then two more storms, one on friday, one on sunday. And as we look live, the numbers that were starting out and heading into wednesday with are in the upper 40s a little chilly out of sfo, it could be some slowdowns at the airport with rain developing. Kpix 5s Sandra Osborne has more live from miner road which will be closed for weeks. Reporter good morning. The city officials have declared a state of emergency for orinda. You can see a fence blocking miner road to any through traffic. It is blocking the path to neighborhoods including Sleepy Hollow on the other side of the fence. We have some video from our sky drone over the massive sinkhole. City officials held a special meeting last night about this declaring the state of emergency. They say crews will have to work seven days a week for at least four weeks to get it fixed. Two sewer main lines a culvert and the asphalt heavily damaged. The city is taking bids from potential contractors but the next round of rain is a big concern. They say the area could be inundaunted filled with storm water. It will cost over a Million Dollars to fix. Sandra osborne, kpix 5. Time now 6 31. So whats the shocking weather youre talking about, brian . Could get some thunderstorms this afternoon. Oh, wow. Its unstable weather. Like unstable people. Whats going to happen next . And we know a lot of those. [ laughter ] especially in this business. Thats whats happening this afternoon. We have a chance of electrical storms rain and wind. First the kpix 5 hidef doppler. We have that first band of rain run through and a few tenths of an inch but thats about it now its heading east fast with some cells in the east bay and down to the south bay. But aside from these two areas, you pull back and you can see that most of it is now headed out to the east. We get a chance to dry a little bit. This was just initial overrunning rain. Its kind of setting the stage for what happens later in the day and what happens later in the day is we get some strong cells coming down from the north. And these going to give us some rain. The wind, the potential for a thunderstorm, and then we get a break tomorrow before the next one comes in on friday. And then another one on sunday. So expect wet today. But dont think that this is all that were getting this earlymorning stuff because you can see that later in the afternoon, by about 3 00 we have widely scattered some heavy cells first concentrating on the north bay, and then later in the day in time for the evening commute of course, bang we get hit with some heavy cells and thats when we looking for a better chance towards afternoon and evening of some of thunderstorms happening around the bay area. But its a fast mover. Well get a half to two inches of rain and then its out. Thursday a few isolated showers before the next one comes in early friday morning. Wind advisory, strong winds, rain again today, trees could come down, power lines could come down, power could go out. Well see. So heres what we expect. Thats a 22minute commute now. And if you are traveling in woodside, utility work still on highway 84 from last weeks storm, its still under oneway Traffic Control due to pg e out there trying to repair some power poles. Its raining now so they are not out there working but our stage manager says its down to one lane in both directions so give yourself some extra time. Moving over to the bay bridge toll plaza, those metering lights are on. So the maze to downtown will take you about 20 minutes. So give yourself some extra time if you are heading into downtown. Anne makovec is here with details on this womens march. Its not just for women. Its for men, also. It is going to be really huge this year bringing together more than 100 different interest groups, planned parenthood, sierra club, naacp and moveon. Org so organizers hope this march will spin a sort of web of activism going forward. The official womens march on washington will be saturday in d. C. And on the events website organizers say the rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized and threatened many people and the march is the first step toward unifying our communities grounded in new relationships to create change from the Grassroots Level up. A lot of people from the bay area are flying to dc to take part. Its something that i woke up, i called my girlfriend, and we were, like, we have to do this. We have to do this. We cannot step back and let people do this for us. Reporter and she will unite with other women around the country wearing symbolic pink hats. There will be marches here in the bay area as well this saturday. Socalled sister marches including a rally at San Francisco city hall at 3 p. M. Oakland marchers gathering at madison park at 10 a. M. To make their way toward Frank Ogawa Plaza and in san jose, the march will start at city hall at 10 a. M. And walk toward cesar chavez park. And it is not just here in the u. S. There are womens marches planned in 32 countries around the world. You can bet this is going to be a huge trend on social media this weekend. Oh, yes. Sounds like it. So who is organizing the march in dc . Some of its leaders are veterans civil rights lieders, the march has named two honorary cochairs Gloria Steinem and harry belafonte. The organizers say they are planning civil disobedience. They say they are working with local and federal officers to make sure everything runs smoothly.
