KPIX KPIX 5 News At 600PM July 20, 2017

You divert them to the new incident. Reporter further east on 140, the sign reads, all three evacuated. Unfortunately, at least one home on the property is no longer there. Only stone work and a water heat remember still standing. Theres a lot of homes in and around small roads tucked into the mountains, and so the challenge is protecting those. And the challenge is getting in there and starting to build line around the fire. Reporter and in the town of mariposa, this should be high season with parking lots and hotels packed with tourists headed for yosemite. Instead, the old gold rush town looks more like a ghost town. Theres a fire that started on sunday on the ridge. And then we got evacuated from that ranch and ended up staying at the best western and went to yosemite, went hiking, came back and that evening, we got evacuated from here. We couldnt come back to our hotel so we had to be taken down to fresno to get a hotel room. Reporter tonight the concern once again is keeping the towering flames and smoke from reducing mariposa to ash. The town of mariposa itself is kind of a western mother lode kind of town, so a lot of wood Frame Buildings and such. Reporter as we usually see on these fires in the afternoon, the fire activity kicked up in the past three minutes. We have seen this i will side catch fire and we see lots of crews go up there to try and stop those flames from coming down the hill. Earlier this afternoon we saw at least two passing dc10s on the ridgeline. It will be a long night out here in mariposa county. Tough fight. I mentioned the highway 140 is closed, the park is open. Did you have any problems getting to where you are tonight . There were multiple blocks that we had to get through and had to convince people to let us through to get to where we are right now. But the average person without a live truck could not get through here right now, allen. Thank you. From that wildfire, hanging over yosemite valley, you can see the haze above yosemite falls. The fire burning about 30 miles outside the National Park and nearly 50 miles from the valley. Heres a view of the smoke covering reno. Weather patterns sending the smoke and ash towards that city. Heres a satellite view of the detwiler fire. The National Weather service says the massive smoke can be seen as far as boise, idaho 500 miles away. Skydrone5 giving you a view of a reservoir in southern Santa Clara County. The Water District wants to build a massive new dam to add more water storage. Pacheco reservoir is over the pass. Kpix 5s devin fehely is live with a closer look at proposed expansion. Devin. Reporter yeah. This project would be massive in its size and scale. If it gets built, it would be nearly as big as all the existing reservoirs in the county combined. And it has an equally big price tag, bumping up nearly 1 billion. The Water District hopes the state will pay for part of it. Expanding the existing pacheco reservoir would nearly double the Water District Storage Capacity something desperately needed after years of drought. We have had probably one of the most severe droughts on record. 2014, 2015 and 2016 were tough. Reporter in the hills above gilroy the pacheco reservoir take a decade and cost about 800 million. Having to call for the very deep water use reductions and having the anxiety of consumers everywhere as to the adequacy of water supplies, is something we dont want to repeat again. Reporter after a wet winter in which local reservoirs filled and spilled over, there is still a dire need the Water District says for increased Storage Capacity. And if it gets the green light, the reservoir would hold 140,000acre feet of water enough in theory to supply nearly 300,000 homes for a year. Those who plan for water realize we have to deal with not only the wet conditions but also the very dry. Reporter now, the Water District would like the state to basically split the cost with them. They will apply for the state funds next month. They should know the results of that by next year. Along pacheco pass, devin fehely, kpix 5. A developing story now. A short time ago chopper 5 was over the scene of a deadly driveby shooting in hayward. A man pushing a baby in that stroller was shot and killed. Shots were fired at 3 p. M. On willow near meekland avenue. Christin ayers has the latest on the shooting and that babys condition. Reporter authorities are still out here investigating. As you said that shooting happening around 3 00 this afternoon. Authorities are investigating whether it was targeted. As you said, a father was shot as he was walking and pushing his newborn baby just three months old along this block earlier today. Neighbors told me that first they heard the gunshots, several of them, then they heard the screeching of tires. They believe this was a drive by shooting. I spoke to some of the neighbors out here today. They said this isnt the best area, but obviously, Something Like this happening is unprecedented in this area. It is shocking to people out here today. Authorities are telling us they are mapping the crime scene and also speaking to witnesses out here today. They say witnesses are eager to help out considering the circumstances of this case knowing that this happened with a baby that could have been caught in the crossfire. The baby was not injured. Were hearing that that child is with Alameda County. Authorities are working on reuniting the baby with the family with the rest of the family. And they also tell me because of the concerns that this could potentially have been targeted, that they are also looking at making sure that the family is safe, that they wont be retaliated upon, as well. Just a few moments ago, we saw some relatives of the family out here who will be speaking to investigators later on. They claimed that they were sisters of the young man who was shot. Again that man dead tonight. The 3monthold baby whose stroller he was pushing, his child we hear, is safe tonight in Alameda County Sheriffs Department custody. Reporting live in hayward, christin ayers, kpix 5. The Santa Clara County jail remains on lockdown this evening. That is after four inmates overdosed on an unknown drug. The inmates were taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment. The Bay Area News Group reports that two of the inmates are being discharged back to the jail. The others are conscious and expected to recover. This is the latest of a string of issues in the jail. A north Bay High School district wants to make campus upgrades. They are proposing revamp to five high schools including tamalpais, redwood and sir francis drake. Kpix 5s emily turner live with how much these renovations could cost taxpayers. Reporter veronica, are you ready for some sticker shock . Were talking about 450 million at least thats the possibility. Nothing set in stone at this point. Its the beginning of the process. But you can imagine taxpayers are a little bit concerned. Tamalpais unified has some of the best schools in the state and to keep it that way, the district says its going to cost more, possibly hundreds of millions of more. We are bursting at the seams. We have teachers sharing classrooms. We have facilities that are really being pushed to their limit. And thats going to affect the quality of teaching that we are able to deliver. Reporter but the problem is, the wish list to make that happen could cost up to 450 million. And the district is looking at a bond measure or a parcel tax essentially asking the community to foot that bill. They havent considered the taxpayers. The only people they considered is stakeholders in this process, students, parents, teachers and administrators. Those are on the only people who care about this. Reporter the district says it expects a 20 increase in enrollment over the next five years something they cant sustain without more classrooms and facilities. But we looked at where some of it would go. 19million for parking improvements. 