investigation. surveillance video shows them in the lobby of the dunnigan motel six november 27 with no children two weeks before their arrest. amanda latham was working the desk that day and checked the pair in. she says nothing about them seemed unusual. >> they seemed like everyday people going about their lives like nothing. that was shocking that they seemed so mellow and calm and --like nothing was wrong. >> reporter: motel surveillance video also shows the pair driving the same suv that police say they later found 9- year-old frankie locked inside severely beaten. >> why do this now? why to these children? why did you do what you did? i mean, were you sick? were you going through something? did you need help? if so, why didn't you get the proper help? >> that was steve large reporting. huntsman was reported to child protective services four times in the last year for alleged neglect. each time workers visited her salinas home but never removed children from her care. every. later this morning funeral service will be held in san francisco for mario woods. the man who was shot this month by police. anne makovec is at police headquarters where the chief spoke about some changes following the shooting. anne. >> reporter: where there are three separate investigations going on right now into the officers' conduct that day. mario woods was shot and killed by police on december 2 in the bayview neighborhood. he was wielding a kitchen knife. he is accused of using it in a stabbing earlier this day. the confrontation was caught by several witness cell phones. the video raise questions of how much a threat woods actually was and the incident prompting changes within the sfpd including a new system that holds officers more accountable for use of force. anytime that an officer points their gun at somebody they have to document it and write a report as to why. >> reporter: the shooting has a lot of city leaders calling for police to be armed with tasers. some of the supporters of that plan, the police chief, the mayor and the president of the officers union. the city has considered this twice before and rejected it. many say that the outcome of the woods incident would have been much different if officers had that available to them as a possibility. woods' funeral set for 11 a.m. this morning. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. road rage reportedly led to a knife fight along a busy bay area highway. now an oakland man is in custody. the altercation happened on highway 24 in orinda near st. stevens drive on tuesday night. the chp says two drivers went at each other with knives, slashing each other's tires. and one man got stabbed. investigators say it all started in oakland when one driver threw something at the other man's car. this crash southbound 101 first report places it at lucas valley. there's another report from another driver out there that calls it at san antonio. be prepared for possible delays. this accident up at about 18 minutes after the hour. investigators are trying to identify human remains found in san francisco behind a home. a resident found the bones while gardening on the mcallister street property last month. that person brought the bones to police. cadaver dogs did not find any other remains on the property. three jail guards accused of murder in santa clara county want to bar the public and media from the courtroom. they are accused of beating an inmate to death in august and assaulting another. the defense claims extensive publicity about the case already threatens the chances of a fair trial and that following the public into a preliminary hearing would negatively influence potential jurors. two daily fantasy sports giants fighting to stay alive in california. yesterday they faced a board of lawmakers in sacramento. draftkings and fanduel want looser regulations. they have already been banned in new york and novato so the sites are trying to help states create a set of rules instead of facing an outright ban. the companies argue the games involve skill so they are not gambling. this is exciting. the new "star wars" movie opens at theaters nationwide [ bark ] looking at mineta international airport at 6:12 a.m., no reports of local airport delays. we have partly to mostly cloudy skies on tap for today. we have rain heading this way and we have your forecast in less than 4 minutes. >> the husband and wife behind the san bernardino terrorist attacks have been buried. yesterday's funeral was heavily guarded by fbi agents. the location is not disclosed. it's only described as being hours from san bernardino. meanwhile, the fbi says sayed farook and tashfeen malik did not post anything about jihad or martyrdom on social media before the attack as the agency previously claimed. federal prosecutors have decided to bring criminal charges against a friend and former neighbor of farook's. enrique marquez could be charged as soon as today. investigators say marquez bought two assault rifles three years ago and they wound up being used in the shooting. hundreds of lizards, snakes and reptiles are in an animal shelter after a pet store went up in flame in orange county. 