future. on highway 1 near pacifica, devon, kpix 5. a crash killed a man today in pleasant hill. it happened on taylor boulevard north of withers avenue. the chp says a woman lost control of a toyota mini van, veered to the left and hit a lexus, the impact partially ejected a passenger from the lexus, even though he was wearing a seat belt. he died from head trauma. two other people in the lexus were hurt. in neighboring walnut creek one intersection has seen dozen of serious crashes over several years. kpix 5 is at the spot on ignacio valley road where there have been lots of wrecks. hey brian, of all of the accidents in recent years, 8% of them happen at this busy intersection. and this is not the only trouble spot here. ignacio valley road, the busiest and most dangerous road. >> traffic gets really going. >> a study produced for the apple law firm and shared with the bay area news group looks at the 800 plus accidents in walnut creek from 2010 to 2015. 65 of those happen at the intersection of ignacio valley and oak grove. >> i have pulled my share of cars out of this particular intersection. >> tow truck driver russell says he's had close calls at this intersection. >> someone, excessive speed, not paying attention, actually crashed into the car that i was getting ready to load up. >> the intersection is the first major traffic stop coming down a hill for drivers traveling into walnut creek from concord and pittsburgh. many drivers use ignacio valley as a shortcut between east county and highway 24. >> i try to avoid this intersection and use the backroads because it gets so congested here. the study finds of the 12 most dangerous intersections in walnut creek, five of them were along ignacio valley road. including ignacio valley and san carlos drive which recorded 42 injury accidents. drivers blame high traffic volume, speed, and distracted driving. >> i've even watched people eating cereal while they're driving. okay. you know, i get it. you're hungry, but pull over okay. >> elsewhere in the city, tray boulevard and cantalero drive reported more accidents. >> last week i had to slam on the brakes because they didn't see me. >> she has had many close calls. >> i'm angry, i can't afford to get hit by a car. >> reporter: the report identified hot spots. it does not offer solutions and we don't know if the city of walnut creek has plans to address these intersections. live in walnut creek, i'm da lynn, kpix 5. a fast moving brush fire is burning close to homes in a san bernardino neighborhood. it's charred more than 100- acres w. hot and dry weather the flames are spreading quickly. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. so far no homes have been damaged. meanwhile residents in mariposa county who were forced to evacuate because of a wild fire returning home to find their belongings blackened and their houses destroyed. evacuation orders have been lifted for mariposa, a small town devastated by the debt detwiler fire. it's burned 70,000-acres since it broke out last weekend. destroying 140 structures. including 60 homes. 1500 buildings are threatened. cal fire says one of the biggest concerns right now, dangerous ash pots. >> if a tree burns and the stump is under ground where the roots are, that can burn under ground. but it can be a three or four foot deep ash pot that's very hot. and they're around the homes and things like that. we don't want to let people on their property and have them fall into one of those. >> the detwiler fire is 30% contained now. crews contained two separate brush fires off skyline boulevard in the peninsula. they broke autojust south of page mill road about a mile southwest of portollo valley. they only burned an acre total. fire crews say if it had been windier up there, things could have been much worse. another warm weekend as we look live toward the east bay. nothing but blue out there. plenty of warm weather as well in the east bay, warm weather ushered along by high pressure billing in over southern california. strong high, warm temps, it'll stay that way through tomorrow. livermore ghat up to 101. concord 100 degrees. oakland, 82. and san jose 92 degrees. and it's not going the change too much. while we don't have red flag warnings posted in the bay area, there are warnings posted in the sierra for much of tomorrow because of a thunderstorm threat. dry lightning could spark fires with the high temps and low humidity, that could be bad news. and outflow from thunderstorms could produce winds up to 50 miles per hour. so fire threat remains throughout california. but there are red flag warnings specifically posted for the sierra as for what happens for us, we'll have that in the forecast in a few minutes. muni riders should expect to see station closures starting this weekend. the agency is testing its new light rail vehicles. technicians are checking for vibrations on the tracks, electronic sensors are logging how smoothly the cars move above and below ground. >> we're at the point now, as i said, we're in the home stretch for testing. so we didn't have enough time to stay on our schedule with the typical two hour night window. so this is the big weekend for testing the train control system. >> the stations closed starting today. include muni service between montgomery and west portal stations. muni service between west portal and montgomery stations will be closed on weekends. bus shuttles will operate between saint francis circles. and embarkadero and church. a thorn in the plan for this weekend. a live look over the golden gate bridge, everything is fine now. but tomorrow morning runners will take over the bridge for the san francisco marathon. the golden gate bridge is one of the many san francisco landmarks runners will see on the route. 