So today were talking about the extra security with public transit. Homeland security personnel are on patrol in bart in San Francisco, today at the embarcadero station the Transportation Security Administration will showcase what local and federal officers are doing to prevent any incidents. And, of course, down in santa clara, a stretch of tasman drive in front of levis stadium is now closed through tuesday. Armed officers are patrolling the area. The Security Force includes local police, fbi agents as well as s. W. A. T. Teams from departments up and down the west coast. Kpix 5 security analyst jeffrey harp spent years working with the fbi and knows the pressure that comes with big events. In this line of work, theres no margin of error and the people have that expectation of Law Enforcement. They have a very high expectation, they hold to us a very high standard. So they expect the best when it comes to game day. Reporter the department of Homeland Security is the lead agency when it comes to argues. The fbi leads both investigations and tactical assets. A chp officer is in stable conditions this morning after being slashed with a knife by a homeless man. The officer and his partner stopped the man who was walking on the essex street ramp to the bay bridge early yesterday. During the conversation, the man pulled out a knife and attacked the officer. He was stabbed in the neck and arm. The officer suffered critical injuries but is now in stable condition and is expected to recover. The stabbing happened near a homeless encampment and highlights recent tensions between police and the homeless. Raising a lot of questions. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us live at pier 80 with whats behind all the complaints. Cate reporter it is causing controversy. The homeless say they have a plan to get the citys attention. But it doesnt involve moving in here to pier 80. We can tell you what they have to do what they are going to do. The city converted the 10,000 squarefoot warehouse into a temporary home for 150 people who have been living in tents throughout the city. The city says its set up with hygiene kits and beds. But homeless tell us its in an isolated area and they wont go. Its too far out. I dont think so. Not from here. These people from here will not go there. Youre going to have to leave and well give you an alternative and were always going to be supportive but youre going to have to leave the streets. Reporter thats what mayor lee said last summer. The homeless and supporters plan to protest by setting up a tenth city to en what they call the criminalization of poverty. They will set up a tenth city outside super bowl the city. A tent city outside super bowl city. They will wear 9ers color to, quote, tackle homelessness. So far at least 800 people have rsvpd yes but organizers say we can expect more to show up near sinbads on pier 2. That protest will be right around 4 30 this afternoon. Whats alarming is both students had been confirmed to have the same bacterial strain of meningitis. Thats all we know for now. Its not clear if they knew each other. Meningitis is spread by close or lengthy contact with asaliva or mucous of an infected patient. It can take up to 10 days for symptoms to appear. They are like the flu. Stiff neck, headache, high fever, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and confusion. The Health Department is offering free vaccinations here on campus on thursday and friday. The department of Water Resources says the snowpack is 130 of normal for this time of year. Thats higher than we have seen in about 5 years. The drought is far from only. Californians cut their water use by 18 in december and efforts fell short of the governors 25 mandate for a third consecutive month. His order was set to expire this month. But yesterday state regulators voted to extend it into the fall with an adjustment. Starting in march, urban californians must cut use by 23 compared to 2013. After this, well see probably about 12 to 15 aircraft per hour departing from the field. Its not just the private jets that will see the increase. Commercial travel will be up 30 . It happened yesterday on the essex street ramp to the bay bridge. The officer and his partner stopped the man walking on the ramp. Police say he suddenly pulled a knife and attacked the officer stabbing him in the neck and arm. The homeless man took off but was caught a few blocks away. The officer is now in stable condition. Cate reporter the city says they are offering up pier 80 right behind me as a place for the homeless to go but the homeless say that this place is too far, too, isolated and they wont go. So today, homeless and their supporters plan to protest and according to the Facebook Event invite, hundreds of people will ahead to pier 2 at 4 30 today. Protestors are planning to wear red and gold 49ers colors in order to, quote, tackle homeless ness. They plan to set up a tent city. They say its a employ too keep them out of sight. Its too far out. I dont think so. Not from here. These people from here will not go there. The tents cant stay there if theres shelter available. Its illegal to put up a tent and block public sidewalks. Last summer mayor lee told the homeless they need to leave the streets. But the city would offer support and thats what pier 80 is supposed to be. The warehouse holds about 150 people. Its also set up with beds and hygiene kits. Now, we know they are going to open pier 80 to the homeless today but with the mounting tension between the city and the homeless, the question is, who will show up .
