New at 6 00 a rash of mail thefts is causing headaches for hundreds of people in one part of the bay area. They are now forced to go to the post office and wait in long lines to pick up their mail. This is after a series of mailbox thefts in vallejo and American Canyon. Emily turner outside a post office in vallejo and you spoke with some of these frustrated folks. Reporter yeah. And there are several different ways that these crooks are getting into the mailboxes but the important thing that the post office wants you to know is that they are investigating it. They know whats going on. And they are trying to find the solution. They are lined up like black friday at the post office. But instead of mailing packages, they are here to pick them up. A recent rash of mailbox thefts has compromised more than 300 peoples deliveries. Until the burglaries can finally be solved. Its a shame that its come to this where we cant collect our important information. Reporter the the post office in there have been reported and unreported thefts. They are cracking open cluster boxes, using a key on others. Once inside they have your mail and all the information that comes with it. They get in my bank accounts, you know, and my visa accounts and everything. Steal my money. Reporter mail theft is a federal crime. And the post offices Law Enforcement arm has launched investigations. Until this case is solved these folks mail will be kept here and safe. Something needs to be done. I dont know, they have to do something. Reporter so this is a federal crime. It means its punishable by up to five years in federal prison and 250,000 fine. Its not some small minor issue. Not only is it a major crime, its a major inconvenience for people. So hopefully these investigative arms of the post office will be figure out whats going on. Emily, you mentioned breaking into the boxes. You mentioned a key. But a couple of postal workers had their master keys stolen so do they think that ties into it as well . Reporter that is a possibility. It makes it an even bigger deal. I was talking to the investigators just before we went on air. If those master keys are in possession of one of the crooks or they have made a copy thats illegal, thats an Additional Charge and years in prison. Theres a 10,000 reward that the post office is offering hoping that anyone will come forward with information for the arrest and conviction of the people behind it. So very clearly, a big deal. Absolutely. Emily turner, thanks. San mateo police need your help finding this suspected burglar caught on home surveillance last night. You see the man scoping out the house on eaton road before he tries to open the door. Police say he managed to get inside then steal jewelry before the homeowner was able to chase him away. Officers working to see if this burglary is related to a couple of breakins that happened nearby on hobart avenue. New at 6 00, bay area children lost to violence. Tonight families have a place to go to remember them. Kpix 5s jackie ward is in oakland where a memorial statue is unveiled. Reporter its a Memorial Service thats taken place every year for the last 22 years. On the statue behind me there are more than 400 names each one of them died as a victim of violence. [ bagpipes ] reporter a little while ago the people who knew these children came here and were led through a ceremony by mayor libby schaaf. When this annual Service First began one tree was planted for each child who had been killed that year. But the grove grew to more than 200 trees. So the childrens Memorial Committee decided to create a centralized fixture that people could find comfort in. Its going to raise the consciousness of our community that, you know, this violence has to cease. It has to stop. You know, this senselessness doesnt make any sense whatsoever. Reporter this statue is the same as one in hayward since 2014. A former Alameda County supervisor has been spearheading the efforts to put up a statue in oakland but had trouble getting leaders to accept plans for it until mayor libby schaaf took office. The children represent real victims of violence. There was a 14yearold girl from Castro Valley and two boys from oakland ages 3 and 17. In oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. Mayor libby schaaf chose Lakeside Park as the statues location because a lot of families are there every day. New video of a highflying coast guard rescue near the dumbarton bridge. Crews got the call around 7 p. M. Yesterday. The boater was injured. They tried to get him to crawl into the basket up to safety but he said he wanted to stay aboard until high tide. They lowered him food, blankets and a radio and monitored him until he was able to get back to shore this morning. Well, steady at times even intense rain in the bay area made for difficult driving conditions including highway 1 between pacifica and daly city. The road was wet and it was tough to see out the windshield there. To the south substantial rain fell in san jose. Some cyclists wore hoods and kept riding through the downpour but the rain caused complications for crews that needed to work outside. And streets were wet all around San Francisco, as well. Kentfield almost sixtenths. San jose. 42. San francisco about a half inch of rain, as well. Rain is turning to snow in the mountains. It should ease up after these lingering showers. But theres more rain on the way. Well cover the wheres, whens all that in a few minutes. It sounds a little funny to say in april but the sierra storm means you need chains required on the major highways. 