27,000 competitors are expected to take part. even more people will be watching along the sidelines. kpix 5 reporter emily turner on how officials are keeping everybody safe. >> if your sunday plans have you crossing the golden gate that morning, you might want to think again. it's the san francisco marathon. and the bridge belongs to runners. not cars for a few hours. >> we are encouraging people to change your plans if you're thinking about traveling northbound on sunday. leave way earlier or after the race -- after it's reopened. if you're thinking about traveling around. we encourage people to use lift. >> road closures begin at midnight from the embarkdero start line and stretching out. the full shut down is from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. there will be no northbound traffic. and reduced lanes southbound. it's the first time this has been done for the race. and local law enforcement, race be safe than icials agree, sorry. >> you're trying to control the traffic. we've seen in the past what's happened in the uk, they've been using vehicles as weapons and so, you know, they're going to take all the necessary precautions to try to avoid any vehicle traffic whatsoever if they feel that's the appropriate thing to do to eliminate that part of the threat. >> kpix 5 security expert jeff harp says those car driven terror attacks we've seen abroad are less likely with the closure. and southbound traffic will be so backed up a car likely couldn't drive fast enough to do much damage. runners say this closure gives them the peace of mind they're going to need to tackle the race itself. >> i'm scared of the hills. once we cross the golden gate bridge, it's uphill all the way to golden gate with a preview of what to expect, katie? >> reporter: juliette, tomorrow's game is expected to be a near sell out crowd. but because it's not a 49ers game, that means the theme park right next door, great america, will still be open. the 49ers made a deal with the theme park a few years ago on game days great america would close meaning fans could use the parking lot and after the game police would allow cars to go the wrong way on great america parkway to get traffic on to the freeway faster. because great america is staying open, none of that can happen meaning traffic could be reminiscent of the first 49ers game at levi. >> now they closed the roads. they're having all these games here and stuff. it's ridiculous. >> a full staff of police from santa clara police department as well as the highway patrol will be on hand to help not just with traffic but also security. i spoke with the santa clara police department a little earlier today. they said they've been working with federal intelligence officers, especially in light of the manchester bombing at the arianna grande concert back in may. so far they've not heard of any credible threats to the soccer game. but of business wants it gone. plus one bay area community is being asked to keep an eye on their bank account. the rash of mail robberies that could leave some resident's information at risk. after a rash of mail truck break- ins. hundreds of residents in san jose are being told to check their bank accounts after a rash of mail truck break-ins. they want to make sure there's no activity linked to the stolen mail. investigators say the mail trucks were broken into, back- to-back days last week in willow glen while the carriers were delivering letters by hand. the post office sent warning letters to 350 homes urging customers to keep a close eye on bank statements. >> living in an area like willow glen, there's an expectation of security. especially when it comes to something like your mail. i think having that breech in the neighborhood is kind of a little bit scary and a little shocking. >> police say they're still investigating in the robberies are the work of one person or a group. a man who police say sped away from a dui check point is under arrest in santa rosa. the suspect was waiting in line at the check point last night on morgan street and then drove off and led police on a chase. ultimately he crashed into an exit gate at a parking garage. then he tried to run away, officers caught up and he's facing several charges including dui. it's a common sight at parks. sand boxes next to the jungle gym and monkey bars but san francisco is phasing them out. and christin ayers explains it's all because of a hidden danger. >> reporter: these children are doing something kids in san francisco won't be able to do at local