50 firefighters responded after flames broke out last night in stanton. some reptiles had to be treated for smoke inhalation. bay area is pushing to reduce air pollution. yesterday the clear air board adopted new rules designed to clean up oil refineries emissions by 14%. it includes tougher regulation on leaks and cooling towers but they didn't take action on the proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions disappointing environmentalists. there's a recent move in the bay area called maker space. they are zones of self-directed learning. and now that movement has found it way into an oakland school. this week's cool school is la escuelita. >> reporter: most libraries are quiet but not here at la escuelita elementary school. a book room has been transformed into a makerspace, a place where students are learning by doing. >> through the process of learning how to make something, students learn in a more authentic way in which they are using their bodies, they are using their minds, they are working through failures, um, they are trying to work together. they are being creative and thinking up new solutions and are persistent. >> reporter: kindergarteners to 7th graders come here once a week to make, play and design. volunteers, experts at a craft, teach them skills like crocheting. >> it's fun. you get to learn how to make stuff, like wallets and purses. >> we build things, make things, paint. sometimes we can take down homes. >> reporter: the school received a $60,000 grant from the next generation learning challenge to create this makerspace. >> i'm making paperclip jewelry. i have to finish this necklace. >> reporter: they use their imaginations and creativity to make a product. >> they have a lot of ownership and a lot of excitement about what they're building and they come with these amazing ideas. >> i think about it like fun because every day i come here feel like i want to make something like cool. >> reporter: at the end of the year, the school will hold a makers fair where their creations will be on display. >> i'm really excited to see students being able to use l.e.d., circuits and textile crafts and fiber art and whatever they have learned in the course of their time here. >> crocheting, they are learning a lot of really cool skills and the volunteers are experts in their california. they go in and volunteer their time and show the kids how to create. >> they need more mentors and volunteers to come. they need more materials. so, yeah. >> that's cool. i guess moms and dads are going to get some creative christmas gift, too. >> yes! that's the best part. >> what's cool about your school? email your nomination to us at coolschools@kpix.com. we may come and feature your school on the show. all right. let's check on traffic. how's it looking. it's good so far. we have this one accident we have been watching in marin county. good morning, this one southbound 101 first reports in san rafael. chp got out there and they are telling us that actually at the marin-sonoma county line southbound 101 approaching san antonio, this accident involving a big rig and another car. it looks like it's off to the side but already, we are seeing delays now for that southbound 101 commute. it is backed up through petaluma almost to cotati at this hour. so be prepared for delays. over at the bay bridge toll plaza, backed up to the 880 overcrossing with the metering lights on. once you past the lights, traffic picks up across the bridge into san francisco. 880 as it rolls through the east bay, northbound traffic a little slow now approaching high street. that southbound commute still fine leaving oakland bound for hayward. and if you plan to make the sillicon valley drive, most commutes are moving well. the exception this morning would be the northbound 101 commute that is going to be slow for your from 280 to old bayshore also some heavy traffic now through northbound 880 as you leave the san jose area bound for milpitas. that's a look at "kcbs traffic." here's roberta. >> it's fired up. it's live. it's hi-def doppler radar. i have the radar site at mount vaca. i have another one at mount umunum and another one in eureka. no rain locally but upstream we have rain around the northwestern portion of the bay area. we had some snow earlier this morning falling in the siskiyous. this is so vitally important because we want to see the rain in our reservoirs. looking out towards the bay bridge, partly to mostly cloudy skies this morning as you head out the door. temperatures you're going to feel the difference. sprinkles north of the golden gate bridge. otherwise the bulk of the activities. the rain from the first storm moves in on friday. sprinkles around santa rosa around lunch hour to 2 p.m. for the most partly cloudy skies part. that right there is the front associated with this cold front having nothing to do with el nino. it slices across the central bay towards the tail end of that evening commute with the copious amounts of rainfall. now, as your saturday progresses, the core, the center of the area of low pressure, that pushes through driving more rain into the bay area also some breezy conditions. saturday afternoon into the evening hours, we have a break in the activity. we should see up to an inch of rain in the fairfield area up to an inch of rain in santa rosa, as well. over an inch and a quarter in ukiah from this first system and we'll have some snow on the fly in the greater lake tahoe area. our temperatures today under 60 degrees. we are currently in the 30s and 40s going up to the mid-50s for the most part. there you have your sun-up and sundown. 9 hours and 34 minutes of daylight but you won't see the abundance of sunshine. rain comes in afternoon into the evening hours. it trails off saturday afternoon. the second system sunday night into monday morning. make it a great thursday. time now is 6:19. hundreds of muni buses are pulled from service after some of them suddenly catch fire. the problem that has mechanics working overtime. i'm dennis o'donnell. coming up one of donald trump's supporters, tom brady, was asked about the donald yesterday. his reaction is straight ahead. and was the force with the warriors last night? we have to have more than just the lethal weapon response to someone carrying a knife. >> actually have to look at the entire operation of san francisco police department. >> reporter: among the supporters of the taser proposition the police chief, the mayor and the president of the officers union. in the meantime woods' funeral is set for 11:00 this morning in the bayview. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. the head of monterey county's social services is talking about the case of two children whose bodies were found in a storage unit in redding. the children's mother was killed in a car accident so they were in the custody of their cousin tami joy huntsman. she and gonzalo curiel were arrested. she was reported four times in the last year for neglect. each time workers visited her salinas home, the children were allowed to stay. >> if we could see the future, clearly, we would have intervened. >> you can't predict crime. and that's an important principle for society. >> the kids' 9-year-old sister was found in plumas county with signs of severe abuse. she is getting treatment at the hospital. firefighters in vallejo made quick work of a house fire this morning. it broke out shortly before 2 a.m. at a home on raines court. it was under control within about a half-hour. but there was a wider impact. the fire caused a transformer to blow knocking out power to most of the block. the cause of the fire is under investigation. many muni buses and trolleys are turning 15 which is typically the year they get taken off the roads. as the aging fleet chugs along, there have been a couple of close calls. just last week, two of the buses caught fire. and now muni has decided to put hundreds of buses and trolleys through inspection. >> last week, we have a fire at the top of the pole that connections the pole to the overhead wire. >> of the 300 buses checked, 26 of them had problems. muni says they have ordered new buses but it will be a while before they come. it is 6:33. big getaway weekend for folks with the holiday around the corner. how are we looking? >> have you noticed it's been heavy on the roads going home? there's a lot of people out and about. you have to stay on top of the weather this time of the year because we have major changes happening, significant weather changes right here in the bay area and throughout the high sierra. it's live, it's our hi-def doppler radar. we are not picking up any raindrops as of yet but when we go to the northwestern section of the state plenty of precipitation. that's the scene looking out toward the bay waters where we have clouds floating around the. temperatures not as cold as 24 hours ago, 30s nonetheless away from the bay. so this is that first system that's going to impact our day today in the form of just some sprinkles in the north bay. otherwise, the main event associated with that cold front is moving in late friday afternoon into friday evening. so pretty quiet today with temperatures into the 50s. we will track that coming up. an accident southbound 101 approaching san antonio. no lanes are shut down. this big rig accident is on the right-hand shoulder so it's more of a looky-loo factor for the very busy petaluma commute. traffic is backed up almost to old redwood highway. so be prepared for those delays through south 101 as you try to get into marin county. the bay bridge commute the metering lights are on. traffic at the toll plaza is backed up from beyond the 880 overcrossing. eastshore freeway looking okay. the nimitz is steady no major issues for this stretch of 880, just a brief delay for that northbound drive approaching high street. i'll have another look at "kcbs traffic" coming up. a grand jury indicted a chicago police officer in the shooting death of a teenager. officer jason van dyke is charged with first-degree murder and official misconduct. the indictment alleges van dyke shot 17-year-old laquan mcdonald knowing it could cause, quote, death or great bodily harm. mcdonald's walking down the streetcar rig a knife last year when van dyke shot him 16 times. aside from a couple of scuffles, protests remained under control in baltimore overnight after a mistrial was declared in a police officer's manslaughter trial. william porter was the first of six baltimore officers to be tried in connection with the death of freddie gray. gray died in april after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody. after three days of deliberations, the jury emerged deadlocked on all counts. >> we are confident that there will be another trial with a different jury. we are calm. you should be calm, too. >> lawyers will meet today to discuss dates for a possible retrial. a consume ever group is urging state regulators to impose a $163 million fine on pg&e. it stems from the deadly 2010 explosion and fire in san bruno caused by pg&e gas pipeline. investigators say flawed recordkeeping contributed to that disaster. the consumer group says pg&e still doesn't have comprehensive records for pressure tests on about 1,000 miles of pipeline. self-driving cars have to follow new regulations before hitting california roads. first, a licensed driver must be in the car at all times. also, manufacturers can't sell the cars. they must lease them. the owners will have to go through special training. google is unwith of the big driving forces behind self- driving -- is one of the big driving forces behind self- driving vehicles and said they are disappointed saying the dmv is putting too many limits on the cars. the countdown wind down toward the nationwide opening of the new "star wars" movie. some theaters are screening the six previous movies before the big event. this is hacienda crossing at dublin. the "star wars" marathon started there at 4 a.m. kiet do is live at the tech museum in downtown san jose site of a special screening that's one of a kind in all of craft. got some company? where's the data? how --assure us that we're safe. that's all. that's all we're asking. >> reporter: tce is a carcinogen known to cause cancer. when found in soil under a home, tce vapors can creep through the foundation and seep into a house building up in dangerous concentrations. >> are we breathing in it?