50 between twin bridges and meyers, everybody has to have chains except fourwheel drive and snow tires. Travelers heading up the hill find that they come to a standstill. Seven accidents in just a matter of hours this afternoon. Motorists near eagle lake slowing down to near a stop. They thought i80 was closed due to heavy snow but it didnt shut down. It was a string of fender benders and a vehicle stuck in a creek that kept drivers waiting. Another slowdown for drivers being unprepared for chain controls. Now, Authorities Say it was those vehicles that and those people that were unprepared which led to the accident which led to the wait. Road crews say it will take another day to fix a massive sinkhole in San Franciscos Pacific Heights neighborhood. It opened up yesterday on sacramento street between lion and baker. It appears the sinkhole may have been caused by a sewer main break. But it is still under investigation. And theres a familiar face at at t park right now. Reporter this is where its going to land tomorrow night but look at that solar panel behind me. Imagine 17,000 of those, thats what making the plane fly. You can actually track the status of this flight on radar flight 24. Com. You can see it is more than halfway through its journey but it traveled a lot slower, about 90 miles an hour at last check, flying at 27,000 feet. And thats why it is taking 2. 5 days to get to the bay area. The Solar Impulse 2 more than halfway into its historic journey over the pacific ocean. This is the future for the world. Lets do it. Reporter the pilots are attempting to fly the solar powered plane around the world. They started last year in abu dhabi and on thursday they took off from hawaii to Mountain View on their ninth leg of the world tour. If it flies around the world thats good but imagine much more than that. Reporter their goal to fly a plane using clean technology. The Solar Impulse 2 is equipped with 17,000 solar cells that powers its propellers and charges its batteries. It basically can run forever. Would you ever trust a plane thats powered by the sun . Well, i assume that youre much closer to the sun in an airplane than you are below cloud cover. Reporter the pilot seems to be relaxed smiling talking. [ inaudible ] reporter even sleeping while on autopilot. Really . Oh, wow. Thats cool. So it drives itself. Reporter do you think this is the future of flying . I believe so honestly the way things progress nowadays. Reporter the flight over the pacific is being called the riskiest part of the journey because theres really nowhere to make an Emergency Landing. But if Solar Impulse 2 can do it its a mission that will land in history books. He wants to go down in the record books, thats for sure. Reporter all right. It was a flight of four hours 24 minutes so the fact that its taking 2. 5 days you can tell just how slow this plane is going. It is set to arrive here tomorrow night at 9 a. M. For now live at Moffett Field maria medina, kpix 5. Last summers deadly balcony collapse in berkeley is the focus of an upcoming hearing at the state capital. A Senate Committee will meet monday to discuss what has been done to tighten oversight of contractors with a history of construction defects settlements. In the berkeley case investigators determined water got trapped inside the wood during construction of the balcony leading to dry rot. The collapse killed six people and injured serve others. Cell phone video captures another fire in San Franciscos Mission district. The second in two days. Two firefighters were injured and about a dozen tenants were displaced from this fourstory building on san jose avenue. Todays fire was less than a mile from this one, which happened yesterday at 17th street near guerrero. Investigators believe it started in between two buildings. No one was hurt. Other bay area headlines. Alameda police now say that the man originally arrested in a gas station shooting isnt their guy. They arrested him based on witness accounts but they later ruled him out. Two employees were wounded saturday night at the arco on park street. A different man suspected in a road rage incident is now under arrest for the gas station shooting. Convicted felon don perdue is being held on bail in santa clara on suspicion of having a pipe bomb. He was arrested after being pulled over for driving with an expired plate and littering. Police called in the bomb squad when they found a pipe with wires sticking out of it in his backpack. Purdue is also suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance and carrying a stun gun. The woman suspected of fleeing police and crashing her car into an embankment in Mountain View has been arrested. 5yearold Tiffany Smith was stopped early yesterday morning for reckless driving. She sped away drove into a fence and flipped the car. She is in the hospital with moderate injuries. Once the 25yearold is released she will go to jail. Santa cruz mountains actually a little southeast of southwest of san jose but theres some thunderstorms out in the sierra and foothills and you see all that white out there that indicates where the snow is. There are Winter Weather advisories in the sierra until 11 00 tonight. Snow level down to 6500 feet. We could get 18 inches of snow in the latter half of april above 7,000 feet, lake level 2 t 6. Wind will be breezy this weekend. You can see that by the camera overlooking the san jose airport and levis stadium. Shaking around a little bit out there. As we look ahead we see our next chance of rain at least a possibility of it come in on wednesday and thursday. A few showers around the bay area doesnt look like a big rainmaker on the other hand the models arent really agreeing on what is going to happen on wednesday and thursday. We shall see.