parks for long. playing in a sand box. >> it was disappointing to hear that sand is not going to be an option given how popular it is at every playground i've been to. >> there are 72 playgrounds in san francisco. a small number of them have sand. and pretty soon, none of them will. >> we often time face the issue such as sharp objects, broken glass, even cat feces. in our sand boxes throughout our playground. >> the city says sand boxes have become safety hazards. back in 2015 vandals trashed delores park's playground leaving dozens of broken bottles in the sand. they made a choice to phase out all of the city's sand boxes. mountain lake park reopened last month sand-free. >> i do like not having sand. >> panhandle playground is francisco, 75. and oakland, 82 degrees. morgan hill at 94. and in terms of where we are now, concord has 98. oakland 82. in san francisco, 75. san jose is at 87 degrees. still warm, 80s in the south bay, high atop the west coast, high pressure that's built into the south land. the strong high will keep in warm temperatures and may even produce a chance of thunderstorms. it will be building in the sierra tomorrow afternoon. future cast shows plenty of low clouds packing the shore line tonight and for the marathon tomorrow. should start out with some low clouds by the shore line and lining the bay. but they'll pop fairly quickly to give you sunny conditions and temperatures will be very mild for that run. so it'll cool a little bit inland. it'll still be in the low 90s though. and at the shore line, we'll continue distinctly cool, 60s, and clouds at the beach. let's sum this up, highs in the 90s plus. patchy low clouds night and morning. mild temperatures inland return by monday. points to the importance of redistricting reform. new details at this hour on the death of actor john herd, best known for his role in the home alone movies. he was found dead in a paulo alto hotel room. we learned that earlier this week, representatives for herd told tmz that the actor under went minor back surgery at stanford medical center and he planned to stay at the hotel during his recovery. the medical examiner is investigating the death. authorities say it's not considered suspicious. john herd was 71 years old. 58-year-old man from fresno is being hail add hero this evening, he smashed a chair over an armed man who was trying to rob a starbucks. and the entire thing was captured on surveillance video. reporter patrick nelson has the story. >> this is 58-year-old craig jerry. enjoying his starbucks order and working on an ipad at 5:30 at the starbucks store on golden state near highway 99 in . suddenly, a man holding a yellow bag wearing a transformers mask flashes by and heads to the register. jerry watches as the man threatens the clerk with a fake gun and eventually a buck knife demanding money. police investigators say the man in the mask is 30-year-old ryan michael flores. and what flores doesn't realize is craig jerry made up his mind with a chair in hand, he plans to stop the robbery attempt. jerry hits flores from behind and a fight ensues. investigators say jerry was stabbed in the neck during the struggle but managed to wrestle away the knife and stab flores several times. flores was flee the store and was later arrested by police. >> there's probably not very many people in america that would do what craig jerry did last night. that was incredibly heroic. and it is the way i think most people would think they would respond but may not have the courage to respond. >> this video is now making national headlines. and jerry is being touted a hero locally and on social media but police leaders say getting involved like this was was patrick nelson reporting. the robber is in the hospital recovering. he is facing armed robbery and assault charges. well, excessive drinking is being blamed for sending 90 people to the hospital brought it to their attention. if you live in the south bay you might see extra cash coming in soon. the bay area water company is being called out for over charging customers. they denied they intentionally double billed customers but they have agreed to refund an average of $5.70 to every one of its 220,000 ride payers. it happened after changing billing methods. but customers say that's not a good enough answer. >> they're going to over charge us. they should let us know. and reimburse us. they should send us a note or letter. and let us know, you know, what's going on. why they over charged us. if it was a mistake. then that's okay. but if they're being dishonest, that's something different. >> they're set to hold a hearing to see if consumers are owed more money. seniors will soon have to pay eight times the usual price for a lifetime pass to our national parks. it used to cost $10. next month it will be $80. if you're on a fixed budget you can get an annual senior pass that will let you visit any park for one year at the discounted rate of $20. seniors who have limited passes and lifetime passes don't have to worry. they will still work. well, if you've seen them, you've probably smelled them too. the number of skunks in the bay area is on the