the ocean is claiming a ship. >> reporter: it's been a tourist attraction for generations and an icon of the santa cruz county coast. but now waters have turned the ship into a ship wreck. >> very sad day. >> reporter: crowds came out as to say their goodbyes. last year the ship broke in two but the days of floods are finishing it off. the ship turned into party platform is seeing its last days. >> it's sad to see that it's falling apart. but it's still there. >> reporter: sea cliff took a pounding from storm debris. this is perhaps the largest collection of logs you might ever see on a beach. there are literally hundreds if not thousands of them. big ones, small ones. trees that were toppled maybe years ago then brought here down by the rivers and the creeks and streams during the storms and then tossed on the beach by the huge waves. >> i think everybody should get together and get together and start cutting all this stuff out. haul it out of here. >> reporter: as if that's not enough, a huge sink hole opened up near the park entrance when an under ground culvert broke apart. lower sea cliff including the rv camping area will likely be closed to traffic for at least four weeks. len ramirez, kpix5. not only are the storms bad for the coast they're bad for business. king tides are proving to be a royal pain for restaurants. mira mar is closed to tourists today because of flooding. >> reporter: and a little farther inland, hail pelted this backyard. in mount diablo getting a pretty good dusting. chopper5 over the area. a decent amount of snow at 3,800 feet. here is campbell, san jose, los gatos you are next with light showers for milpita. we've seen a couple of showers up toward north hamilton in addition to what's going on around mount diablo. one flood warning continues for the bay area. mark west creek we still are seeing some flooding there. how about this for a stat. if it did not rain one drop in santa rosa from now until october we would still be above average for the water year. we've now seen 37-inches of rain at the sonoma county airport. we'll talk about any more rain in the sonoma airport. we're getting more information on the case of two mysterious deaths in berkeley. we first told you about this story at five -- at 5:00. two people were found dead on beacon street. the fire department has ruled out carbon -- carbon monoxide as a possible cause. >> we received a call from a person who said they discovered one of the persons inside deceased. and officers got here, and when they checked the premises they discovered there were two people. in addition to the two cats who also were deceased inside. >> reporter: hazmat and pg & e teams were also on the scene. now homicide detectives are searching that area for evidence. >> san some things from the officers. i think we have a lot of challenges ahead of us and this is not just a san francisco issue. this is an issue across the country. the community has really been quite vocal about some things they would like to see from the san francisco police department. >> reporter: san francisco is probably the most political city you're ever going to be in how are you going to handle it all. >> just how i've always handled it. politics are a part of this business. but i try to be above the politics and sometimes that lands you in a good place. sometimes it lands you in a pad place. some of the issues that are really complex, and issues that are going to be hard to get a handle on. the homeless issue and some of the other things that are happening. >> your stand on tasers. >> i support them. i support tasers. i think it's a good thing to protect officers. >> one of the new challenges facing the chief will be how and when to release police body camera videos like this one. which can both raise questions about police use of form and be disturbing to the public. >> the gate open. >> it's a part of what the public has asked for. and our policy is taken into consideration. >> but there's also political pressure in this town. they're going to want to see it right away. >> they do. and that's understandable. that's understandable. and one of the things we have to do to be consistent in our protocalls. as it stands right now we release them on a case by case basis. >> what was your take on the demonstrations? >> i think the city did a great job. a friend of mine sent me a picture of the protest this weekend and the comment she sent is your guys are doing a great job. >> reporter: considering the roller coaster nature of being a police chief in san francisco. >> you're going to rent or buy? >> right now i'm going to rent. i hope i can buy. hey. this city is, this city is real estate is at a premium. but it's a beautiful city. and now i'm very happy to be here. >> by all accounts from here in and in los angeles. what you saw just then is what you're getting in the new chief. level headed, confidence but not a grand stander but he's also not a politician and that's going to be a real test for him here in san francisco. in san francisco, phil matier. a lawyer is offering a new theory about the cause of the ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland. they have received a quote reliable scientific report that concludes the fire that killed 36 people last month started in an adjacent building. kpix5 has talked to someone who walked through that same adjacent building and said they saw little fire damage there. the oakland fire department is yet to release its official report on the cause. new at 6:00, another bay area city with too many people and not enough parking. >> palo alto is forced to find a new approach. the problem is in the city's second downtown. the business district around california avenue between el ka -- el camino and the caltrain tracks. >> reporter: a tug of war between the booming business and the people who live near by. it's those competing interests that the city of san francisco is trying to balance without putting improvements on a slow track. >> when it's raining it's a hassle. >> it's frustrating having to walk so far. and a lot of times when i've come to this area. and there's been parking so far away. that i just have chosen not to go to the place. >> reporter: in many ways the area along el camino real has become a victim of its success. >> a lot of those are single family homes i can see how it could be an issue for them. >> reporter: one of the solution social -- solution is to ask for a permit to park. most of those going to the residents. >> the restaurant business is thriving. >> reporter: not everyone is convinced that the city's plan will work. some say the answer is not more parking restrictions it is simply more parking. >> the city can do a better job by teenager skids off a rainy road. friends get caught in an avalanche. how they survived it and stayed calm after being buried in feet of snow. how a california town could ban pot all together. ,,,, the search for a car that plunged into the raging alameda creek. officials believe the 18-year- old driver