Worked. Right, jackie . Reporter yeah, no kidding. So this is an interesting situation because usually when people or groups put up large objects or barriers, the city takes them down immediately but thats not the case here. Behind all this traffic as you can see its a busy intersection, there are barriers that a Bicycle Group put up and the city is keeping them up until they replace them but we dont know when that will happen. To get into the east side of golden gate park, bicyclists and cars branch off the street and veer on to jfk. We see cars come around this turn fast cutting into lanes. Reporter those speeding cars are what deters people from biking in this area according to a member of the sfmtra who wanted to remain anonymous. The truth is, we dont mostly need to do this. We dont want to do this work. We would like our city to do this work but they are not and not fast enough. Reporter a couple of weeks ago the sfmtra an organization not affiliated with the city installed these ten posts as a way to separate the cars from the bikes. It cost 300 and the money was donated by group supporters. Its hazardous because of the intersection. Reporter sfmta Spokesman Says this area is and has been on the citys radar. They were already planning on a barrier. This issue in the past has been that the posts would be crushed by the street sweepers so now that the street sweepers are smaller we are able to install the posts. Reporter according to the city there were zero miles of protected bike lanes in San Francisco. Since that time, 30 miles have been added but still the San Francisco mtra says that they want to double that number of miles within the next year. In San Francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. Mayor lee put out a plan a couple of months ago. They hope to work with the group moving forward. In san jose a cyclist was struck and killed in the hit andrun collision. Police say the driver Taylor Hildreth was arrested for drunk driving after the crash. It happened last night near drake street. Police say hildreth drifted into a marked bike lane, hit a parked van and struck the bicyclist. Its the fifth time this year that a bicyclist has been killed in the city. Thats the same number of fatal bike crashes during last year. Several cyclists we spoke to say they no longer feel safe. Bikes are small and not easily noticed and i mean, some of it can be on the bikers. Often times people arent following the laws of the road. The city is adding bike lanes to accommodate the increased cycle. A total of 26 new miles of bike lanes were added this year. San jose group is at the center of an international incident. They are being labeled as terrorists by the country of vietnam. Kpix 5s kiet do on how the group is fighting back. Reporter there it is on the website of vietnams ministry of public security. The headquarters of the terrorist organization known as Vietnam Reform Party is a 2350 berryessa road in san jose. It turns out the socalled terrorist headquarters is a ups store in this strip mall mailbox number 234. You dont look like a terrorist. [ laughter ] i hope not. Im not because im not. Reporter we caught one vietcongs chairman via facetime. Over the decades the group has become the largest most recognized organized and funded Group Fighting for democracy, social justice and the human rights in vietnam. They routinely partner with elected officials and ngos. After tens of thousands of people protested a toxic spill that killed millions of fish he said the government accused them of organizing the demonstration. Naturally they need to find a scapegoat, a way to put the blame on somebody and thats how they work. Reporter members have been routinely arrested and jailed for spreading antigovernment messages. Back in 2014, stanford law professor alan weiner convinced the United Nations the vietnamese government was violating International Law by doing so. Weiner thinks the government which controls the media is trying to cast them as a danger to public safety. My only supposition is that the vietnamese government is anxious about the growing appeal or popularity of the message that vietcong is delivering which is a call for reform. Reporter he says the government first called them a terrorist group 10 years ago and since then their numbers are grown a lot and they are putting that designation up front and center will only backfire. The fact that the vietnamese government become more concerned with the movement not just the vietnam but the entire movement is a clear indication that the tide is turning against them. Reporter kiet do, kpix 5. The group does raise money in the bay area as well as many other places around the world. The family of a homeless man killed by San Francisco police filed a federal civil rights lawsuit today. Kpix 5s lisa chan on the conflicting accounts of the shooting that happened less than 30 seconds after officers confronted the man. But reporter amy johnson says that theres a sharp disagreement about whether it would really work. Reporter the price of certain medications continues to skyrocket. The lifesaving allergy medication