rise. emily turner shows us. >> luckily, for sonya who is fostering these two, the babies rarely spray. which is important, because the entire wild care staff and its volunteers have had to step up to the plate this year. >> it's amazing. we're actually having a major boom of skunks this year. we're seeing it at wild care. i suspect it's consistent across the bay area. >> spokesperson alison says wild care usually gets 40 to 60 skunks a year. all ready this year, they've passed that total with 75. and no sign of stopping. she's fostering five. and with that many skunks marooned or orphaned, everyone plays a part in raising them. >> i have them old enough so they can spray. but that hasn't happened yet. and they don't know me per se, but they understand the routine. they know when i'm coming and i open the cage they're used to associating that habit with eating. >> the spike was caused by the wet winter. that made skunks food source thrive. while the species is infamous for their defense mechanism, wild care says they make great neighbors. >> the things that dig through your lawn and eat your flowers, your skunk friend is eating those things. and the rats and the mice that run through your yard. if you have a skunk in the yard or the neighborhood he's doing a really good service for you. >> but when they're rescued this young, they start out on formula and get fed every three hours and then move to real food when they're this size. eventually wild care teaches them to forage before future. on highway 1 near pacifica, devon, kpix 5. a crash killed a man today in pleasant hill. it happened on taylor boulevard north of withers avenue. the chp says a woman lost control of a toyota mini van, veered to the left and hit a lexus, the impact partially ejected a passenger from the lexus, even though he was wearing a seat belt. he died from head trauma. two other people in the lexus were hurt. in neighboring walnut creek one intersection has seen dozen of serious crashes over several years. kpix 5 is at the spot on ignacio valley road where there have been lots of wrecks. hey brian, of all of the accidents in recent years, 8% of them happen at this busy intersection. and this is not the only trouble spot here. ignacio valley road, the busiest and most dangerous road. >> traffic gets really going. >> a study produced for the apple law firm and shared with the bay area news group looks at the 800 plus accidents in walnut creek from 2010 to 2015. 65 of those happen at the intersection of ignacio valley and oak grove. >> i have pulled my share of cars out of this particular intersection. >> tow truck driver russell says he's had close calls at this intersection. >> someone, excessive speed, not paying attention, actually crashed into the car that i was getting ready to load up. >> the intersection is the first major traffic stop coming down a hill for drivers traveling into walnut creek from concord and pittsburgh. many drivers use ignacio valley as a shortcut between east county and highway 24. >> i try to avoid this intersection and use the backroads because it gets so congested here. the study finds of the 12 most dangerous intersections in walnut creek, five of them were along ignacio valley road. including ignacio valley and san carlos drive which recorded 42 injury accidents. drivers blame high traffic volume, speed, and distracted driving. >> i've even watched people eating cereal while they're driving. okay. you know, i get it. you're hungry, but pull over okay. >> elsewhere in the city, tray boulevard and cantalero drive reported more accidents. >> last week i had to slam on the brakes because they didn't see me. >> she has had many close calls. >> i'm angry, i can't afford to get hit by a car. >> reporter: the report identified hot spots. it does not offer solutions and we don't know if the city of walnut creek has plans to address these intersections. live in walnut creek, i'm da lynn, kpix 5. a fast moving brush fire is burning close to homes in a san bernardino neighborhood. it's charred more than 100- acres w. hot and dry weather the flames are spreading quickly. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. so far no homes have been damaged. meanwhile residents in mariposa county who were forced to evacuate because of a wild fire returning home to find their belongings blackened and their houses destroyed. evacuation orders have been lifted for mariposa, a small town devastated by the debt detwiler fire. it's burned 70,000-acres since it broke out last weekend. destroying 140 structures. including 60 homes. 