went off niles county road on saturday morning. kpix5's juliet goodrich with the latest we're learning from that teenager. >> reporter: a very difficult day for the family. her vehicle plunged into this creek that is moving very swiftly. today one family member spotted a part of her vehicle. family members asked to keep private today and focus their energy on the search and recovery. but messages throughout the day on facebook talked about jayda jenkins about a faith minded 18- year-old who was starting college to become a social worker. >> there's a high probability that we found her. >> reporter: more than 30 family and friends joined in the search walking along a half mile long section of the closed niles county road. rescue crews say while it was heartbreaking the family was determined to find their loved one and her honda accord after it went off the roadway plunging into alameda creek. >> actually one of the family members picked up a rock and threw it at the object in the water and it sounded like it hit a tire. and as the water moved around, we got some images that showed what appeared to be tires. >> reporter: chopper 5 spotted what looked like an overturned car in the middle of the creek. later an alameda sheriff's drone went to check out the scene. because of the dangerous water conditions and swift currents, rescue team drivers did not go in the water today. emergency crews are working with the state water resource agency to reduce the amount of water being released into the creek. >> the water level coming down quite a bit may, may enable us to put more people in the water to get this done. the water is still moving pretty high and there's a lot of risk involved. it may entail like kelly talked about. >> we believe there's a high probability she's in the car and she's wearing a seat belt. >> reporter: so emergency crews will be out here tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. they'll assess the level of the speed of this creek. family members will also be alongside as the recovery begins again. juliette goodrich, kpix. a blizzard pounded the mountains dumping up to 6 feet of snow in some areas. some people were forced to dig out of their cars. a few drivers are lucky to be alive after an avalanche came crashing down on top of them. we have one survivor's chilling story. >> we heard a gushing noise then everything went white. >> reporter: david ortiz and his best friend were blind sided by the avalanche. >> i think we were a little freaked out. >> reporter: ortiz's car buried under several feet of snow. his friend turned his car off to keep carbon dioxide from building inside the car. >> so we just hung out in the back and tried to stay warm. >> reporter: the two men took selfies and even documented their experience on facebook live. the view from outside enough to make anyone else panic. it only took 45 minutes before first responders showed up. >> it actually happened pretty quickly. like i said we justifying youred out -- figured out what we were going to do and we just went in there and shoveled them out. the whole thing took about 20 minutes. >> reporter: dustin holings worth is a firefighter- paramedic that helped the young men. >> i think it was fortunate to be able to find them quickly. and that shortened the time and yeah i think it was fortunate for everyone. >> reporter: schutley and ortiz says it was the boy scout in them that helped them stay level headed. now a story that they can tell for years to come. >> i guess it's a nice lesson to not have to pay for in blood. >> reporter: reporting in west sacramento, i'm angela mussalam for kpix5. a break in the rain made for a beautiful view in mount we'll take it. literally put that in the bank. if it doesn't snow another flake for the rest of the year, our snow pack would be above average. >> wow. >> that's kind of crazy. we were begging a couple of years ago. we're there already. it's mid-january. and we don't need any snow between now and april but we will likely see more snow. the radar is pretty active. right over san jose for the weekend and staying dry from tomorrow morning with the exception of a couple of showers on thursday all the way through this time next week. we need a solid week to dry up. we're going to get it to the streets to march for a common cause. now that the dust has settled we're asking what's next for the movement? kpix5's jessica florez shows us. >> reporter: online women's march participants are tweeting pictures of postcards they're sending to senators why i marched. it's the first of what organizers are calling 10 actions in 100 days. this movement won't just go away, they say. like occupy wall street did. >> organizers did not start with the women's march. this is organized by a lot of organization that is have existed for decades. and so, we will continue to do this. we have had so much progress already and this is just one more step. >> she hopes the passion on the streets translates to more support for local groups like hers. >> find those organizations, join them and support them. >> reporter: today she's been seeing a lot more support for alliance for girls. but their biggest grant comes from the federal government. dollars she's not sure will continue to flow in under the new administration. >> i think the idea of the women's march was really to compel the new administration to continue to fund women's work. and continue to support progirl and prowomen policies. florez, kpix5. in the south bay, san jose city leaders say the women's march was the biggest turn out for a protest in city's history. city leaders estimate more than 25,000 people showed up. and to commercial growers. >> guard dogs, pit bulls running lose. we've had das dealing with nine homicides right now. we've had five wild land fires caused by pat grows. >> reporter: the group has gathered more than 5,000 signatures in what's believed to be the first voter initiated ordnance to ban all pot growing. it would kill the county's pot friendly regulations and even calls for shutting down the california's passage of prop 64 allows individuals to grow up to six plants for personal use. but pot proponents here say, that's not enough. and a complete ban would only deprive the taxpayers of the benefits of more than $300 million in taxable crop. in an already cash strapped county. >> but you don't think it's going to go away. >> no it won't. so they're going to keep growing and they're not going to get nothing out of it then the county is going to have to figure out how they're going to eradicate these people out of here and i don't think they're going to have the funding to do it. >> this could be some of the last legal marijuana grown in calaveras county. county board of supervisors will be meeting shortly they could decide at that meeting to ban cannabis cultivation all april 1st average snow pack. so if it didn't snow or the snow didn't melt we would still have above average for the year. we're looking at snow above 3,000 feet an additional four to 8-inches of