and epipens is up 500 since 2014 and an aids drug went up 5,000 . In my opinion, it is absolutely about putting profit before human lives. Reporter Rebecca Armstrong was diagnosed with hiv in 1989. She has nine medications. The 49yearold Fitness Instructor fears the price could one day get so high, she wouldnt be able to afford to stay alive. It could mean a matter of life and death. People are mad as hell and nobody appears to be willing or able to do anything about it. Reporter the senior director of communications for the aids Health Foundation sponsored prop 61, the california drug price relief act. This is a first step on the road to lowering drug prices not only here in california but across the nation. Reporter prop 61 would limit the prices paid by state agencies for prescription drugs impacting between 4 and 7 million californians. The measure would prohibit the state from paying more for a drug than the u. S. Department of Veterans Affairs which typically pays the lowest price for prescription drugs. Yes, the va gets discounts. They get super discounts. Right . But if this happens, they are not going to get those discounts. Its going to cost way more money. Reporter this army veteran served in vietnam and is a past state commander of the American Legion an strongly opposes prop 61. The front end it looks good. For the back end, its something i dont even want to touch. Reporter multiple veteran groups oppose it along with pharmaceutical industry. Kathy fairbanks is a spokesman for the no on 61 coalition. Its been evaluated by independent experts who cited concerns with the state actually paying higher drug costs, patients having decreased access to medicines, obviously theres a very negative potential impact on veterans. Reporter but proponents say the vets dont have to pay more. The only way the vets will pay more is from punitive greedy action by the drug industry and Drug Companies themselves. Reporter both sides are counting on voters to do their homework before going to the polls. Amy johnson kpix 5. And in one case, even went after some parents and students. And that prompted the district to step up security at all of the schools here. Clowns scaring a lot of the kids over at the Elementary School. We had a report of a car driving by the school doing that. We had another report of some people attempting to chase some kids and some adults in front of the one of the Elementary Schools. Reporter the School District police chief says the reports happened this morning at a half dozen Elementary Schools in oakland. They dont know if its the same clowns or copycats. Just scare tactics. They are dressing up acting like idiots. Trying to scare poor elementary kids. Reporter because of the number of reports, the district decided to lock out schools in the entire district, not lock down. A locksout only means we secure the outer perimeter. We monitor who comes and goes through the school. We have a heightened awareness of activity outside the fence line so to speak but the School Functions as normal. Reporter the creepy clowns hoax is on the minds of parents and students. I suppose we would also run and take cover. Our job is to prepare kids for the real world. You supposes we would also run and take cover. Obviously, they are doing it to get a rise out of people. Theres a lot going on, on campus, kids talking about it and stuff. Reporter what are they saying. Muni says it will monitor the olders buses to make sure the problem doesnt lead to any more collisions. Get ready for more implosions in the bay. Kpix 5s kiet do on how they are trying to put their own spin on the industry. Reporter the reality of solar panels is this. When theyre pointed this way and the sun is over that way, youre not making a whole lot of electricity. If only there is a way to rotate the panels somehow. Introducing the revolve house that, yes, spins on a circular track to keep solar panels pointed directly at the sun. We thought it was a little crazy initially. Reporter revolve is the brainchild of engineering students from Santa Clara University who have been working on the prototype for years to enter into the first tiny house contest this weekend in sacramento. Here we have sped up the footage but here it is rotating in real time. A full revolution takes half hour so theres getting dizzy. By tracking the sun, the students say you can live off the grid because you will make way more electricity than youll use. So it gives you a boost of around 30 . It mattered most on the days where you dont get as much sun because it might help when its cloudy. Reporter revolve packs a lot into 238 square feet including a kitchen, convertible sleep area with foldaway bed, bathroom big enough for wheelchair, heat and airconditioning and the rooftop deck. A large ground level deck combined with a wall garden thats always facing the sun means your tomatoes will never look better. I dont know how comfortable it would be. Its spacious once you get in there. Reporter there is no washer, dryer or dishwasher but before you scoff, consider this. Not including labor, the retail cost of materials was about 80,000.