1500 buildings are threatened. cal fire says one of the biggest concerns right now, dangerous ash pots. >> if a tree burns and the stump is under ground where the roots are, that can burn under ground. but it can be a three or four foot deep ash pot that's very hot. and they're around the homes and things like that. we don't want to let people on their property and have them fall into one of those. >> the detwiler fire is 30% contained now. crews contained two separate brush fires off skyline boulevard in the peninsula. they broke autojust south of page mill road about a mile southwest of portollo valley. they only burned an acre total. fire crews say if it had been windier up there, things could have been much worse. another warm weekend as we look live toward the east bay. nothing but blue out there. plenty of warm weather as well in the east bay, warm weather ushered along by high pressure billing in over southern california. strong high, warm temps, it'll stay that way through tomorrow. livermore ghat up to 101. concord 100 degrees. oakland, 82. and san jose 92 degrees. and it's not going the change too much. while we don't have red flag warnings posted in the bay area, there are warnings posted in the sierra for much of tomorrow because of a thunderstorm threat. dry lightning could spark fires with the high temps and low humidity, that could be bad news. and outflow from thunderstorms could produce winds up to 50 miles per hour. so fire threat remains throughout california. but there are red flag warnings specifically posted for the sierra as for what happens for us, we'll have that in the forecast in a few minutes. muni riders should expect to see station closures starting this weekend. the agency is testing its new light rail vehicles. technicians are checking for vibrations on the tracks, electronic sensors are logging how smoothly the cars move above and below ground. >> we're at the point now, as i said, we're in the home stretch for testing. so we didn't have enough time to stay on our schedule with the typical two hour night window. so this is the big weekend for testing the train control system. >> the stations closed starting today. include muni service between montgomery and west portal stations. muni service between west portal and montgomery stations will be closed on weekends. bus shuttles will operate between saint francis circles. and embarkadero and church. a thorn in the plan for this weekend. a live look over the golden gate bridge, everything is fine now. but tomorrow morning runners will take over the bridge for the san francisco marathon. the golden gate bridge is one of the many san francisco landmarks runners will see on the route. 27,000 competitors are expected to take part. even more people will be watching along the sidelines. kpix 5 reporter emily turner on how officials are keeping everybody safe. >> if your sunday plans have you crossing the golden gate that morning, you might want to think again. it's the san francisco marathon. and the bridge belongs to runners. not cars for a few hours. >> we are encouraging people to change your plans if you're thinking about traveling northbound on sunday. leave way earlier or after the race -- after it's reopened. if you're thinking about traveling around. we encourage people to use lift. >> road closures begin at midnight from the embarkdero start line and stretching out. the full shut down is from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. there will be no northbound traffic. and reduced lanes southbound. it's the first time this has been done for the race. and local law enforcement, race be safe than icials agree, sorry. >> you're trying to control the traffic. we've seen in the past what's happened in the uk, they've been using vehicles as weapons and so, you know, they're going to take all the necessary precautions to try to avoid any vehicle traffic whatsoever if they feel that's the appropriate thing to do to eliminate that part of the threat. >> kpix 5 security expert jeff harp says those car driven terror attacks we've seen abroad are less likely with the closure. and southbound traffic will be so backed up a car likely couldn't drive fast enough to do much damage. runners say this closure gives them the peace of mind they're going to need to tackle the race itself. >> i'm scared of the hills. once we cross the golden gate bridge, it's uphill all the way to golden gate with a preview of what to expect, katie? >> reporter: juliette, tomorrow's game is expected to be a near sell out crowd. but because it's not a 49ers game, that means the theme park right next door, great america, will still be open. the 49ers made a deal with the theme park a few years ago on game days great america would close meaning fans could use the parking lot and after the game police would allow cars to go the wrong way on great america parkway to get traffic on to the freeway faster. because great america is staying open, none of that can happen meaning traffic could be reminiscent of the first 49ers game at levi. >> now they closed the roads. they're having all these games here and stuff. it's ridiculous. >> a full staff of police from santa clara police department as well as the highway patrol will be on hand to help not just with traffic but also security. i spoke with the santa clara police department a little earlier today. they said they've been working with federal intelligence officers, especially in light of the manchester bombing at the arianna grande concert back in may. so far they've not heard of any credible threats to the soccer game. but of course they're going to be on alert. in santa clara, katie neilson, kpix 5. organizers say the best way to get to levi stadium tomorrow