Reporter the boeing 777 considered one of the worlds safest aircraft carried 227 passengers and 12 crew. Three were americans, including an infant. Cbs news aviation and Safety Consultant captain Chesley Sullenberger says its very unusual for the triple 7 to crash midflight. Only a small percentage of accidents happens in the cruise portion of the flight. Most accidents happen in the landing or the takeoff portion. Reporter investigators are looking into two names on the passenger list that match passports stolen in thailand. But Authorities Say its too early to draw any conclusions about why the flight disappeared. Alison harmelin for cbs news, new york. At least one of the passengers on board that flight was from texas. In 18 years, the 777 never had a serious incident until last summer when an asiana airliner undershot the runway at San FranciscoInternational Airport crashing and leaving three dead. Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was flying in the safest part of the flight when it disappeared. It was cruising at altitude in good weather. Even if the pilots arent talking, the systems in the airplane are sending signals out to the ground through the satellites back to the company so they know how its operating. So something had to catastrophically happen to stop all of the electricity in the area at one time. They would have no warning if it was a explosive device. It tend to look more and more that way. Reporter two passengers on the flight were traveling on passports stolen in austria and italy two years ago. The u. S. Government says it will now use terrorism and criminal databases to check all the names on the passenger list. This is somewhat similar at least initially to the air france situation where they were in cruise flight and then they suddenly lost control of the airplane. Reporter in the case of the air france airbus a300 crash in 2009, investigators determined that ice crystals distorted air speed readings causing the 777s autopilot to disengage and the plane stalled. Investigators blamed the crew for failing to regain control and the plane crashed into the south atlantic killing all 228 aboard. Captain dick dean says if terrorism is involved terrorists would have had to pass inspections at kuala lumpur International Airport. I understand that kuala lumpur has good inspection. But there again, you know, if they have a passport and they match the picture on the passport, it would be hard to do anything about it. Reporter in San Francisco, don knapp, kpix 5. Tomorrow afternoon the potential of showers lingers tomorrow evening into monday morning. Tomorrow well see clouds increase under the influence of a low. This is what it looks like at sunrise tomorrow. Most of the day tomorrow clouds, clouds, clouds. And then by sunset, we might get a peek or two at, you know, a little bit of, you know, nice look at the sun for the first time tomorrow but you see the showers are mostly up in the north bay. Nevertheless in ukiah tomorrow you will get some rain tomorrow afternoon. But as you head south to rohnert park, not much. In the extended forecast, we increase clouds tomorrow. That will lead to a chance of sprinkles in the north bay. That chance of showers overspreads the rest of the bay area by sunday night and monday morning. Later on monday we clear out. Watch what happens. Thursday, friday and the saturday the numbers climb to near 80 degrees. If that isnt a season turner, i dont know what.
