before the chaos. berkeley police drew a line to keep pro-trump and anti-trump protestors separated, but it didn't last long. >> reporter: demonstrators have gone home. downtown berkeley, civic center park back to normal. but there were so many fights and bloody faces, we lost count. it was so chaotic, violent and dangerous. before the m80s, the fist fights and the rocks, there was actually a bit of order. berkeley police came in with a strategy. they confiscated weapons and formed a line between trump supporters and anti-trump protestors. that worked for the first hour. shortly after, people jumped over the police line to fight each other. (screaming and yelling). >> reporter: this trump supporter was the first casual of the day with bloodstreaming out of his face. >> well, they wanted to hit me with brass knuckles on a blind side. hit my twice. once when i was getting up. it's sad. >> reporter: then more fights broke out in front of officers in civic center park. police made some arrests. but the police strategy stopped working after both trump supporters and anti-trump protestors left the park to fight on the street. officers were outnumbered. they had to watch the fights from a distance. the dualing rallies grew to a large crowd of roughly 1,000 to 1500 people. and there were fights all over the place. >> are you okay? >> i'll be okay. >> what happened? >> i got pepper sprayed and hit with a bunch of sticks. >> reporter: aside from fighting, people threw m-80s, rocks and bottles at each other. some of the peaceful demonstrators left fearing for their own safety. >> there's a difference between free speech and free action. this is turning to action. >> reporter: a demonstrator brought these eggs out here. they were confiscated and from my observation, some of these folks did not come out here with the intention of having productive conversations with each other. they came out here ready for a fight and that's exactly what we saw, a lot of fights. ely police said earlier this afternoon they arrested about 15 people. i'm sure it's a lot more right now. >> what was it like being in the thick of the protests? >> reporter: it was dangerous for us. we had 4 cameras out here. some of us had helmets on. because people were throwing rocks, were throwing sticks. bottles. it was just very dangerous. after we had enough footage, we had to step back away. some photo journalists, from photographers were caught in the middle of it and got hurt. here's your video of the violence. you can see the anti-trump protestors clad in all black. the anger boiling over. chopper 5 captured fight after fight and what looks like teargas or pepper spraying being used. it's unclear what this was trop. at one point, protestors started a small fire and started rolling a big garbage bin around. anti-trump protestors smashed a skate board on top of a trump supporter's head. another -- all of this while police in riot gear looked on from the side lines. andre, you spoke with the trump supporters today. >> reporter: juliette, that's right. civic park here in berkeley once again belongs to the skate borders here in the afternoon. but earlier today, the proud boys sponsored the pro-trump rally. these -- there's almost a script of how thee rallies and counter protests go here in the city of berkeley. we asked the folks taking part if they were intentionally trying to provoke a reaction by bringing a pro-trump message and gathering to the heart of liberal berkeley. isn't that poking the bear to come here -- >> well, it is in a way, but we're not doing it to be gleeful about it or to deliberately upset people who are against us, but we have every right to be here. >> reporter: but you are going to upset people. >> that's their problem. you know, if they have a problem -- you know. they seem to be upset about a lot of things that are completely irrational. we're not -- we don't have an answer for that. if they want to hold a rally where i'm from, they're welcome to do it. we might have people come out and do a counter demonstration, but we're not going to stop them from their freedom of speech. >> reporter: we'll have much more here from civic park tonight on kpix 5 news at 11:00. kpix 5. we saw the same kind of violence last month. pro-trump and anti-trump protestors got into it at the same park in berkeley. faces bloodied, bodies bruised. in all, 10 people were arrested last month. officers at that protest confiscated a variety of objects. this time around, police put out a list of banned items in advance. that didn't stop people from bringing them anyway. you can see plenty of sticks, poles and flags. this is also a large folding knife. we're continuing to keep an eye on the situation in berkeley. in san francisco, people marched to demand president trump release his tax returns. they gathered in civic center plaza this afternoon and walked down market street to justin herman plaza. a giant balloon was on display showing a likeness of the president as a chicken. they want to know what debts he has in foreign countries. >> i have released mine. and i think he should release his. and i don't know why he hasn't. i mean, what's he hiding? i can't really of the oroville dam. it's considering three bids. the hope is to have the spill way fixed for november just in time for the next rainy season. a new sinkhole opened up in berkeley. it shut down the road and it's causing major traffic problems. no word on when the road might reopen. just a reminder that we live in earthquake country, a couple of rumblers went through the south county this morning. measured about a 2.9. about 40 minutes later, a 3.2 shook the same spot. they were small enough, so there were no reports of any damage. still to come, a gift from nfl great jerry rice stolen go beyond offering more money to passengers who are willing to give up their seats. that type of policy change was announced by delta earlier this week. baby goats took