is by taking the vta light rail. coming up, there's a hidden danger at bay area a parks, tonight the safety hazards, the changes coming, and why some parents don't want it fixed. plus a beloved bay area taco truck is being asked to close up shop. why a nearby business wants it gone. plus one bay area community is being asked to keep an eye on their bank account. the rash of mail robberies that could leave some resident's information at risk. after a rash of mail truck break- ins. hundreds of residents in san jose are being told to check their bank accounts after a rash of mail truck break-ins. they want to make sure there's no activity linked to the stolen mail. investigators say the mail trucks were broken into, back- to-back days last week in willow glen while the carriers were delivering letters by hand. the post office sent warning letters to 350 homes urging customers to keep a close eye on bank statements. >> living in an area like willow glen, there's an expectation of security. especially when it comes to something like your mail. i think having that breech in the neighborhood is kind of a little bit scary and a little shocking. >> police say they're still investigating in the robberies are the work of one person or a group. a man who police say sped away from a dui check point is under arrest in santa rosa. the suspect was waiting in line at the check point last night on morgan street and then drove off and led police on a chase. ultimately he crashed into an exit gate at a parking garage. then he tried to run away, officers caught up and he's facing several charges including dui. it's a common sight at parks. sand boxes next to the jungle gym and monkey bars but san francisco is phasing them out. and christin ayers explains it's all because of a hidden danger. >> reporter: these children are doing something kids in san francisco won't be able to do at local parks for long. playing in a sand box. >> it was disappointing to hear that sand is not going to be an option given how popular it is at every playground i've been to. >> there are 72 playgrounds in san francisco. a small number of them have sand. and pretty soon, none of them will. >> we often time face the issue such as sharp objects, broken glass, even cat feces. in our sand boxes throughout our playground. >> the city says sand boxes have become safety hazards. back in 2015 vandals trashed delores park's playground leaving dozens of broken bottles in the sand. they made a choice to phase out all of the city's sand boxes. mountain lake park reopened last month sand-free. >> i do like not having sand. >> panhandle playground is next. >> my older son started crying and saying he wanted sand. >> jennifer hine a teacher and mother of two has read literature showing sand provides an educational out let. >> she and james of the council say the recreation and parks department kept the public out of the loop when they settled on a sand ban. they worry officials are focused on keeping costs low instead of keeping kids happy. readings. warmed up very nicely. there will be a little change as we head into the workweek. but for tomorrow, not a huge change between tomorrow and what we had today. we're now looking south. actually we're looking east from sutro cam. you'll see fairly clear skies t bay beyond. and the hills raised by the hayward fault in the distance. concord hit 100 degrees. livermore 101. san francisco, 75. and oakland, 82 degrees. morgan hill at 94. and in terms of where we are now, concord has 98. oakland 82. in san francisco, 75. san jose is at 87 degrees. still warm, 80s in the south bay, high atop the west coast, high pressure that's built into the south land. the strong high will keep in warm temperatures and may even produce a chance of thunderstorms. it will be building in the sierra tomorrow afternoon. future cast shows plenty of low clouds packing the shore line tonight and for the marathon tomorrow. should start out with some low clouds by the shore line and lining the bay. but they'll pop fairly quickly to give you sunny conditions and temperatures will be very mild for that run. so it'll cool a little bit inland. it'll still be in the low 90s though. and at the shore line, we'll continue distinctly cool, 60s, and clouds at the beach. let's sum this up, highs in the 90s plus. patchy low clouds night and morning. mild temperatures inland return by monday. numbers will be back in the 80s tuesday at the latest. giants taking on the padres tomorrow under clear skies and 69 degrees. and the marathon is tomorrow as we've been rhapsodizing about in the news cast. 57 degrees. the outside of the race a bit warmer toward the end, the california state fair in sacramento, 101. and yet if you want to cool off, stern grove festival is always a good place. redding is up to 107 tomorrow. loathe, a lake tahoe a few clouds. 