17 of which would go to creating a possible parking structure at tam. 24million to ballfields and courts which doesnt include the almost 50 million for physical education improvements. The board acknowledges its a lot and says none of it is set in stone but even in part, it will be a tough sell to taxpayers. We dont relish the idea of going out and doing a capital campaign. But we its our responsibility to deliver high quality education and we are not getting additional funding for each additional student that comes through our door. We are a Community Funded district. We are looking for resources from the state. But those are limited. And so were between a rock and a hard place. Too much its a lot of money to spend on these high schools. And theyre Great Schools already. This sounds like a wish list, not like a budget. Reporter so over the next two months, the School District will be vetting basically that wish list. And then coming up with what it is thats absolutely necessary that needs to be done and going from there. In the meantime they have already agreed to hire a consultant to look into the possibility of this bond measure or a parcel tax. Reporting live in larkspur, emily turner, kpix 5. Today Marin General Hospital announced its biggest donation ever. A total of 21 million was given to help pay for its new wing and parking garage. Today the final beam was hoisted on the new facility. The total project is estimated to cost 534 million. It is scheduled to open in 2020. A major step forward for car sharing programs in San Francisco. They will soon be getting more designated parking spots. So that means you will be seeing a lot more of these around the city. Last night the mta board of directors approved a permit program to create 1,000 parking spots for shared vehicles only. They say this move should help with the shortage of parking. Kind of intuitively the idea of using Parking Spaces to park car share vehicles may actually help folks afford fewer cars and get around the city more affordably and relieve pressure on parking. Theres no fixed timeline on when those spots will be converted. But any curb areas that are not metered will be fair game. An apartment in flames just hours after the tenants moved out. And it may have actually been an act of revenge. Kpix 5s Susie Steimle with a history of trouble at that one unit and the tenants who had just moved out. Reporter an overnight fire on Ygnacio Valley road in walnut creek forced 8 people from their homes but neighbors say it isnt the fire that has them on edge but, rather, the apartment it started in. This has been going on a while. Reporter one neighbor who didnt want to be on camera tells us the unit where the fire started has a history of emergency calls. Theres been police here a lot, every couple of days. Reporter Police Records confirmed that. Officers have been called to unit 34 15 times in the past three years. 7 were during the last three weeks. I deemed them as dangerous to me. Reporter in the daylight, crews worked around massive piles of clothing left behind. The fire marshal confirms the People Living in the unit that caught fire were moving out yesterday. I do have fire investigators looking into the cause of the fire. I know that neighbors are all saying it was arson. We are going through our process to nail down exactly what the cause was. Reporter those evacuated will be able to return home but some worry this is just a case of retaliation. I think they were being evict. It may not be over yet because if they did start it, their vindictiveness may not be over. Reporter Police Records indicate most of the calls were about disturbances and some noise complaints. But neighbors say they have called in themselves. The displaced people from thinks complex, most should be able to move back in shortly. Susie steimle, kpix 5. The city is trying to sell it on edenvale avenue. Its even lowered the asking price, believe it or not. Kpix 5s kiet do explains why the city is so motivated to off load the old hotel. Reporter the first red flag about the hayes mansion deal came two days after the buyer signed the contract. The previous buyer, asha, promised to pay a Million Dollar deposit into an escrow account but the money never came through. It was disappointing. Its not unusual for real estate transactions to fall through and now we are just looking ahead to the future and excited to see what the market will bring. Reporter asha was set to pay 47 million, well above the asking price of 42 million. But on mon, the city put the hayes mansion back on the market on monday for a minimum bid of 36 million. At that price, the city says they can resolve all their debts related to the mansion and walk away. Going out at 36 million will allow to us retire all the debt and anything above and beyond would be extra for the city. Reporter when the hotel is sold it will be a relief to the city budget. It costs up to 6 million to keep it going. Its a gem of san jose, unique property and we are excited to see it go to a great buyer who will continue to operate its a hotel, potentially invest in the property and see it return to its glory. The onshore flow will continue as long as this ridge of High Pressure stays centered over Southern California which it will for the next couple of days. And an area of low pressure will stay up in the pacific northwest. Both of those in a strong southwest flow. Thats why we had cloud cover longer today and well have cloud cover pushing farther inland tonight and tomorrow night so the southwest flow will continue and cut into the highs, not allowing things to warm up. Well stay mainly in the 80s away from the water. Low cloud cover does return tonight. Afternoon temperatures staying very close to average. It will be warmer this weekend. The two warmest days again saturday and sunday but nothing resembling a heat wave. So tomorrow wildly comfortable livermore, concord, napa, santa rosa low to mid80s. San jose 80.