over san francisco's ferry building today. not everybody thought the kids should be there. >> animals' lives are their right. we have just begun to fight. >> reporter: who knew a petting zoo could be so controversial. >> animals are living, feeling individuals, the same as you or i do and they deserve the same respect. >> reporter: matt johnson is with the animal rights group: direct action everywhere. his organization protests the treatment of the animals at the petting zoo at san francisco's ferry building. >> these are animals that are raised on pasteur and are really humanely treated. >> reporter: for $5, adults or children got a chance to play with the baby goats. >> getting to come out here and hold the baby goats is probably one of the best things i've ever done. >> reporter: most of the goats in the petting zoo, which are almost all female, will end up on a dairy farm. this is a chance the males may be slaughtered for their meet. their goal was to get the message out: raising animals to eat is unhumane and unnecessary. in san francisco, devon, kpix 5. a man accused of stealing an auto graphed football from a charity auction is now under arrest. jerry rice -- the winning bid was $3,500. but the football then disappeared into the alleged thief's hands. it turned up -- the thief and the football -- in surveillance video you see there. he's now in police custody according to the charity princess piece. there's no word yet on whether the ball has been recovered. leafy greens are in short supply in bay area grocery stores. what's behind this lettuce shortage. >> reporter: if santa margarita. it's narrow and caltrans had a sign up saying heavy traffic on highway 58, which is not something you usually see on that road. that will be nice to see. the bay bridge and high clouds overrunning the bay area right now, all by way of setting the stage for rain tomorrow. actually showers. we're looking for about a 10th of an inch to a quarter of know an inch for the valley floors. easter does look wet, especially later in the day and especially in the central and north bay. south bay not so much. might get away with a little bit of rain. that low pressure that right now is right off shore from the oregon coastline will spin those clouds into the bay area by tomorrow morning. the rain not right at sunrise, a little bit later around 9:00 in the mortgage. some showers around the coastline early in the morning. showers for everybody else later in the day. by tomorrow evening, everybody will at least have gotten a little bit wet. the south bay escapes much of the up in flames as a fire ripped through an auto auction lot in fremont. flames rising from the iaa vehicle purchasing lot. it quickly hopped from car to car. firefighters had a hard time getting access to the lot because the company is closed today. when firefighters did get access to the scene, crews managed to contain the flames pretty quickly. nobody was hurt, but a whole section of cars was reduced to a melted mass of metal. the cause of the fire under investigation. let's check back in with da lin in berkeley. what is the latest now? >> reporter: juliette, things are back to normal here at civic center park. that's because most of the demonstrators have gone home. berkeley police came in with a pretty good strategy this morning. they confiscated all the weapons they saw and formed a every person's rights. >> reporter: i saw instigators from both sides, both the trump supporters group and the anti- trump group. and a lot of them didn't come here for constructive conversations. protestors took to the streets to demand that president trump reveal his tax returns. there were pretty clever sign there is and plenty of them. this one referring to the russian controversy and said stop putins off. the protest was part of a nation-wide effort scheduled today. similar rallies were held in several cities across the bay area today. >> as for president trump, he's spending easter weekend with his family in florida. mean while, his second in command is headed for the korean peninsula tonight. he is taking a 10-day trip to asia, which includes a stop in seoul. in south korea, the joint chiefs of staff say the north's launch ended in failure. it's not clear what kind of missile was involved. that missile test came hours after north korea rolled out hardware and troops to mark the birth of the country's founder. for the first time, they showed off intercontinental missiles that can be launched by land or sea. kim jong un inspected the parade of soldiers. a bomb killed refunds, but nearly 40 million people have yet to file. jill has tips if you're one of those. >> reporter: every year, about a quarter of americans wait until the bitter end to do their taxes. if you're getting a late start, clear your weekend schedule because the irs estimates it takes 16 hours to complete form 1040. only 4 hours for ez filers. there are overlooked resources that can help you out. taxpayers who earn $64,000 or less can use the irs free file software to prepare and file their federal taxes. additionally, the volunteer income tax assistance or vita program offers free tax help to people who generally make less than $54,000, those with disabilities, the elderly and limited-english speaking taxpayers who need assistance. in addition, the tax counseling for the elderly program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those 65 years of age and older. now, if you can't meet the tax deadline, don't fret. you can file for a 6-month extension with form 4868 by april 18th. those extensions have a major caveat. the irs gives you extra time to file but not to pay. you must estimate your tax liability and send uncle sam at least 90% of it to avoid a penalty. if you don't have the money on hand, don't hide. you can apply for a free extension to pay the bill. or use a credit card. but remember credit cards can be an expensive way to go because you pay fees.