106 at fresno. lows in the bay areas. daytime highs close to average in san francisco. south bay will still be warm. temperatures in the mid 80s in some places to the low 90s. 91 in morgan hill. over in the east bay, cooler than it was today. low 90s instead of 100. in the north bay, nice summer- like, 81 in san rafael. and finally still smoking up in ukiah and lakeport and clearlake, temperatures about 100 degrees. extended forecast, we'll ease off the high temperatures monday, tuesday, wednesday, we'll be in the 80s inland. and the mid to upper 70s around the bay. next weekend as was the case last weekend, and has been the case this weekend, we're cooling off a bit. then warming up toward the weekend. >> all right, points to the importance of redistricting reform. new details at this hour on the death of actor john herd, best known for his role in the home alone movies. he was found dead in a paulo alto hotel room. we learned that earlier this week, representatives for herd told tmz that the actor under went minor back surgery at stanford medical center and he planned to stay at the hotel during his recovery. the medical examiner is investigating the death. authorities say it's not considered suspicious. john herd was 71 years old. 58-year-old man from fresno is being hail add hero this evening, he smashed a chair over an armed man who was trying to rob a starbucks. and the entire thing was captured on surveillance video. reporter patrick nelson has the story. >> this is 58-year-old craig jerry. enjoying his starbucks order and working on an ipad at 5:30 at the starbucks store on golden state near highway 99 in . suddenly, a man holding a yellow bag wearing a transformers mask flashes by and heads to the register. jerry watches as the man threatens the clerk with a fake gun and eventually a buck knife demanding money. police investigators say the man in the mask is 30-year-old ryan michael flores. and what flores doesn't realize is craig jerry made up his mind with a chair in hand, he plans to stop the robbery attempt. jerry hits flores from behind and a fight ensues. investigators say jerry was stabbed in the neck during the struggle but managed to wrestle away the knife and stab flores several times. flores was flee the store and was later arrested by police. >> there's probably not very many people in america that would do what craig jerry did last night. that was incredibly heroic. and it is the way i think most people would think they would respond but may not have the courage to respond. >> this video is now making national headlines. and jerry is being touted a hero locally and on social media but police leaders say getting involved like this was risky. and it could have had tragic consequences. >> it's not something we recommend. in this case, it was a good outcome. no one died as a result of this incident. but he very well could have. that intentionally double billed customers but they have agreed to refund an average of $5.70 to every one of its 220,000 ride payers. it happened after changing billing methods. but customers say that's not a good enough answer. >> they're going to over charge us. they should let us know. and reimburse us. they should send us a note or letter. and let us know, you know, what's going on. why they over charged us. if it was a mistake. then that's okay. but if they're being dishonest, that's something different. >> they're set to hold a hearing to see if consumers are owed more money. seniors will soon have to pay eight times the usual price for a lifetime pass to our national parks. it used to cost $10. next month it will be $80. if you're on a fixed budget you can get an annual senior pass that will let you visit any park for one year at the discounted rate of $20. seniors who have limited passes and lifetime passes don't have to worry. they will still work. well, if you've seen them, you've probably smelled them too. the number of skunks in the bay area is on the rise. emily turner shows us. >> luckily, for sonya who is fostering these two, the babies rarely spray. which is important, because the entire wild care staff and its volunteers have had to step up to the plate this year. >> it's amazing. we're actually having a major boom of skunks this year. we're seeing it at wild care. i suspect it's consistent across the bay area. >> spokesperson alison says wild care usually gets 40 to 60 skunks a year. all ready this year, they've passed that total with 75. and no sign of stopping. she's fostering five. and with that many skunks marooned or orphaned, everyone plays a part in raising them. >> i have them old enough so they can spray. but that hasn't happened yet. and they don't know me per se, but they understand the routine. they know when i'm coming and i open the cage they're used to associating that habit with eating. >> the spike was caused by the wet winter. that made skunks food source thrive. while the species is infamous for their defense mechanism, wild care says they make great neighbors. >> the things that dig through your lawn and eat your flowers, your skunk friend is eating those things. and the rats and the mice that run through your yard. if you have a skunk in the yard or the neighborhood he's doing a really good service for you. >> but when they're rescued this young, they start out on formula and get fed every three hours and then move to real food when they're this size. eventually wild care teaches them to forage before
